Be it known that I, CHARLns A. STICK# nana citizen of the United States, and resident- ,of Chattanooga, Tennessee, have invented certain new and l useful Improvements in Punches and Dies for Embossing Characters and Raising Bosses Therefor Previous to the Embossing Actions, of which the following is a specication.
- The invention relates to dies for embossing printing plates as used in addressing `machines, and the like 'and particularly'to that class of dies which displace the metal of the plate to one side of its normal plane and forms the-embossing on this raised or4 displaced portion ofthe metal.

tending ab'ove the same, and with a recess 12 between them. The punch b has a raised portion 13 thereon with a rib 14 correspondlng vto the recess 10 in the die and it has also a raised portion 15 to enter between the projections 11. ln Fig. 2 the die and punch are about to perform theirfunctipns in connectionwith the plate and Fig. 3 shows the condition of the plate after the punch has been brought down to the limit of its stroke from which it will be seen that the character is raised at a' between the rib 14 and groove or recess 1() of the punch and die faces and the portion 15 of the unch depresses or displaces the ,metal of-.t e plate in advance of the position where the letter is embossed,
this displacing action being eiected by the projecting portion 15 ofthe punch operating between theribs'or projections 11 of the 1 die. My improved punch and die allows much closer line spacing than dies used heretofore, because there is no part of the die proper located above or below the embossing portion or face which projects above said facefand the character forming groove and rib may extend close to the top and bottom of the punch and die faces.
The operation may be completed at the end of a line by blanking down the last cone portion which has no character embossed thereon. l
What I claim is:
l. A punch and die for embossing metal plates, said die having a face With a character forming recess and a portion to one side'of said face which in cooperation With the punch will displace the metal of the plate to form a raised base for the embossing of the next character thereon by said character forming portion, said punch having portions complementary to the character /Orming recess and the portion to one side of the same, substantially as described.
2. A punch and die for embossing metal plates, said die having a face With a character forming recess and a laterally disposed recess Which in coperation with the punch will displace the metall of the plate'to form a raised base for the embossing of the next character thereon by said character forming .-portion, said laterally disposed recess having marginal ribs extending from one side of the die and projecting above the plane of the character forming face and in line With the upper and lower portions of said face, said ribs being of a length substantially equal to the Width ofthe character forming face, said punch having portions complementary to the character forming recess and the laterally' disposed recess, substantially as describe ln testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
