To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, DAYTON D. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Articulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to artificial tooth articulators and is designed more especially as an attachment foi or improvement in the well known Gysi simplex artikulator or any other anatomical articulator, the special object of the invention being to produce an articulator in which the tooth cusp is utilized as the guiding factor in mandibular movements, thusV ignoring condyle devices and avoiding preliminary adjustments for the accommodation of individual cases, and provided dentures -which determine the niandibular movement as distinguished from ai'ticulators which provide dentures to conforni to individual condyle path movements. A further object is to produce an articulator which makes provision for the anteroposterior movement of the lower` jaw, and
for the prevention of ,injury to the teeth during thev process of grinding them.
With these general objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel and use ful features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the said drawing, where like reference characters refer to corresponding parts, 1 indicates a base plate upon a frame having two rear supporting legs 2, and provided at its front end with a longitudinally eX- tendiiig Vshaped guide 3 having vertical wall edges or guards l, and provided at its rear end with rearwardly projecting guide pins 5 and a screw 6 midway between said pins, the screw being upset at the front end at 7 to prevent disengagement from the base.
An upright skeleton frame is mounted slidingly on said pins and is adjustable back and forth by said screw 6. Said frame is Specification of Letters Patent.

substantially rectangular in form and comprises a lower cross bar 8 through which the pins and screws extend, a pair of standards 9 extending divergeiitly upward and leaning slightly rearward, and a top cross bar 1() connecting the standards and provided near its ends with upwardly projecting pins ll, rearwardly facing walls 12 and a springarm 13.
A movable member of substantially T shape in plan view, comprises the cross-head 141 and the forwardly projecting stein 15, and the latter is provided with a depending finger 1G engaging the guide 3, and is equipped with a rearwardly projecting indicator 17. The cross-head 14 has a central downwardly and rearwardly sloping or inclined face 18 engaged by the overlying free end of the spring-arm 13. Said cross-head 14 is also provided at its ends with a pair of forwardly and downwardly sloping cam lugs 19 litting upon pins 11 and with a pair of vertical shoulders 2O flanking the inner sides of said pins. The cross-head is furthermore provided with a pair of pins 21 extending downwardly and forwardly against the rearwardly-facing walls 12 of cross bar 10 of the upright frame.
The stem 15 is of sectional construction, that is to say the front or major portion of the stem is provided with a pair of rearwardly projecting pins 22 engaging forwardly projecting socket arm 23 of the cross-head 111, and to secure the stem sections rigidly together when the desired adjustment is attained, clamping screws 211 are mounted in the socket arms 23 and impinge upon the pins 22.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by loosening clamping screws 241 and then turning screw 6 in the proper direction, the articulator can be lengthened or shortened between tlie finger 16 and the upright frame, and secured rigidly in such adjustment by screwing home the set screws 2li. By means of gypsum indicated by dotted lines 25 the row of teeth 26 for the lower jaw, is secured in position. Gypsum indicated by dotted lines at 27 is also employed for securing the row of teeth 28 for the upper jaw, in position. The gypsum indicated at 25 being secured in the customary manner to the base plate, and the gypsum indicated at 27 to the stem of the Tshaped frame 15, which frame can be raised and lowered upon the pins 21 as the axis of movement.
I/Vith the Gysi articulator shallow cusps are produced anld these restrict the mandbular movement of the jaws t-o an undesirable extent. I/Vith my attachment the teeth can be ground to give harmonious and synchronous contact for all the teeth and at the same time accommodate unrestricted mandbular or jaw movement, and hence the same eiiicient service as perfect and natural teeth. It is possible to so grind the teeth because the guide 3 for linger 1G insures the producing of deep cusps, and the adj ustability of the lower or base member independent of the upper jaw or hinged member enables the operator to set the teeth in position to bite accuratel i and then grind them to reduce the high points until harmonious and synchronous contact is obtained, the grinding action being accomplished by applying lateral pressure alternately on opposite sides of the guide lingers, and in this action, as will be apparent, the extensions of the wall of the guide prevent accidental disengagement of the pin from the guide and the possibility of chipping the :front teeth or the incisors.
In the grinding action, the pins 2l alteri nately form pivotal points having slight arcuate movement on shoulders l2, and the pins ll and cam lugs/ 19important elements in the operation of the Gysi articulator-are functionless. The indicator 17 in conjunction with the scale points 29 on arms l0, performs their usual function, as gages in the proper setting of the rows of teeth in the articulator. The screw G enables the operator to obtain the most accurate of ad-v justments in grinding the adjacent faces of cuspid and bicuspid teeth.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced an articulator possessing the features of advantage set forth in the statement of the object of the invention, and which may be modilied in minor particulars without departing from the principle of construction involved or `the scope of the appended claims.

A dental articulator comprising a standard'having widely spaced rearwardlyfacing shoulders, a base plate slidingly connected to the standard and supporting the latter, and provided at the front end with a longitudinal guide of V-form in cross-sec.- tion, the sides of said guide having parallel extensions projecting vertically upward, means for effecting baclr-and-forth adjustment of said standard relative to said base, a horizontally arranged T-sha-ped member overlying the standard and base plate'and provided at the ends of its head with pins depending onto the top of the standard and engaging the rearwardly-facing shoulders thereof, and with a depending nger resting on said V-shaped guide, and a spring apply ing downward pressure on the head of the Teshaped member to hold'the same yieldingly depressed.
