Description

P. F. FLAGGE.
METAL ROOFING CAP.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 12, 1919.

i R I k l WITNESSES: INVENTOR VATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
METAL ROOFING-GAP.
Application filed February 12, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILLIP]? F. FLAGGE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Heretofore, such caps have been made by forming a spherical head section and securing it to the ridge roll by the aid of solder, with the consequent disadvantage that upon rough handling of the structure, and upon spreading of the ridge roll incidental to its application to the roofing, the solder would become loosened permitting leakage and permitting detachment of the spherical head.
It is the object of my invention to eliminate the use of solder in a structure of this character and to provide in a most economical manner for the connection of the head to the ridge roll by interlocking engagement of bent seam portions of the ridge roll with the head, to efiect a permanent and strong connection with the spherical head.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more particularly described and defined by the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation View of the roofing cap structure in accordance with my invention, portions of the cap being broken away to more clearly show the seam structure.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the cap, looking at the end of the ridge roll section remote from the spherical head. Fig. 3 is a detail section view on the line 3 Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the means for forming the double seam connection of the spherical head with the ridge roll section.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is provided a usual ridge roll plate having its intermediate portion longitudinally curved in a major arc to form the Specification of Letters Patent.

roll 5 and having its sides divergently extended at 6 to seat on the ridge of the roof and preferably provided with the outer shoulder portions 7. The end of the roll 5 lies in the usual oblique plane for connection with the spherical head of the cap, which comprises the usual outer hemispherical section 8, and an inner truncated spherical section 9, said sections being connected by a conventional seam form by an inturned flange 10 on the section 9 around which is bent an inturned flange 11 on the section 8. The inner head section 9 is connected with the roll 5 by a double seam formed by a bead 12 bent from the roll adjacent its oblique end edge and by a flange 13 bent obliquely from said end, the annular edge of the truncated spherical section 9 being engaged and confined between the flange 13 and the shoulder formed by the outer side of the bead 12. The end. portions of the roll sides adjacent the head are bent inwardly at 14, and the upper ends of these bent portions carry tongues 15, which, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, are simply bent to overlie the lower edge portion of the section 9 between the sides of the roll 5.
An exceedingly simple and strong metal roofing cap is provided wherein the necessity of using solder as a connecting means is entirely avoided, thus enabling the cap to successfully withstand relatively greater stresses incidental to their manipulation than the common types of caps employing solder. In carrying out my novel method of forming the cap structure, the head section 9 is secured to the roll 5 prior to its connection with the section 8, in contra-distinction to the existing method of forming such caps wherein the inner head is first formed and then applied to the roll thus necessitating the use of solder by reason of the impossibility of effecting an adequate bent seam connection with the roll. Thus, in carrying out my method the bead at 12 is first formed on the oblique edge portion. of the roll 5, the inner edge of the head section 9 is then placed about said oblique edge portion of the roll and a male die member such as shown at a in Fig. 4 is inserted in the end of roll 5, said roll being held by a suitable female die member 7), the male die a being provided with a curved shoulder portion 0, which as it moves inwardly bonds the edge of the roll outwardly against the edge of the edge section 9 to form the flange 13 aforesaid and to properly clamp the edge of the head section 9 between said flange 18 and the shoulder of the previously formed bead 12. The outer head section 8 is then applied to the inner head section 9 and the inturned flange 11 thereof is bent about the flange 10 of the section 9, preferably by the insertion of a suitable expansible die in the head.
\Vhile I have shown and described my in vention as being associated with a roofing cap having a spherical head portion, it will be appreciated that my invention is equally applicable to roofing caps having hollow head portions of polygonal or other shape presenting substantially the same problem of assembly. Hence, the term spherical as I use it, may be taken to mean any hollow shape for association with the ridge roll.
What is claimed is: 1. A roofing cap comprising a roll portion having a shoulder adjacent one end, a truncated hollow head portion having its edge disposed about said end of the roll portion,
and a flange bent from said end of the roll portion and confining the edge of the head portion between said shoulder and flange.
2. A roofing cap comprising a plate bent to form a roll with its sides extending divergently therefrom, a shoulder on the roll adjacent one end thereof, a truncated hollow head portion having its edge disposed about said end of the roll, a flange bent from said end of the roll and confining the edge of the head portion between said shoulder and flange, 'inturned portions on the ends of the plate sides adjacent the head and tongues on said int-urned portions bent about the edge of the head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin.
