Be it known that I, AGHILLE JOSEPH OISHEI HOSCHEK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in trusses for inguinal hernia, while it is equally adapted for the treatment of any form or type of hernia or other defect of the abdomen which needs support. a

The invention has for its object, in common with my truss forming the subject matter of my co-pending application filed May 18, 1918, Serial Number 235,318, to provide for relieving the distress and pain which would otherwise result from the contact or pressure of the truss with the body of the wearer, as well as to overcome discomfort experienced in any other manner from the wearing of trusses.

A further object of the invention is to provide for carrying out the aforesaid ends in a satisfactory, simple, inexpensive and effective manner and with facility.

With these and other objects in view as will later appear the invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features of construction as hereinafter more fully disclosed v from the spirit or scope of the claim, and

In carrying out my invention, I suitably provide a belt 1 for encirclin the body as usual in the use of devices of ti is type, The

belt 1 is preferably composed of a plurality ofmembers, as for instance a body or belt member proper 1, and end-members 2, said body or belt member including what may be termed a front section 1 itself composed principally of belting material preferably of two or more ply, having applied to its inner surface about centrally thereof, heavy elastic material 1 also preferably of two or more ply and laterally of the latter are suitably secured pads 1 which are of some hard substance and are preferably oblong or rectangular, with their body-engaging or presentable surfaces rounded in general outline. Said bulbs or pads are disposed in vertically diagonal positions, with their upper ends inclined toward the center, es"- pecially as seen in Fig. 3, to provide for greater effectiveness in exerting or delivering pressure to the hernia as is believed will be appreciated by those versed in this art, and as will more fullyappear hereinafter. The bottom edge of the central portion of the front section 1 as at point opposite the elastic material, is upwardly curved to adapt the same to conform to the portion of the body or crotch engaged thereby in applying the device for use which curved bottom edge portion has suitably secured thereto a strengthening or reinforcing braid 1 Upon the outer front surface of the section 1 are suitably secured preferably two rows or philralitics of buckles 2 each row or plurality being preferably three in number, as seen in Fig. 1, said rows of buckles being also arranged in a similar manner as the pads or bulbs 1, upon the opposite or inner surface of said section, but relatively upon the bulbs or pads and accordingly force the latter into such relation or juxtaposition to the protruding hernia as to produce the proper and effective replacement and retention of the hernia, as is believed will be apparent.

The body or belt member proper It a so includes or comprises lateral sections 1 practically one and the same with the front section, but of belting or non-elastic material and suitably secured to the elastic front section 1 to provide against the undue or excessive stretching of the body-member or belt, as would be the case if of elastic material.

The end-members 2 comprise elastic webbing or piece 2 of preferably double ply, connected to the outer ends or terminals of the latter and adapted to provide for the employment of stub-straps 2 which cooperate with the buckles 2 of the frontmelnber 1 for fastening the belt or truss upon the wearer and whereby requisite pressure, as above ind icated,,is exerted through the bulbs or pads upon the hernia. It will be noted that one of the belt elastic-attaching end-members 2 has an endwise slidable hook-and-catch connection 2 with the body member 1, whereby the appliance may be readily removed from, and applied to the wearer without disturbing the relative positioning of the bulbs or pads to the hernia, thus providing for insuring the proper replacement or returning of the truss or appliance to the body. Other and numerous advantages and benefits are obtainable from the use of my truss which will be appreciated in the practical application of the same.

As means for aiding the retention of the appliance in effective position upon the body, I use suitable elastic hook-ended straps 3 for passing under the crotch and engaging loops or eyes 4, P suitably positioned upon, and secured to the front section 1, and at the back of the body member proper, respectively.

It is further observed that, in the use of my truss or appliance, the same is capable of adjustment whereby the pads or bulbs may be so positioned as to provide the wearer. being perfectly comfortable, and whereby the hernia may be pressed back in the abdomen and the two muscles be allowed to be brought together. This allows of the retention of the pads or bulbs in their original position and relation to the effected parts, whatever posture the body may be caused to assume, whether it may be prone in a rolling action or otherwise; or in event of the wearer slipping or falling the pads or bulbs will maintain their initial position. Also it is observed that the appliance or truss always maintains a continuous pressure upon the hernia and that the positioning of the truss strap attaching buckles, as above indicated, causes the straps as they are drawn upon to pull the bulbs or pads inwardly or toward the body, whereby the required amount of pressure is brought directly upon the pads or bulbs, causing the same to fill the hernia-space. Also it is observed that when the parts have been prop erly adjusted and the desired pressure obtained the same may not be, and are not to be interfered with; this is possible by reason of the provision of the subsidiary or additional strap and buckle connection at the side as at 2, 2*, as will be readily appreciated.

From the foregoing and the accompanying drawing disclosure it is thought that my invention and its benefits and advantages will be fully apparent.

What I claim is:

A truss of the type described including a belt comprising a plurality of members, among them a body-member proper and end-members, said body-member including a front-section composed principally of belting material having applied to its inner surface, about centrally thereof heavy elastic material and laterally of the latter material pressure-exerting pads of oblong outline with rounded body-engaging surfaces disposed in a generally vertical position, with their normally upper ends inclined toward each other, said front-section having secured upon its outer surface rows of knuckles positioned correspondingly with said pads and having applied to its inner surface non-elastic pieces, said end-members being elastic and one fixedly connected to one of said non-elastic pieces, the other endmember and non-elastic piece being provided with said front-section whereby'interengaging means with its pads and the pad adjusting means is adapted to be removed from said body-member proper without interfering'with the adjusted position of said pad-adjusting means and whereby the bodymember or belt is adapted, as an entire unit, to readily accommodate itself to the various positions which the body of the wearer may be required to assume.
