Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1919.
Application filed December 3, 1915. Serial No. 64,861.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ITREDERICKv W. HOCH- STETTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Light-Regula tors for Projecting Moving Pictures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
his invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used in conjunction with moving picture apparatus.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a device designed to be employed particularly on n moving picture machine whereby the marginal rays of light operative on the ictures when projected will be cut-out so tiat only the dlrect rays of the light will be utilized, thus overcoming the variations of light which tend to largely impair the etlect` of the pictures incident to the methods of projection ordinarily employed. This is accomplished mainly by providing an apertured opaque diaphragm adapted to be disposed in the path of projection of the pictures of a ilm so that the marginal rays of light operative on the pictures will be cut-out.
A further object of the invention is to provide a. light regulator of a simple and elicient construction, and which may be made so as to be adapted for use' in conjunction with moving picture projecting machines of various types.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the Views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front View of one form of light regulator embodying my, invention.
ig. 2 is a section taken on the line II-II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the manner in which the device may be used in conjunction with a moving picture projecting machine, and
Fig.V 4 is a section taken through the lens barrel of the machine showing the preferred manner of using the device.
The device, or light regulator has a diaphragm, or plate 1() made of metal, or any other desired opaque material, and thisdiaphra m is pre erably circular in shape so as to` e mounted interiorly of the lens barrel, as l1, ofv a moving picture projecting machine, as 12, of a suitalble type, though this da hragm may be of any other desired form wiiereby it may ybe eii'ectually used by being mounted in the lens barrel, or otherwise employed in conjunction therewith.
Through the diaphragm 10 is an aperture 13 which is preferably substantially similar in shape to each picture of, for instance, a film, as 14, adapted -to be transmitted through the projecting machines. On the peripheral edge of the diaphragm 10 may be a projecting annular flange l5 serving to permit the diaphragm to "be retained in a true vertical position in the lens barrel, or any other suitable means may be employed for properly supporting the diaphragm for use with the machine.
When the device is employed in conjunction with a moving picture projecting machine provided with two lenses, as 16 and 17, in its lens barrel, the device may be disposed in the barrel back of the lens 16, as indicated, at 18, or it may be arranged in the barrel between the lenses, as at 19, or the device may be positioned in the free end of the barrel, as at 20, in front of the lens 17. Vhen only one lens is used in the barrel of the machine the device may be disposed in front, or in the back of the lens. In each instance the device is arranged so that the aperture 13 of the diaphragm will be in the optical axis of the pictures when being projected, and the device is also disposed so that the annular ange 15 will preferably be in opposed relation to the lamp of the machine. The rays of the light will then be directed into the annular flange so that the inner ra s will pass through the aperture of the iaphragm whilethe outer rays of light will be cut-out by contacting with the inner surface of the annular flange as well as contacting with the margin-a1 parts of the diaphragm 10. Only the direct or inner rays of the light will thereby pass through the aperture of the diaphragm, and the plctures appearing on the screen will be uniformly illuminated which in turn will sharpen as well as produce pronounced contrasts between the high li hts and shadows of the photography of tltie images of the pictures.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, Aor sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the serge thereof.
aving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent z- 1. The combination With a lens barrel having a lens removably secured Within one end thereof by means of a bushing having an internal configuration similar to the internal configuration of the barrel inwardly of the bushing, of an apertured diaphragm havin a marginal flange and removably slidab y positionable at points Within the barrel inwardly of the lens or Within the seeurin 'bushing at the outer side of the lens, su antial y as described.
2. The combination with a lens barrel having a pair of spaced lenses removably secured Within the ends thereof by means of bushings having infernal configurations similar to the internal configuration of the barrel bet/Ween the lenses, of an apertured diaphragm having a marginal flange and slidably positionable at points Within the barrel between the lenses or Within the securing bushings at the outer side of either of the lenses, substantially as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this second day of December A. D. 1915.
