Description

E. W. SOUTHWORTH.
improvement in Manufacture of Bots and Shoes.
Patented Aug` 6,1872.
'liumufwwr wif/fm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD W. SOUTHVVORTH, OF ASHLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEORGE F. SEAVER, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,162, dated August 6, 187:2.
SrEcrFrcATroN.
I, EDWARD W. SoUTHwoRTH, of Ashland, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massa` chusetts, have invented certain Improvements in the Manufacture of Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing is a central vertical longitudinal section. Figs. 2
and 3 are transverse vertical sections takenv in the lines A B and X Y; and Fig. et is a top view, with portions of the several parts removed, of my invention.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the manufacture of boots and shoes, whereby the saving of time, labor, and expense is secured. My improvements consist, mainly, in forming in the desired-shape, bypressure in molds or dies or by other suitable means, the sole, welt, lining and fillings, and shank and fillings, and attaching them to each other so that they shall form one part, and be at once applied to the boot or shoe, ready to be pegged, &c., instead of attaching the soles, welts, Svc., one at a time, to the boot or shoe and to each other, as heretofore.
'ure in molds or dies or by any suitable means,
and connected together. A shank,d, and its -fillings e, or a single shank, are also properly formed,by pressure or otherwise, and attached to each other and to the sole c. The whole of the above-mentioned parts, thus forming one piece of the required shape, is then applied to the last, and connected with the upper of the boot or shoe, thereby saving thetime, trouble, and expense ordinarily required in attaching and fitting to the shape of the last 011e piece at a time.
The llings maybe formed in olle piece with the lining or shank, or as shown; or a steel shank may be used 5 or a half or whole welt may be employed; or a whole double or half double sole may be used by my improved inethod of constructionwith. equal facility.
Having thus described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Let-ters Patent, is-
A sole, a, welt f, lining b and filling e, and shank d and its lling e, formed inthe desired shape by pressure in molds or dies, or by other suitable means, and attached to each other so as to form one part, and to allow of its being applied to a last of a bootor shoe in one piece, substantially as specified.
In testimonywhereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD W. SOUTHWORTH.
