MARTIN H. J. RED'MER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NUT.
.Be it known that I, MARTIN H. J. REDMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Nuts, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an iniprovement in nuts, and has for an object to provide a nut of peculiar construction with seats in the peripheral surface of the nut adapted to receive the end of an impact receiving instrument for the purpose of turning the nut which is of such size or in such a location that a wrench can not be eflectively applied thereto.

the annular body are The invention further aims at the provision of a nut having the usual polygonal nut receiving body, and which is provided with notches at the adjacent or meeting ends of the sides oil .the body to form projecting lugs or portions at the meeting edges of the sides for the reception or the flattened end of a screw-driver, a chisel or the like thereagainst.
The above, and various other objects and advantages ofthis invention will be in part described, and in part understood, from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a nut as applied to a bolt, a flat-ended instrument being a plied to the nut for driving the same in t c direction indicated by the arrow;
Fig. 2, is a sideelevation of the nut constructed according to the resent invention.
Referring to this drawing, the nut com. prises an annular body part 10, having the usual internal screw-threads 11 for engagement with a bolt A or the like in the usual manner.
The annular body 10 is provided exteriorly with a plurality of flat sides '12 angular y disposed with respect to one another, and meeting in edges 13- or angular projecting portions extending transversely of the periphery or the nut. The sides 12 of rovided, mar the opposite ends of each si e 12, with trans- Speciflcation of Letters Patent.
versely extending substantially V-shaped notches 14; arranged at opposite sides of the angled portions 13 to form projecting lugs thereat.
As-shown in Fig. 2, these notches 14 extend transversely of the periphery of the body. 10, and form seats with relatively deep shoulder portions against which the fiat end of a tool B may engage. The tool B is adapted to receive impact from a hammer C or the like, for driving the nut in either direction, such as in the direction indicated by thearrow in Fig. 1.
By forming the notches i l at the opposite sides of the angled portions 13 of the nut, the latter occupies but the ordinary space, and requires no extra amount of material or the formation of projections or other additional parts. This recessing or notching of the sides 12 at the opposite sides of the projections or angled portions 13 merely segregates the angled portions, and the latter serve as relatively deep shoulders or projections at the meeting ends of the sides 12. These segregated or outstanding portions or lugs 13 aiford a firm purchase of the tool B against the exterior surface of the nut, and adapt the nut for the recep tion of a tool B with a relatively thick and strong flattened end. i
It is of course understood that various changes may be made in the details of the desi of the nut to increase or decrease the and for imparting various other configurations to the nut than as shown so long as such changes are comprehended by the scope of the appended claim.
I claim A. nut comprising an annular internally threaded body of polygonal exterior contour presenting flat wrench-receiving faces, each flat face of said body provided with a relatively narrow notch near each end thereof providing lugs at the projecting angled portions of the bod and flat uninterrupted surfaces between t e notches for the reception of a wrench, the outer faces of the lugs and the Wrench engaging surface between the notches lying in the same plane.
