To all whom '5t may concern.' 'n
Be it known that I, O'i'ro VoGuTzEn a citizen of the United States, and resident' of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new amd useful Improvements in Punches for Perfo rating Films, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to a punching device for perforating motion picture' films and more particularly to the construction of the punch, which is adapted for use in any of the punching machines for eecting this operation upon films by which the series of holes are punched on each side of the film for advancing the same.
The object of the invention is to improve the construction of the punch by providing an arrangement in which the operating parts may be readily made and assembled andalso easily replaced if broken or removed for repairing, etc.
The construction also provides for an.
easy adjustment for each of the punch members, either separately or together, and the punch block or holding member may be used either for holding the punch members p or guide members, as will be apparent and set out more fully hereinafter in connection with the description in detail of the device embodying the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings like 'parts in the several views have been given the same reference numerals. i
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the punch and guide members, showing the same positioned together as actually used in operation.
Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig.v1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the punch or guide block for holding the punch v or guide members.
Fig. 4 is a side view of Fig. 43.V l Fig. 5 is a detail view of the punch mem ber, showing the same in both end and side elevation.
Fig. 6 is a detail view of the guidemem- .tioned side by side as t ber, showing the same in both end and side elevation.
rl`he assembled punch is indicated the assembled guide is indicated at l, these members bein 4is constructed of a series or plurality of steel plates 3 and 4 (3 and 4', etc.,) which are I held together by the screws 6 6 and accuof the dowels The plates 3 are wider than the adjacent plates 4, as shown, and when assembled provide spaces on either side of the block 'in which the punch members 5 are positioned and securely held between the plates. The elongated central opening 8 in the block provides for fastening the device in the machine.
The same or a similar block is also used for holding the guide members 9, the guide members being similar in construction to the punch members 5, except that the same are longer and are tapered at their lower end, as shown in Fig. 6. The purpose of these guide members is to accurately position and hold the film for the successive operations of' the punch, the guide members 9 enterin .the holes just punched, after the film is a vanced for the next operation, in lthe usual manner.
Heretofore devices of this nature for punching the film have been made in one piece but difliculty has been experienced in properly tempering or hardening the same without causing a distortion or warping of the ,small projecting punch or guide portions. Furthermore, if one of the punch or guide portions became broken the whole device was thereby rendered useless.
rlhe advantage of the construction here shown will be obvious, as it not only provides separate and independent pieces of uniform size, which facilitate the hardening and tempering, but also provides for replacement ofa broken or worn part and -l v u u4 n I A Lmso for .c simple adyusmont of may one or of uh@ punch or funde members 11u61@- v "penenty, which rosuts iu'an ocicn device andi in a saving off time ndil expenso both in construction andoperaton. L
What I claim iszy f ln u 'punch for punching lms, in combi'- nationg u punch block composed of u 1urality of plates' secured together, the a ju- 10- cent plates being of loss Width to 1eme spaces between the projecting portions of the ultmaytely positioned wior pictos, und a plurality of punch m'embors auch posi.- tioned in one of said spaces-alici hold between' the 'said projecting plates on either'side thereo 'Signed at Brooklyn, Kings county, New
York, the l() day of J anuary, 1919.
