To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LLoY'D B. SALT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dedham, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Signaling Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to improvements in signaling instruments and has for its object to provide a simple, compact and handy instrumentfor signaling with the international or Morse telegraph codes by means of light flashes or sound-waves, said instrument being particularly' adapted for use in instructing pupils in the art of sending and receivlng telegraph messages.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claim. 7

In the drawings, 1 indicates what is generally known as an electric pocket flashlight which embodies. in its construction a battery container 2, the present form being cylindrical. 3 are batteries arranged within said container, said batteries being of the usual well known type and having contact surfaces 4 and 5 at opposite endsthereof. At
one end of the container 2. an electro-receptive device is arranged in the form shown in Fig. 1. This device embodies an electric lamp 6 which has screw threaded engagement with a partitlon 7 inserted adjacent to one end of said-container and said lamp has electrical connection with the battery nearest thereto and also with said partition 7 said partition being, in turn, electrically connected, by'means of a conductor 8, with a metal ring 9 secured to the opposite end'of said container.
A metal closure or cap 10 has screw threaded engagement with the metal ring 9 and is readily removable therefrom to permit the insertion f batteries or the removal thereof from said container. Secured to the closure 10 is a bracket 11 provided with ears 12 and 13 which are tapped to receive screws '14,. said screws being arranged with their axes alining. I
The adjacent ends of said screws are preferably cupped, to :receive correspondingly shaped members-15'and16' upon a lever l and thereby pivotally support said lever upon said bracket. The lever 17 has an arm 18- which is bent to extend over the edge of j the closure l0.and carries an adjustable stop screw 19, the end of which is arranged to the cylindrical container2, said last named portion being disposed near the lower edge of the closure 10 in close proximity to the surface upon which the container 2 is placed.-
A foot piece24 is attached to the closure 10 adjacent to the last named extension of thearm 20, .for the purpose of preventing the container from rolling upon the surface wherein the same is resting. ,At the outer end of the arm 20 a finger piece 25 is attached. The lever 17, consisting of the arms 18 and 20 and the finger piece 25, constitutes at'elegraph key which, upon being rocked about its axis, consisting of the screwsll, moves the contact screw 22' into electrical connection with the batteries contained within said container, and the preferred medium whereby such a connection is produced is a contact member 26 secured to the closure 10 and insulated therefrom by an insulating bushing 27, said contact member being in alinement with the end of the screw 22' and adapted to be engaged thereby when the key is depressed.
When the key is rocked about its axis to i move said contact screw 22 in engagement with the contact member 26, a light spring 28, attached to the bracket 11 and engaging said lever 17, will be deflected and when the pressure is released fromsaid key said spring acts'to return the same to its normal position, that is, with the adjusting screw 19 in engagement with the closure 10.
In F ig. 4 I have shown, in the end of the. container 2 in place of the lamp 6, a buzzer which is of a well known construction and this buzzer is mounted upon a base 31 which thisdevice being old and well known to" those'skilled in the art, no further'description is thought necessary.
Thevend of the extension 32 has a contact member 36 mounted therein and insulated from the sleeve 3, said contact member 36 being adapted to engage the end of the battery 3 within the container "adjacent to said frame 7, and extending from the contact member 36 to a binding post 37 mounted "upon said base 31 is a conductor 38 which is also electrically connected with the electro-receptive deviceof the buzzer, thus it will be seen that when the telegraph key is operated by pressure upon the finger piece 25 to move the 'c0ntactscrew 22 into en nesses.

' Having thus specifically described my invention what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
An instrument of the class described having, in combination, a container, a battery arranged in said container, an electro-receptive device disposed at one end of said container, a detachable cap for the other end of said container, a U-shaped bracket secured'to said cap, a telegraph key pivotally mounted between the arms of said bracket and extending laterally from'saidcap, adapted to be operated to close the electric circuit containing said battery and said electro-receptive I device, and a spring adapted to return said key to its normal position to break said electric circuit.
