Be it known t at I, JoHANN G. WALL- MANN, a citizen of the United States, 'residing at'the city of Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improve- 'ments inrakes, of which the following is a s ecication. The object of my invention is to provide avacuum brake for automobiles operated from the vacuum of the intake'manifold used in lconnection therewith which does not interfere with the service or emergency `brakes on the automobile and which has novel means for allowing a vacuum to be drawn in a chamber fof one of its cylinders,l
and which has other advantages which will are shown in side elevation.
In the drawing 1 shows a suitable intake manifold to a gas-motor. A pipe 2 connects said manifold to valve port 31 and a branch pipe 3 connects said pipe 2 with valve port 7. A cylinder 4 has a piston -or valve 5 therein and said valve has a transverse aperture 6 therethrough. The said Valve'or piston has a by-pass 7 extendin vertically in its upper portion as shown. cylinder cap 8 fits upon said cylinder, the said cap having an air vent therethrough. A piston rod 73 issecured in said piston and has a cap 16 wherein is a seat for spring 9, whichvv spring contacts at its lower end with said cap 8. A wire 17 is secured in said cap 16 and is partly inclosed by guide tubing 18. A steering lpost having tubing 19 on bent wire 17 therein, the said wire being secured wall in cylinder 4 has apertures or vents 14-l 'arrn 63 linked-to arm 65 by the brake cross in push-button r'od 21 by lconnection 20. A spring 82 on rod 8O` intervenes between stem 84 and ,the slide-bar of bracket 81. A piston 45 in the vlower part of said cylinder 52 has a dog 44 projecting downwardly and engagea'ble .with rthe teeth. of notched bar 43, which is connected by coupling 42 to rod 35 operable in stuiiing-box 41. 46 designates the lower cylleads downwardly from the cylinder 52 into.
A catch 873 secured to said ginder chamber of cylinder 52, a spring 47 the box v95. A rod 92 extends through a side opening in box 95 and connects notched bar 43 with a clevis 56 which is connected to threaded plug 57 screwed in cylinder 58 containing piston 61 and piston rod 59, which rod works in the slideway ohead 60 upon A clevis 62 connects piston rod V59 with shaft 64. A spring 90 is connectedA to arm .65 and extends to a suitable place where thel same is secured at its other end. A connecting rod 66' is pivoted to the outer end of l. arm 65, said connecting rod being pivoted to arm 67 connected to drum 68 and pivoted intervening spreader 70, which spreader is endwise engaged by the shoes of the expansible band 69 in said drum 68. The said band 69 is centrally pivoted to said drum 68.
My said brake is operated from the vacuum in the intake manifold. It does not interfere with the service or emergency brakes on the car. The brake drop arm 63 is attached to the cross-shaft of either the emergency or the service brake. Piston cylinder 32 and its parts is fixed in the frame of the car. The valve in cylinder 4 is set and the pipe connections are connected to said piston-cylinder and the intake manifold, and the manual push-button control on the steering post 25 1s connected to the valve for the operation when desired to be commenced.
