SHIP-RASNG DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. lgttntgd App, 2Q?, lj'g),
Application filed March d, 1915. Serial No. 220,319.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, Nazznnnrio TocNAccr, a subject of' the King ofltaly, residing at Kincaid, in the county of Christian and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Ship-Raising Devices, of which the following is a specification. v
The primary obj ect of the invention is the provision of a devicefadapted for raising sunken vessels to the surface of the water easily and quickly, the device possessing great strength and being simple in constructionv A further object of the invention is to provide a pneumatic means for raising sunken vessels and providing an arrange ment for changing weighted members at tached to the vessel into elevating floats therefor, the device being readily operable from the surfaceof the water in the neighborhood of the vessel to be raised.
1With these general objects in 'iew and others that will appear as the nat-ure of the invention is better understood, the same consists ,in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
ln the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding' parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the device illustrated in its operative arrangement in raising a sunken vessel.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of one of the floats having an attaching chain with a vessel indicated by dotted lines supported by the chain.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of one of the floats during the inflation thereof.
Fig. 4; is transverse sectional view of a float taken upon line Tlf-1V of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a diagrammatical View of the operating pump and piping employed with the floats.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, a sunken vessel 10 is herein illustrated resting upon the bottom 11 of the ocean 12 while a ship 13 upon the surface of the water vis provided with my device by means of which the vessel 10 may be easily raised to a point alongside of the ship 13.
il. plurality of hollow glol dar preferably n :metal floats lare provided, substantially pearshape'd as herein shown having an inlet head 15 at one end and a .valve casing 16 at its opposite end for accommodating an outlet valve 1T. This falve is normally closed by means of the water pressure when the float '14 is submerged while a handle 1S is provided for the said valve 17 for opening the saine when desired.
ppositely arranged hooks 19 are provided upon the head 15 with the opposite ends of a chain 20 positioned upon said hooks, thereby forming a. chain loop adapted for positioning around the vessel 10 for raising the same. A weight 21 is preferably provided for each of the chains 2O and it will be understood that divers will be employed for positioning the chains 2O around the vessel 10 and then attaching the chains to the hooks 19 ofthe floats 14, the said floats being adapted to be filled with water for sinking the floats to'a point adjacent the deck of the submerged vessel.
lVith the water filled floats 14 connected to the vessel 10 in the manner described, a combined elevating water pump and air compressor 22 which is arranged at any convenient point upon the ship 13 is employed for pumping the water out of the floats llland forcing air into tlie floats foi-.taking the place of' such water.
The valve casings 16 are connected to the water pumping side 23 of the puni 22 by means of suitable pipes 24: while tie inlet heads of the floats ll are connected to the air compressing side 25 of the pump 22 by means of suitable hose 26.
With the device arranged as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be understood that by operating the pump 22, the water 2?' within the doa-ts 1d will be extracted 'therefrom through the pipes 2li while air will be pumped into the floats 121 through the bottom heads 15 by the use of the hose 26. El. funnel or injector tube 28 is carried bythe valve casing 16 of each float 1d and axially posi-y :les
iie
simultaneously with the How of air into the oats through the hose 26. A serviceable device for quickly raising Sunken vessels is provided which requires only a few workmen and divers and has but few parts and these are only slightly liable to injury.
What I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a hollow Vertical fioat, an inlet head at the lower end of the float, a vessel engaging chain suspended from said head, air supplyin hose attached to said head, and a s 'ater ex iausting pipe connected to the upper end of the float. l
2. A device of the class described comprising a hollow vertical float, an inlet head at. the lower end of the float, a vcseel engaging chain suspended from said head, air supplying hose attached to said head, a water exhausting pipe connected to the upper end of the lloat, an injector tube within the float between the air inlet and Water outletv ends thereof, and a com'bined water pump and air compressor arranged at a distance from the float operatively connected to said pipe and said hose. 4 s
A vessel raising float comprising a substantially pear-shaped vertical hollow body,
neoaaae an inlet head at the lower end of the body,
chain suspending` means carried by said head, an air supplying hose connected to said head, a valve casing at the upper end of the body, a water exhaust pipe attached to said casing, al valve within the Said casing, and a funnel-shaped member axially within the body secured to said casing at the Smaller end and with its open larger end po sitioned adjacent said head.
` l. A vessel raising lioat comprising a substantially pear-shaped vertical hollow body, an inlet head at the lower end of the body, an air Supplying hose connected to said head, a valve casing at the upper end of the body, a wat-er exhaust pipe attached to said casing, a Valve within the said casing, a funnel- Shaped member axially arranged within the body secured to said easing at the smaller end and with its open larger end positioned adjacent said head, a vessel engaging chain detachably suspended from said head, a a
weight carried by said chain, anda combined water pump and air compressor operatively connected to the said hose and said pipe.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature.
