PORCH SHADE on BLIND.
1,301,663. Specification of Letters Patent. P t t 22, 191
Original application filed. February 25, 1915, Serial No. 10,583. Divided and this application filed May 24, 1916. Serial No. 99,529.
To all whom it may concern:
I strands 2, which pass between them. The Be it known that I, HENRY E. RATHBUN,
strips or slats 3 are secured together in this a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of "Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Porch Shades'or Blinds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to) a porch shade, or blind, and more particularly to the cord and pulley attachment of a porch shadeor blind, of the class where there are a series of strips or slats secured together and held in place by strands, and having a top edge instance by rivets 4.
There are in this instance three pulley frames 5, 6, and 7, located on the front of the shade, at the top edge 3, and secured to said edge. The pulley frame 5 has a Single ulley roll, as shown in Fig. 3, and the pulley frames 6 and 7 have two pulley rolls. The pulley rolls are preferably made of metal with a grooved periphery, and preferably have a rotary movement in their supporting frame. The pulley frame 7, holding two pulleys, is preferably located at or and a bottom edge, and adapted to be rolled, near the end of the top edge 3,as shown in 7 or drawn up, and held in its rolled or drawn Fig. 1. up position by means of cords and pulleys, Through a loop extension on each pulley the pulleys being attached preferably to the frame 5, 6, and 7, passes a two prong metal top edge of the shade. staple 8, preferably of wire, and of loop The object of my invention is to provide shape. The free e of h staples 8 p ss 75 an improved cord and pulley mechanism for through openings in the top edge 3, t secure porch shades and blinds of the class rethe pulleys thereto, and upon the opposite ferred to. side of the top edge are bent outwardly, and

features of construction of my improve- The cord holder 9 is located upon the rear ments, as will be hereinafter fully described. side of the shade or blind, and is preferably Referring to the drawing made of wire and of open end loop shape. 85
Figure 1 is a front view of the upper part having its lower end 9" contracted or of of a porch shade or blind, with my improved reduced width. I cord and pulley attachment combined there- A cord 10, forming a part of the cord with. mechanism, has a knotted or enlarged end Fig. 2 is a rear view of the parts shown 10 thereon, which is passed through the 90 in Fig. 1. enlarged part of the holder 9, as shown in Fig. 3 is a section, on line 3, 8, Fig. 1, Fig. 5, and then drawn down into the conlooking in the direction of arrow (1, same tracted part of said holder, as shown in Fig. figure. 4:, to be detachably secured to said holder.
Fig. 4 shows, on an enlarged scale, a cord A second cord 11 has a knot or enlarged 95 holder detached, and the enlarged end of a end 11 at its end, see Fig. 2, which is passed cord secured therein. through the enlarged part of the holder 9 Fig. 5 corresponds to Fig. 4, but shows and drawn down into the contracted part 9" the end of the cord raised, and in its detach- I of said holder, shown at the left in Fig. 2. able position. The cord 10 extends down at the rear of 100 In the accompanying drawing, 1 are flat the shade and around the lower edge, not strips or slats which form the body of the shown, and up the front side of the shade shade, 2 are flexible strands which extend and over the pulley 5 at the left, Fig. 1, and upon opposite sides of the slats in the usual then over the double pulleys 6, and 7, shown and well known way, to secure said slats in Fig. 1. The cord 11 corresponds to the 105 together and hold them in position. 3 is cord 10, but passes only over the two double the top edge of the shade, consisting in this pulleys 6, and 7, shown at the right in Fig. 1. instance of three strips or slats, having their By means of the cords 10, and 11, the contiguous faces corrugated or grooved lonshade is raised or lowered in the usual way,
gitudinally, to secure the upper ends of the as desired. 11
In the construction shown in the drawing, the cord holder 9,. on the rear, of the top, edge, is secured thereto by the same staple that secures the pulley on the frontside-ofthe top edge, and at the same operation, by bending over. the projecting endsor prongs on said staple; which extends through the eyes or. cpeningsin said holden The ends of the cords which are used to raise andloWer the shade, are knotted or made with enlarged ends, Which are detachably'secured' tothe holder 9, independent of the-top edge:
