PHILIP NELSON, OF EAST LAS VEGAS, NEW MEXICO.
INVAIiID-LIFTING APPLIANCE FOR BEDSTEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1a, 1919.
Application filed August 17, 1918. Serial No. 250,339.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP NnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Las Vegas, in the county of San Miguel and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid Lifting Appliances for Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the. accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved invalid lifting appliance for bed-steads, and has for its primary object to provide a simple, lightly constructed, and substantial bedstead attachment whereby invalids may be easily and quickly lifted from or lowered upon the bed mattress and also moved to a desired position for the purpose of obtaining greater ease and comfort.
It is another and more particular object of my invention to provide an appliance for the above purpose including a metallic cot frame constructed of jointed relatively movable sections and detachable flexible sheet sections upon which the patient is immediately supported.
It is also an important object of the invention to provide a frame for the lifting mechanism shiftable upon the side rails of the bedstead, means for clam-ping said frame in a desired position against shifting movement, and flexible means for connecting the parts of the cot frame to the lifting mechanism.
It is also a further general object of my invention to provide an invalid lifting appliance for beds which may be readily applied to the ordinary bed without necessitating any material changes therein, can be manufactured at relatively small cost, and which will also be highly convenient and serviceable in practical use.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved combination, construction and relative arrangement of the various parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, subsequently claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1. is a side elevation, certain. of
line jecting inwardly. flanges at the pivotally connected ends of the parts being broken awayand illustrating one embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. .3 is a top plan view;
Fig. f is a section taken on the line H of Fig. 3';
Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3 the gearing being shown in elevation; i
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the supporting cot; Fi 7 is a detail section taken on the 7- 1 of Fig. 6 showing the locking means for the cot frame sections; and
Fig. 8 is a section taken on the line 88 of Fig. 7
Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 and 6 respectively designate the head and foot sections of a bedstead and? the side rails thereof, which as seen in Fig. 2, are of the usual cross sectional forin. Slats 8 are connected at their ends upon the horizontal flanges of the rails 7 to support a suitable mattress, indicated at 9. It will be understood that this bedstead constitutes no part of my present invention and that the lift- 'ing apparatus and improved cot construction, which I shall presently describe in detail, may be used in connection with bed steads of various constructions now commonly employed in private homes, hospitals and similar institutions.
As herein illustrated, the cot frame consists of side bars, each comprising two sections 10 which are pivotally connected together at one of their ends, as shown at 11. To the other end of each section 10 of the side bars, one section 12 of the end bars of the cot frame is connected. These frame sections 12 at each end of the cot frame are pivotally connected, as at 14, by means of the interposed frame section 13. Each section of the cot frame is of angular form in cross section, the horizontal flanges thereof pro- Upon said horizontal the frame sections, the sleeves or knuckles 15 are riveted or otherwise securely fixed. When the frame sections are disposed in longitudinal alinement, suitable locking pins 16 are inserted. into the opposed sleeves 1.5.
Thus, the several sections of the frame are securely locked together against relative movement.
Metal loops 17 are attached to the inner edges of the horizontal flanges of the longitudinal sections 10 of said frame and with said loops, suitable snap hooks or other detachable fasteningel'ements on the ends of the flexible supporting members 18 are adapted to be engaged. These supporting members may be ofcanvas or other suitable material, one of said: members being of considerably greater length than the others and provided with an opening 19 therein adapted! to receive abed. pain; To the under sides of the horizontal flanges of the frame sections, felt or other suitable material, shown at 20, is secured for contact with the covering of the mattressso that said covering will not betorn orotherwise. injured by the metal frame. i
The hoisting; mechanism for the cot above described, is mounted upon-.an adjustable frame structure. This structure includes a pluralityof side uprights 21, the uprights in each series being connected at their lower ends;' a longitudinal bar 22 which is adapted to restupon the ends of the mattress supporting: slats 8' inwardly of the vertical anges of the rails 7. These uprights are preferably formed by suitably bending metal bars, the intermediate portions 23 of which connect the corresponding uprights at opposite-sides of the frame to. each other. Longitudinally extending, angular plates 24 are secured to the series-of bars and rigidly conneet the sameeat thejuncture of the uprights with the-transverse intermediate portions 23. Upon the central upright 21in each series adjacent the lower end thereof, a rod 25 is pivotally mounted at one of its ends, as shownat 26. clamping screw 27 is threadedintheot-her, orfree end of. this red. This screw is adapted for binding engagement -with; ;a metal bar 28 fixed to. the under side of the bedstead rails 7 and inwardly of a downwardlyprojecting flange or rod 29 on the outeredge: ofcsaid bar. By means of these; clamping'devices, the frame structure may be rigidly secured and held in its adjusted position relative to the bedstead. Suitableclips 30 are secured to the uprights 21 in which the-rods 25 may be engaged when; the clamps are released and swung upwardlysoas to support said rods during the shifting. movement of the frame.
