Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. Herman- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ophthalmic Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ophthalmic mountings and has particular reference to anovel and improved construction of nose bearing or engaging member for use upon such mountings.
One of the leading objects of the present invention is the provision of a novel automatically fitting nose engaging member or guard which shall be so constructed as to permit of ready relative adjustment of the several parts to the general configuration of the nose, and in which the several parts will in addition possess to a maximum degree the property of automatic adjustment to exactly fit and most securely and comfortably engage the nose and secure the mounting in position thereon.
A further object of my invention is the provision of an improved guard or nose engaging member which may be placed on the nose to allow it to automatically adapt itself thereto and fit-thereon, and in which the parts may subsequently be locked .or-secured at the said adjustment to at all times insure correct fitting ofthe mounting on the face.
Other bjects and advantages'of my improved structure should be readily apparent y reference to the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, and it will be understood that I maymake any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my invention.

views, the numeral 1 denotes the bridging member connecting the lenses and illustrated as of the fingerpiece type, although it will be understood that other styles of bridging members may be employed if desired, said bridging member bearing at its ends the clips 2 for attachment of the lenses 3 of the mounting. In the form of invention illustrated I have shown as rising from the bridge 1 the posts 4, on which are pivotally mounted my improved guard levers comprising the handle portion 5, the bearing arm 6 terminating in a cross member having the arms 7 and 8 which project in opposite di rections.
In he form of my device particularly,
illustrated in Fig. III, I have shown the cross portion or double arms 7 and 8 as bent upwardly substantially at right angles to the plane of the bearing portion 6, the arm 7 being twisted or looped to bring the plane of its material substantially parallel to the side of the nose and curving upwardly in a slender pliable arm adapted to bear the upper nose engaging or bearing pad 9. The arm 8, on the other hand, is formed into a horizontally looped portion and has pivotally secured to its end the elongated guard member 10 provided with an upward bearing pad 11.
lVhile various forms of connection between the guard 10 and arm 8 may be employed, I preferably make use of that illustrated, consisting of the extension or ear 19. formed on the end of the arm 8 and adapted to be bent into a U-shaped loop having the arms of the U connected by the rivet or pintle 13 which passes through the ear 1 1 on the guard 10 to pivotally secure the ear in position. It is to be noted that the loop ordinarily depends an appreciable amount below the ear 14: to permit of free rocking movement of the guard, the lower end of the loop, however, being adapted to engage the rear face of the guard to serve as a stop to limit its pivotal movement in one direction, while the lug 15 on the arm 8 serves to engage the upper portion of the guard plate to limit its movement in th opposite direction.
By reference to the drawings it will thus be seen that I have provided a novel and improved guard comprising the pliable upwardly extending readily adjustable arm 7 bearing the gripping or flesh engaging pad 9 and the second rocking or automatically adjustable guard 10 bearing the pad 11 and adapted to automatically fit itself to the nose of the wearer below the pad 9 and to bear the weight of the mounting, the upper portion of said guard being disposed substantially in line with the pad to suitably fit th nose and having its lower portion' extending forwardly to aid in balancing the mounting on the face.
Particular attention is invited to the fact that on account of the pliability of the arm 7 and the pliable loop formed in the arm 8, the upper pad and lower guard may be readily adjusted as desired to vary their relationship one to the other and to exactly fit the parts to the face, thus permitting of maximum fitting and adjustment.
In addition if th adjuster in place of having the lower guard at all times rocking, prefers to considerably curtail the rocking movement of the guard, the lower portion of the loop formed by the ear extension 12 may be grasped by a pair of pliers and pinched, as indicated in Fig. VI, into'ti'ght engagement with the lower edge of the car 14:, thus partially or entirely preventing any rocking movement of this guard. This action may be taken either before the mounting is applied to the face of the wearer and the entire fitting accomplished by simply bending of the pliable parts, or the mounting may be placed on the face and the guard 10 allowed to assume its normal position'and the arm 8 adjusted'as desired, and then as a final step the loop pinched to secure the guard against further rocking movement so guard ear.
