AUTOMATIC TRAIN-STOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed February 16, 1916. Serial No. 78,766.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED EDWARD HAS- ELTINE, a citizen of the United States, re siding in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, at R. F. D. No. 7, Springfield, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Automatic Train-Stop Used Upon Railroads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic train stops by which a train will be stopped upon passing a semaphore set at danger position.
The object of the invention is to provide an automatic train stop comprising a head having a trip portion, and pivotally supported upon levers which levers are pivotally connected intermediate their ends on a track fixture. The ends of the levers are connected with signal operating means,-
whereby in the actuation of the signals, the head is automatically raised in position to intercept the trip element on the traveling train, and through such element operate the stopping means.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view in elevation, illustrating the operation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the device in position on a track.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device, the parts being in operative relation in full lines and in inoperative relation in dotted lines.
The mechanical device forming the subject matter of this application is .designed to 'be operated by and with a signal device 1, so that when the device is set, as when the signal is at danger, a train will be stopped, or the brake thereof set.
The structure comprises levers 3 and 4, pivotally mounted intermediate their ends on blocks secured to the road bed, the lower ends of the levers being connected to a rod 2. The rod 2 is connected to or operated by the signal means 1, so that the levers are operated as the signal is raised or lowered.
A head 5 is connected to the upper ends of the levers 3 and 4. This head, when elevated is in a position to be engaged by a rod 6, depending from a valve 7 of the train'air pipe system 8. The engagement of the rod 6 with the head 5 acts to operate the valve, 7 to set the brake. It will be noted thatthe connection of the rod 6 with the head 5, is at a point on the latter interposed between the levers 3 and 4, thereby resisting a braking strain incident to such contact.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is automatic train stop comprising a head, levers pivotally supporting the head and connected to the latter on opposite side of a trip contact portion of the head, said levers being pivotally connected intermediate their ends on a track fixture, the ends of the levers remote from the head being connected to an independent element, whereby in the operation of such element there is occasioned a simultaneous movement of the head.
o ALFRED EDWARD HASELTINE.