By starting the gas-motor of the car and unlocking the push button at the thread 22 by giving it a couple of turns to the left spring 9 forces the button 23 upwardly by means of the steel wire 17, thus simultaneously raising piston 5 in the cylinder 4 and which closes the aperture 31 and opens the aperturel at 77. The valve4 in this position releases the brake in the following manner A vacuum is drawn in the cylinder space marked 46 by means of the pipe 2, pipe 3, passage 6, pipe 26, and passage 55, causing the piston 45 to be raised in the cylinder 52. The piston 45 raises the dog 44 out of the notched piece 43, simultaneously raising the piston valve partl, passage way 48 allowing a vacuum to be drawn in the chamber 36 of the cylinder 32. This partial vacuum in the chamber 36 causes the piston 34 and the connected parts 35, 43, 92, 56, 57, 5e, 59, 6o, 61, 62, 63, 65, 66 and 67 to be drawn backward, releasing the brake bands in the drum 68. In this position the brakes are free. to put on the brakes as the car is moving the operator causes the clutch to be thrown out and pushes down on the button 23this movement opening the port 31 and closing the port 77 a partial vacuum is drawn from the chamber 37 of cylinder 32 which causes the piston 34 andgthe connected parts 35, 42, 92, 4e, 56,57, e, 59, 60, 62, 66, 65, 66, and 67 to be drawn forwardly. This movement causes the bands 69 to be spread in the drum 68, breaking the momentum of the car. This downward` movement of the piston 5 of the piston vaflve mechanism simultaneously opens the passage way 7, which allows air to enter the cylinder chamber 46, spring 47 forcing piston 45 downwardly allowing the dog 44 to catch in a notch of bar 43.r This downward movement of the piston 45 carries the piston valve part 51 downwardly so that the passage 50 allows air to enter the cylinder chamber 36. The foot piece 84 is intended to be used to throw out the dog 44 when the motor of the car has stopped running or it may be used to keep the dog out of service. This When you wishI is done by pressing down on the foot piece 84 and at the same time pressing forwardly until the slot 86 catches on the catch 83, and such releasing mechanism is connected to the ioor'board of the car and consists of the following parts A slotted rod 78, a lever 79, rod 80, bracket 81, spring 82, catch 83, foot piece 84, and loor board 85. The slot 87 in the rod 78 is so shaped as to allow the lever 79 ample play. The foot valve 10 and the spring 12 rform an important part in the operation of my said brake. By pushing down slightly on the button 23 the port 31 is opened causing a .partial vacuum to be drawn in the passage 28, pipe 27 and chamber 37this partial vacuum being broken to a certaln extent by air being sucked in through the valve 10 and entering the passage way 28 by vents 14. The farther the operator pushes downwardly on the button 23 the farther down the piston 5 is carried-this causing spring 12 to give more tension to the valve 10 thereby allowing very little or no air to pass into the partial Vacuum. In this way you can cause the brake to be set hard or slightly. The rod 59 and its parts may be constructed so as to allow the free turning of the cross shaft 64 without carrying forwardly the piston 34 and its parts. The said cross-shaft may be either the service or emergency brake cross-shaft and by the play of rod 59 and piston 61 in cylinder 58 the free movement of the hand brake or foot brake is allowed should .it be desired to use them. The rod 59 is fitted with a clevis on one end and a head as shown on the other end. The cap and guide 60 is threaded to the tube 58. The rod 92 is square so as not to allow the part 43 to turn. The drop hanger 63 is split on the head so as to permit it to be attached to the cross rod without removing the same. The part 90 is a pull-back spring to be attached to the brakes on the car.
I claim 1. In a brake the combination with a manifold of a cylinder having side apertures and an ulpper and lower aperture; tubing connecting said manifold with said cylinder; a piston in said cylinder havin a transverse passage therethrough and a ypass and having a piston-rod projecting through the upper end of said cylinder provided with a head; a spring on said pistonrod between said cylinder and said head; a steering-post having .a longitudinal passage therethrough; a rod connected to said head and extending into said steering post; a joint connected to said rod in said steering post, and projecting through said steeringpost and provided with a push-button; a cylinder having end openings; a pipe connecting said first-mentioned cylinder with saidcylinder having end openings; a box Ia piston-,cy inder therefor,
projecting from saidcylinder having end Jecting from the same and through one of the end openings of said cylinder; a toothedrod connected to said piston-rod last-mentioned and having an extension slidably projecting through said box; a pistoncyl inder pivotally connected to said extension; a piston having a rod projectin through the pistoncylinder last-mentionedI; a pair of pivoted arms, one of said arms bein connected to the rod last-mentioned an the other of said arms havin a rod extending outwardly therefrom; a drum; a centrally pivoted nd in said drum endwise provided 4with shoes; an arm pivoted to the rod last-mentioned and provided with a movable spreader between said shoes and engageable therewith; a vertically acting dog engageable with said toothed-bar' and. means in connection with Said cylinder having saidapertures and `uplper and lower apertures .and said'cylinder having end openings, and
