J (Juvemtoz 1T9 a Z Z'rw/ro m it may comer-n: )Be it known that I, IEREMIE IRINA, a citizenqof the" United States, residing at Dayton, in the county-of Montgomery and State I of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Dispensers, of which the following is a Specification.
f -T he object of the invention is to provide impleand eflicient means adapted to be car- 'ried byvehicles for use on water or land, for producing and dispensing a concealing 'screen fofsmoke or vapor, which may or may jnotbe of a poisonous character, as a source (of-protection against an enemy. The idea. v has been conceived of enveloping a ship at sea-with a cloud of smoke or vapor so as to c'onceal it from thejoccupants of an enemy craft, with a viewto minimizing the risk of injury by torpedoes, gun fire and the like,
j'ectiof the present invention is to provide efficient meansffor carrying out this idea, 1 n'ot only with reference to vessels at sea, but ,7 also troop, munition and supply trains within thewar zone on land. 7
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description is developed, it being understood that only the essential featuresare disclosed and that variouschanges in detail may be resorted to, in the'adaptation of the same to dilferent types nd styles of vehicles or means of convey- -.ance,l and different conditions of use and aspecial i requirements, without departing from the spirit of the invention. 11; In'the drawing 7 g .Figure 1 isa side view partly in section oflan' apparatus embodying the invention appliedto a ship.
f V-Fig.v 2 is "a plan view of the same.
3 Fig. '3 is a side view of an embodiment of train-Q.- V
Fig. 4is%a longitudinal sectional vlew of the generator by means of which a dense In'the construction illustrated, more espe- "ciallyinFigs l and 2, a conductor is employed,' extending, for example, longitudinallyof the vehicle, such as a ship, and proividedat, its extremities and at suitable intermediate points with outlets or dispensing nozzles 11 and 12, adjustable valves or deflectors 13ibeing employed at the intersec by rendering the mark invisible, and the obapparatus.
the apparatus applied to a troop or similarmake is provided for use in the apparatus.

other, or to cut off one or more of the same i as may be required. These dlscharge nozzles or outlets may be located at both ends of the vehicle, and communicating with the conductor at an intermediate point is a supply drum 15! into which discharges a generator 15, which may be of any suitable type adapted to produce a dense smoke, or produce a gas. adapted on exposure to the air to produce a dense smoke, andwhich may if desired embody a poisonous or irritant gas or vapor to add to the confusion of the enemy whether in front or in rear of the vessel. To insure the forcible discharging ofthe smoke or vapor, blast fans 16 may be employed, the casing 17 thereof being in communication with air tubes 18 which may draw a supply from above the vessel at an intermediate point, as shown. At'the point of communication of the drum 14, into which the blast fans discharge, with the conductor, may be arranged a deflect-or, or valve 19 which may be adjusted to direct the supply of smoke or other vapor either forwardly or rearwardly. Also a suitable elevated lookout 20 may be employed as a means of protecting the officer in charge from the effects of the'discharge from the When, as indicated in Fig. 3, the device is applied to a land vehicle, such as a train, a similar arrangement may be utilized with more or less modification, but in this case the furnace of the engine indicated at 21 may be utilized as the generator for the smoke or poisonous gas, or'both, a blast fan 22 being employed to induce a draftwhich serves not only to discharge the vapor. at the forward endof the train but to support combustion in the engine furnace, or fire-box. Also auxiliary air inlets 23 7 may be employed, especially when the admixture of air with the vapor discharged by the generator is necessary to produce the desired'efiect in the matter'of forming a dense cloud or concealing curtain.
