Be it known that I, EMERSON P. `JEN- NINGs, Jr., a citizen of the United States,`re siding at Lehighton, in the county ofCarbon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Delivery Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to sheet delivery devices for printing presses and` is designed more particularly for use in connection with the sheet feeding mechanism ofthe ap lication filed by me March 30th, 1916, erial No. 87725-, of which application theV present application is a division. The object of the invention is to provide sheet delivering device which will operate in a highly efficient manner to take the sheet from the press and deliver the same upon a suitablereceiving table, or support; further it is an object of the invention to provide such a device which will be very simple in its construction and operation, `and will be positively operated in timed relation to other parts of the press tocause it to perform its functions. f
It is also an object of the invention to provide such a device which will cooperate with the other parts of a sheet feeding mechanism to automatically feed sheets of paper through the press.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the mechanism is described in detail.

In these drawings I have illustrated the invention as applied to a bed and platen press in which the form-bed moves in a horizontal line toward and from the platen, and
which is equipped with the sheet feeding devices of the above mentioned application, but it will be understood that this particular type of press and sheet feeding mechanism is chosen for the purpose of illustration only and that the present invention may be applied to presses of different kinds, either with or without automatic devices for feeding sheets to printing position.
As shown in the drawings the press as a whole comprises a main frame 1, consisting of side members spaced apart and tied together` by tie rods and connecting devices and serving to support the various parts of the printing and feeding mechanisms. A normally stationary platen' 2 is mounted near one end of the press and a form-bed?) is mounted for movement toward and from 'the platen. In the particular type of press here shown the `form-bed has combined therewith an inking drum 4. The combined form-bed and inking drum is provided at its ends with trunnions mounted in guide Vblocks which` are slidably mounted in the guideways 6 formed in the side walls ofthe main frame 1. These trunnions are connected by pitmen 7 with crank wheels 8 which are here shown as gears meshing with pinions 9 on the shaft 10, to which power may be applied in any suitable manner.
Thelsheet feeding mechanism with which the press is equipped comprises a sheet separating device 11 having a separating member 12 which is suction operated and is actuated by suitable operating devices to turn the edge of the lowermost sheet of a pile of sheets away from the pile and into a position approximately parallel with the face of the 'platen 2. Cooperating with the sheet separating device is a set of conveying grippers 13 which are mounted on a shaft 14; carried by brackets 15, which in turn are mounted `upon vertically reciprocatory rack bars 16. These rack bars also carry camplates 17 which impart turning movement to the sheet separating member Y The rack bars 16 mesh with gears 18 mounted on a transverse shaft 19 and provided with a pinion 2O which meshes with a horizontal rack bar 21 connected at one end to the form-bed 3, preferably by connecting it with one of the slide blocks 5. The conveying grippers 13 engage the down-A Y turned edge of the sheet and move the same into printing position ontlie face ofthe platen, where they release the same andcontinue their movement toa point below the platen and out of the patli-oftlie yform-bed.

