WILLIAM R. THOMAS, 0F GREAT FALLS, MONTANA.
PLOWSI-IARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1919.
Application filed February 16, 1918. Serial No. 217,611.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, VILLIAM R. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the county of Cascade and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plowshares; and I vdo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to plows and more particularly to improvements inl detachable and sectional shares.
It is one of the obj ects/of the present invention to provide a plow share consisting of a body member adapted to be connected by suitable means' to a part of the plow structure or frame and which plow share is provided with a removable 'plow point or edge and plate. Another object of the invention is to provide for the secure adjustment and proper alinement of the sections of the plow share in such manner as to obtain a parallel substantial and very rigid joint between the two members, and it is a further object to provide for the ready attachment and detachment of the plow point to the rear member of the share without requiring the application 0f machine tools to the elements other than the use of an ordi nary wrench to remove a single fastening nut. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a novel means for the ready attachment of the point to the rear section of the share in a facile and e'lficient manner and which consists of a spring element whereby thev parts are resiliently connected together so thatxa tension is constantly maintained to hold the parts in interlocked position. It is one of the important objects of the present invention to provide for the reduction of expense in the replacement of plow shares or removable plow points from the share bodies and to provide elements of plow shares which may be either cast or forged in quantities at comparatively low expense owing to the simplicity of the design of the elements and to further secure economy to the user of the plows by elimination of the requirement of removing the entire plow share as is now commonly the practice to permit sharpening of the edge of the share and it is an object to save in the loss of the worn down bodies of the shares by providing detachable plow points which may be substituted one for another as wear occurs and also readily and easily sharpened when removed from the plow.
Vith these and other objects in view as will be understood by those skilled in the.
art, the invention consists of the construction, the combination, and in details and arrangements of the parts as will be more fully described hereinafter with relation to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view looking up underneath the sectional plow share. v
Fig.,2 is a perspective view of the separated parts of the plow share looking toward the top face thereof.
Fig. ,3 is a perspective view looking down toward the rear of the slightly separated plow members.
Fig. etis a detail sectional view of the meeting edges of the sections.
My invention comprises a plow share 2, which is provided at its rear edge with a. series of perforations 3 to receive means for securing it to the adjacent part of the plow frame or structure. Substantially parallel to the rear edge of the plow share 2 is formed a straight front edge Ll, which is shown as beveled downwardly and rearwardly as at 5 in Fig. 2 to receive and abut against the complementary rear edge 6 of the detachable front plow point or section 7 which is of tapering or wedge-shaped crosssectional form having a curvilinear or cutting edge 8, which terminates in a point 9 having a land side 10 adapted, when the parts are assembled to be flush with the complementary landside 11 of the rear section and preferably this latter is provided with a forwardly inclined and tapered nose 12, which is rabbeted at 13 on its face 11 to receive the rear end or shoulder 14 at the rear of the point 9. When the front section or point 7 is applied to the share section 2, the nose 12 projects forwardly to bear upon an intermediate shoulder 15, Fig. 1, and the angle of the nose 12 as shown in Fig. 3 enters a complementary angular seat 12 formed therefor at the rear side of the point section 9, so that this angularly disposed board in combination with the beveled edges 5 and 6 of the plow body and point automatically serve to interlock the sections against relative longitudinal movement and against relative upward movement from each other and permitting only` separation of the parts in a plane parallel to the planes of the top and bottom of these members.
To further secure a rigid position of the parts 2 and 7, when they are assembled7 the rear faces of each are provided with respective lugs 17 on part 2 and 18 on part 7. The lugs 17 are alternated with the elongated lugs 18, and either may be formed integrally with the point or riveted thereon as shown in Fig. 2, the upper faces 19 of these points being adapted to overlap the adjacent lower face of the edge 4 of the plow rear section 2, and thereby operating with the elongated lugs or shoulders 17 to form interlocking bearings or rests for the assembled members.
Another feature of the present invention resides in the employmentof a substantial, simple, practicable and preferably resilient means for securely connecting the plow point in assembled position against the edge of the section 2 and the connecting device is shown Clearly in Fig. 1 as comprising a spring link or bow 20 of approximately U-shaped form having eyes 21 at its end adapted to embrace the lugs 18 which are shown as provided with concaved or undercut forward edges designed to form seats for the eyes 21. The central portion of the bow or link 20 which preferably is made of substantial material such as spring steel is slightly deflected as at 22 to form a seat for the end of a hook screw 23, the threaded end of which may be passed through a lug 24 adjacent the rear edge of the plow body, the screw carrying a locking nut 25, which after the link 2O has been adjusted upon the lugs 1S and the screw 23 pass through the lug 24C may be threaded up on the screw to draw the link 20 taut and thus firmly and with great tension pull the plow point 7 back against the seating edge 4 and upon the seats of the shoulders 17. These shoulders in combination with the lugs 18 and the angular bevel of the edge A5 serve to interlock the parts in assembled position to prevent any oscillating or lost motion.
What I claim is:
1. A sectional plow share comprising a front section and a rear section, the latter having elongated lugs at its front edge upon which the rear edge 'of the front section seats when the parts are abutted, a series of lugs on the front section disposed adjacent to the ends of one of the elongated lugs of the rear section, a projection on the rear section, and a spring-bow straddling the lastmentioned lug and having eyes to engage the lugs of the front section and which is connected to the said projection to secure the sections n situ.
2. A sectional plow share comprising a front section and a rear section the latter having elongated lugs at its front edge upon which the rear edge of the front section seats when the parts are abutted, a series of lugs on the `front section and elongated at the ends of one of said lugs on the rear section, a projection on the rear section disposed centrally to the rear of the last named lug, and a spring-bow having eyes at its ends to engage the lugs of the front section and which is connected to the said projection to secure the sections n situ, the ow lying around the rear and end lug of the rear section. A
3. A sectional plow share comprising a front section and a rear section the latter` having .elongated lugs at its front edges upon which the rear edge of the front section seats when the parts are abutted, a series of lugson the front section, an apertured projectiony on the rear section and a U-shaped spring-bow having at its ends eyes to engage the lugs of the front section and lying close to the back of the sections at the ends of the adjacent lug of the rear section and which is connected to the said projection to secure the sections z'fn, situ by an adjustable tensioning device insertible in the aperture of said projection.
l. A sectional plow share comprising a front section and a rear section the latter having elongated lugs at its front edge upon which the rear edge of the front section seats when the parts are abutted, a series of peripherally grooved lugs on the front section and alternated with the lugs on the rear section, a projection on the rear section, and a U-shaped springbow having eyes at its ends to engage the lugs on the front vsection and which is connected to the said projection to secure the sections n situ, the bow passing around the ends or behind the adjacent lug of the rear section.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature.