A longitudinally extending shaft 31 is mounted insuitable bearings upon the transverse portions23-of the frame bars and to saidshaft. at oneof'its ends a beveled gear 32 is fixed. Thisgear meshes with a similar gear 33 secured upon the transversely extending shaft 34 which is journaled in suitable bearings secured upon a bar 35 connecting the longitudinally extending plates 24 at one of their ends. Peripherally grooved wheels 36 are also fixed upon said shaft at each end thereof. In suitable bearing plates 37, centrally secured upon the end bars 23, the spaced shafts 38 are journaled, and on each of said shafts a grooved wheel 39 is likewise fixed. A gear 40 is also secured upon each shaft 38, said gears having meshing engagement with each other. One of these gears 40 also meshes with a gear 41 fixed upon the shaft 31.
Upon the intermediate frame bar 23, the gear wheel 42 is rotatably mounted and has meshing engagement with a gear wheel 43 fixed on the shaft 31, the latter gear wheel operating through an opening in the bar 23. Upon the axis of the gear 42 at one side of said gear, a ratchet 44 is fixed with which a gravity locking dog 45 mounted upon the bar 23 is normally engaged. 46 designates an operating crank connected to the axis of the gear 42.
To each of the side bar sections 10 of the cot frame, chains or other flexible elements 47 are connected at one of their ends. Similar chains 48 are also connected to the sections 12 of the cot frame at oneend thereof. The grooved wheels 39 are provided with suitable means to which the other ends of the chains 47 are adapted to be connected,
'36 are equipped with suitable means for the connection of the free ends of the chains 48 thereto.
In the use of the apparatus, when it is desired to lift or elevate the patient, the side chains 47 are connected to the corresponding wheels or drums 39. The crank 46 is then turned to rotate the shaft 31 and impart rotation through the gearing to the wheels 39, whereby the chains will be wound thereon and the cot frame with the patient supported upon the flexible sheet sections 18 lifted or elevated to the desired position. If it be desired to turn the patient over on his side, the chains 47 on only one side of the cot are connected to the wheels 39. The locking pins 16 at the ends of the cot frame and at this side thereof, are then removed so that upon the rotation of the wheels 39 and the winding of the chains thereon, this one side of the cot frame will be moved, the side sections 10 thereof remaining rigidly connected together and the sections 12 swinging upon the ends of the sections 13. If it is desired to dispose the patient in a reclining'position, all of the chains 47 are disconnected from the rollers 39 and the chains 48 are connected to the rollers 36. The locking pins 16 connecting the side bar sections 10 of the cot frame at each side thereof are now removed so that upon operating the lifting gearing and winding the chains upon the rollers 36, the head end of the cot frame will be lifted to an inclined position, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. l of the drawings. In the latter operation, the supporting structure for the lifting mechanism is shifted to the foot end of the bedstead, as also shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and securely clamped in such position in the manner above explained. i
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of my invention .will be clearly and fully understood. The various parts of the apparatus are of simple and durable construction, as well as I light in weight, and can be readily applied to the ordinary bedstead. The flexible body supporting sections 18 may be detached from the cot frame when they become soiled and replaced by clean sections. I have herein shown and described what I have-found to be a very practical and serviceable embodiment of the invention, but it will be, of course, understood that the several structural features herein referred to are susceptible of many minor modifications and I, accordingly, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
In combination, a cot having relatively movable pivotally connected frame sections, means for locking the frame sections against relative movement, a relatively stationary frame structure extending over the cot, lifting mechanism mounted upon the frame structure and including spaced pairs of drums having their axes disposed in parallel relation, chains connected to each side of the cot frame, the chains at one side being adapted for connection to one drum in each pair, additional drums having their axes of rotation disposed at right angles to the first named drums, chains connected to one end of the cot frame and adapted for connection to the latter drums, and a common manually operable gearing for said drums.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP NELSON.
