i ELECTRIC VULCANIZER.
Specification of Letters Patent.'
Patented Apr. 22, 1919.
Application led March 6, 1917. Serial No. 152,478.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, OLIVER C. DENNIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilmette, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Vulcanizers, of which the following is a full, clear and exact description.
The invention relates to portable electric vulcanizers. One object of the invention is to provide a vulcanizer of this type which is simple in construction and in which the connections between the ilexi'ble conductor cord and the vulcanizer vare effectively protected from breakage or being short circulted.
A further' object of the invention is to provide a vulcanizer of this type which is adapted to be applied to the work by an ordinary screw clamp and which is completely disconnectiblel from the clamp.
A further object of the vinvention is to providean improved portable electric vulcanizer which is simple in construction, eiicient in operation and can be produced at a low cost.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a section of a vulcanizer embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3.
The improved vulcanizer comprises a cupshaped body having a concave bottom 5, and
a cylindrical outer wall 6, the bottom being.
concave to receive a atch to be ap lied to a tire tube or other ru ber article. II)`he body is made of sheet metal. An electric heatin or resistance element consisting of' a coil o suitable wire 7 wrapped around a strip of mica 8 and a disk 9 of mica between the heating element and the bottom 5 of the vulcauizer body, are disposed in the body. Above the heating element is placed a disk 10 of asbestos to direct the heat downwardly toward the bottom 5 and a metallic disk 11 is lIlaced on top of the asbestos disk 10. A
ho ow conoidal ca 12 is secured on the top of the disk 11. nsulation 9, heating elenient 7, asbestos 10, disk 11 and the cap plate 12 are .all secured .and clamped tgether in the bod by an inturned flange 14 on the side 6 of t e body. 'In the manufacture of the vulcanizer after the pa 9, 7, 10 and 11 have been placed in the ange 14 is bent inwardly and downwardly to hold all partsin the body in fixed and clamped relation so that separate means for securing the parts inthe vulcanizer against y, the
displacement will be. avoided. This manner of constructing the body and contained parts makes it possible to produce the vulcanizer at a low cost and prevents breakage of y said parts.
A pair of clamping members or blocks 15 and 16 of insulating material are secured on the top of disk 11 by screws 17 which ass :member 15. A bushing 21 of insulating maferial is disposed above the hole lin disk 11 to prevent electrical contact between the terminals 18 and 19 and the metallic body 11. Conductor wires 22 and 23 ci a conductor cord 24 have their terminals'extended between the clamping members 15 and 16 and the terminals 18 and 19 of the heating element are placed in contact with said conductors respectively and these terminals are clamped together 1n firm lcontact when the member 16is clamped against member 15.v
The conductor cord 24 is extended. through an opening 25 in one side of the cap 12, and is provided with a suitable plug 26 for the connection to a socket of any suitable or usual construction and which is adapted to be connected to a battery. Cord 24 is extended through hole 25 which is at one side of the cap and thence to the opposite side and connected to the clam 15, 16, so that the cord will be looped in t e capV to prevent a direct pull on the clamped conductor terminals, ifa pull should be accidentally eX- erted upon e conductor cord.
In operation, the vulcanizer, in its entirety, may b e placed on top of a patch and a tire tube or article to which the patch is to be vulcanized and held thereon by an ordinary screw clam 30 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, which 1s completely disconnectible from the vulcanizer. If desired, a pocket 27 may be formed in the top of cap 12 to receive a. centering pin or projection 28 on the screw of the clamp toposition the vulcanizer in the clamp. v
The invention exemplies a portable electric' vulcanizer which is simple in construction and can be produced at a low cost. v'Ihe several parts are eiiicientlylsecured against displacement in the body by being clamped therein without additional clamping means.
The conductor terminals are secured to terminal blocks which are protected by the cp and short circuit of the terminals is e ciently prevented. v
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the ap- .pended claims, without departing from the spirit and' scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
l. In an electric vulcanizer, the combination of a body, a resistance element, insulatipn and a metallic disk, said element, insulation and disk being disposed in superposed relation `and clamped in the body to secure the element, insulation and body against relative displacement, an insulatingclamp centrally disposed on said disk to which the terminal of the resistance element is connected, and conductors leading to said clamp.
2. In an electric vulcanizer,-the combination of a body comprising a bottom and a side wall, a resistance element, insulation and a metallic disk, said element, insulation and disk being disposed in superposed reladisposed on the disk and tion in said body, the side-wall being bent inwardly to clamp the element, insulation and disk in the body to secure them against displacement, and conductors leading lto said resistance element.
3, In an electric vulcanizer, the combination of a body comprising a bottom and a side wall, a resistance element, insulation and a metallic disk, a hollow cap, said cap, disk, element and insulation being clamped in said body by said cap, and con- 6. In a portable vulcanizer, the combina tion of a body, a resistance element, insulation, and a disk secured in said body, a clamp of insulation secured to the top of said disk, said disk having a hole therein, an insulating bushing in said hole, said element having both terminals extended through said bushing and held in said clamp and conductors having terminals held in said clamp.
7. In a portable vulcanizer, the combination of a body, a resistance element, insulation, and a disk secured in said body, a clamp of insulation secured to the top of said disk, said disk having a hole therein, one member of the said clamp having a hole therein, an insulating bushing in said hole, said element having both terminals extended through said bushing and said hole in the clamp-member and held in said clamp, and conductors having terminals held in said clamp.
8. In a portable vulcanizer, the combination of a body, a resistance element, insulation, and a disk secured in said body, a hollow conoidal ca secured to said body, a clamp of insulatlon secured to the said disk and centrally disposed within said cap, and conductors having terminals held in said clamp, the terminals from the resistance element being also held in said clamp.
9. In a portable vulcanizer,`the combination of a hollow body, a resistance element, insulation and a disk secured in said body, a hollow cap secured to said body and having a recess formed in the top thereof to receive a clamp screw, a clamp of insulation secured to the disk within said cap,
.and conductors having terminals held in said clamp.
