HARRY s. HART, or omcneo, ninnvrozs' HOPPER DUMP-GAR.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, HARRY S. HART, a c1t 1- zen of the United States, residing at Clucago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hopper pump-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hopper type of dump car.
The object of this invention is to simplify and improve dump car constructions in a novel manner to increase the .cap-aclty thereof and at the same time retain the self cleaning feature.
This and other objects are accompllshed by means of the arrangement disclosed by the accompanying sheets of drawlngs 1n Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of a railway dump car embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary planview of the same car;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same dump car taken over one of the trucks;
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the same car taken between the trucks; and
Fig. 5. is a transverse sectional view of a dump car showing a modified floor construction intermediate the trucks.
It is a well recognized fact that it is of vital importance to increase the carrying capacity of railway cars and especially dump cars for carrying coal and other dumpable materials in view of the great demand as a result of traflic conditions.
In one well known type of dump car in which the floor intermediate the trucks on eaclr side of the longitudinal center of the car 1s composed of a plurality of hopper.
portions, each including a plurality of doors hinged longitudinally of the car and swinging toward and from each other to closed and opened positions respectively, and in which the floor portion over the trucks at each end includes a long sloping member extending from the end of the car downwardly toward the transverse center line of the car, it is found that the capacity can be effectivelyv increased by changing the fioor construction over the trucks.
Referring to the figures of the drawings, it will be noted that I have shown a dump car including sides 10, ends 11, and a floor, the floor portions over the trucks being of A-shaped construction in which the apex 12 Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed Novembere, 1918. Serial No. 260,926.
of the A is located over the center sill 13, the sloping members 1-1 of the'A-shaped portion extending downwardly and outwardly toward the sides of the car. These sloping floor members 14 preferably are stationary and connected to the under frame to thereby increase the stiffness and rigidity of the car structure. 7
The discharge openings at the lower. ends of the floor portions 14 normally are closed by side dump doors 15 which preferably are pivotally connected at 16 along the lower edges of the sides 10 of the car, the swinging edges of the doors 15 when in closed position forming a tight seal with the lower edges of the floor members 14. The dump doors 15 may be provided with any suitable operating mechanism including operating shafts 17 preferably carried by the doors 15 and also chains 18 Which connect the shafts with the stationary floor portions 14.
The floor intermediate the trucks is at a lower level than the floor over the trucks and includes a plurality of longitudinally extending hoppers 19 on each side of the longitudinal center of the car, there being a longitudinally arranged shedding member 20 extending along the longitudinal center of the car and transversely arranged shed ding members 21 cooperating with or forming parts of the hoppers. Each of the longitudinally extending hoppers intermediate the trucks on each side of the longitudinal center line of the car includes a plurality of doors 22 hinged longitudinally of the car and swinging toward and from each other to closed and opened positions respectively. In Fig. 4, the doors 22 in each set slope downwardly toward each other, while in Fig. 5 the doors 22 are horizontally arranged in the same horizontal plane. These longitudinally extending hopper doors 22 may be provided with any suitable operating mechanism 23'. The floor portions over the trucks are connected with the hopper floor p'ortion intermediate the trucks by sloping member 24 which extends downwardly toward the transverse center line of the car from the apex 12 of each of the A- shaped floor portions over the trucks.
In cars of this general type heretofore built the sloping floor portion 24 is continued in the same plane to the end 11 of the car. It is apparent, therefore, that by pro viding the floor construction over the trucks as shown in this application the carrying capacity of the dump car is greatly increased and at the same time the self cleamng feature is retained. When the side dump doors 15 are opened it willbe appreciated that all of the dumpable material over the trucks will be discharged to either side of the car and when the longitudinally arranged hopper dump doors are moved 1nto an open position the remaining portion of the dump-- wardly and outwardly toward the sides of the car, the floor between the trucks being at a lower level than the floor over the trucks and comprising a plurality of longitudinally errtending hoppers on each s1de of the long tudinal center line of the car and each having a plurality of oppositely arranged swinging doors.
2. A car of the class descrlbed having sides, ends and a floor, the floor over the trucks comprising portions sloping downwardly and outwardly toward the sides of the car, the floor between the trucks being at a lower level than the floor over the trucks and comprising a plurality of longitudinally extending hoppers on each side of the longitudinal center-line of the car and each having a plurality of oppositel arranged swinging doors. hinged longitudlnally of the car and swinging toward and from each other to closed and opened positions respertively, and V door -operating mechanism for said doors.
3. A car of the class described having sides, ends, and a floor, the floor over the trucks comprising portions sloping downwardly and outwardly toward the sides of the car, side dump doors associated with said sloping portions whereby the load over the trucks may be dumped to the sides of the car, the floor between the trucks being at a lower level than the floor over the trucks and comprising a plurality of longitudinally extending hoppers on each side of the longitudinal center-line of the car and each having a plurality of oppositely arranged swinging doors hinged longitudinally of the car and swinging toward and from each other to closed and opened positions respectively.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 30th day of October, 1918.