The grippers are carried by the lower ends of the arms 8G. In the present construction a bai' 91 is rigidly secured to the arms near their ends and is provided with a series of 'forwardly extending lingers 92 which con- @to cooperate with each finger or fixed jaw 92.
Each movable jaw 94 has a rearwardly extending portion, such as a finger 95, which is rigidly secured to the jaw. The rearwardly extending portions, or lingers, 95, of the jaws are tied together by a bar 9G and each linger extends a short distance beyond this bar. Mounted in the arms 8G, in the rear of the tie bar 96, is a shaft 97 having rigidly secured thereto a series of lingers 98 corresponding in number and arrangement to the rearwardly extending lingers 95 of the movable gripper jaws. The correspondingingers 95 and 98 are so karranged with relation to each other that they will be in aliiienient one with the other when the movable gripper jaws are in a position between their open and closed positions. Consequently, when the jaws are closed, or
vare fully opened, the fingers 95 and1 98 will be out ofalinement. A spring 99 is coiled about each pair of fingers, 95 and 98, and is soarranged that itstension will be greatest when the fingers are in alinement, hence the springwill tend to hold the lingers out of alinement on whichever side of the center they may have been moved, thereby holding the jaws either in their open or closed positions, as the case may be. Movement may be imparted to the movable jaws in any suitable inanner. As here shown an arm 100 is connected with the movable jaws, preferably by mounting it on the rod or shaft 93 and connecting it with the tie bar 96. By rocking the arm 100 about its axis the movable jaws are moved across their intermediate positions, and their movement is then completed by the springs 99. Any suitable ineaiissu'ch as fixed stops, may he ciuployed, to impart rocking movement to the armA 100, and in the present instance an intermediate device is interposed between the armand its actuating stops. This device comprises a curved aiin 120 mounted on the shaft 97 and having one end pivotally connected with the arm 100 in the rear ofthe tie bar 96. This curved arm extends rearwardly and upwardly and is connected at its upper end, preferably by a pin and slot connection, with an arm 121, which is pivotally mounted and which coperates with the arm 12() to form a toggle.` Preferably, the upper arm 121 of the toggleis mounted on a shaft 122 jonrnaled in bearings carried by the arms` 86, Means are provided 'for imparting rocking movement to the shaft 122, thereby actuating the toggle-to open or close l,the jaws. This rockingmovement is controlled` by the position `of the jaws, and to` this end I have, in the present construction, provided the shaft 122 with a 'trip iinger 123 `which is arranged between two stops, 124: and 125, carried by one of the bearing' brackets 126 for the shaft 87. These stops are so arranged that as the jaws approach the limit of their movement toward `the platen, the trip arm 123 will engage the stop 124 and cause the toggleto be operated to close the jaws, and as the jaws approach the limit of their movement away from the platen, thel linger 123 will engage the :stop 125 to operate the toggle toopen `the jaws, thus releasing thejsheet and allowing'it todrop upon a suitable receivingplatform or table. opening movement of the jaws is limited by aV suitable controlling device, and in the present instance I have provided the arms 86 with guide pins 127 on which the tie bar 96 is guided and which are provided with nuts 128 arranged to :limit the outward movement of the tie -bar and hence the opening movement of the jaws.` i
j The operation of the delivery grippers will be` readily understood from the foregoing descriptionthereof, and it will beapparent that as the form moves away from the platen the -delivery grippers will be moved into a position to receive the sheet and the jaws will be caused to grip the same. As the form-bed completes its outward movement the plate 27 will actuate thesupportingl'devices to release the sheet and as the form again approaches the `platen the grippers will swing downward and withdraw the sheet from the platen in advance of the conveying grippers which are moving a new sheet into printing position.` Asthe delivery grippers approach their rearward position, as shown in Fig. 4, trip armf123 will engage the stop 125 causing the jaws to open and a slight further movement of the grippers moves them out of engagement with the sheet, allowing the same to rest upon the supporting `platforintyI have" `shown and dcscribedia mechanismin which the jaws are opened and closed as they approachthe respective limits of their movement, but it will be understood that the-exact time at which these, operations take place is unimportant so long as the grippers are in proper positionto grip or deliver the sheet. y

In a sheet delivery device, a supporting shaft, means for imparting rocking movement thereto, a supporting frame rigidly secured to said shaft, a transverse bar mounted on that end of said frame remote from said shaft and having forwardly extending parts constituting aws, a shaft mounted on said frame in the rear of said bar, a plurality of jaws mounted on said shaft for pivotal movement toward and away from the first mentioned jaws, each of said pivotal jaws having a part extending rearwardly from its axis, a bar rigidly connected with each of said rearwardly extending parts, a lever mounted on said frame and connected with the pivotal jaws, a trip arm connected with said lever, stops to actuate said trip arm as the said frame approaches the limit of its movement in either direction, and a resilient device to hold said pivotal jaws in either their open positions or their closed positions.

tie bar rigidly secured to the rearwardlyex-w tending parts of the several jaws `between `their rear ends andtheir axes, a second shaft mounted onsaid frame in the rear of said tie bar,1lingers rigidly secured to said lastmentioned shaftand arranged normally out of alinement with the rearwardly extending parts of the corresponding pivotal jaws and adapted to be moved from one side of their alined position to the other side thereof by the movement of said pivotal jaws, springs coiled about the corresponding fingers and rearwardly extending parts of said pivotal jaws, a lever mounted on said frame and connected with said pivotal jaws, a trip arm connected with said lever, and stops arranged to engage said trip arm and actuate said lever as said frame approaches the limit of its movement in either direction.

In a sheet delivery device, a shaft, a frame rigidly secured to said shaft, jaws carried by said frame at a point remote from said shaft, a shaft journaled in said frame, jaws carried by said last-mentioned shaft and arranged to coperate with the rstmentioned jaws, an actuating device coinprising two levers pivotally mounted on said frame and having their adjacent ends connected, one of said levers being connected with the last-mentioned shaft, a trip nger connected with the other of said levers, and stops to engage said trip nger to cause the device to be actuated as said frame approaches the limit of its movement in either direction about the axis of said shaft.
