Description

P'. BERGEN.
NON-REFILLABLE CONTAINER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 20, 191B.
Patented Apr. 15,1919.
NI/ENTOR a/u/ 5er-gen L ro.
' PAUL BERGEN, or nrcnwoon, WIscoNsrN.
NoN-REFILLABLB CONTAINER.
To all whom/15 may concer/n.'
' Be it knownthat I, 'PAUL BERGEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Richwood, in the county of Dodge and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Non-Refillable Container, of which the following is a description. f
- My invention relates to what is generally termed a non-relillable bottle although capable of use in being embodied in other containers having a neck. The invention particularly relates to a glass container, a portion of the neck of which is adapted to be broken off for gaining access to the container, means lbeing provided to prevent the refilling of the container otherwise than by breaking the neck.
The prime object of my invention is to improve the bottle sealing means, whereby various advantages and numerous results are obtained, among which are'the following: The fracture of the bottle neck will be required to follow predetermined lines, whereby the permanent neck portion will not present a jagged form; the base portion or permanent part of the neck will have the strength to withstand the forcing'of a cork therein 'after the upper portion ofthe neck has been broken of the locking lingers for locking the y'cap in Vplace are-givenifirm en'- gagement within medium of a metallic bushing provided for the purpose as distinguished from engagement with shoulders or the like formed integrally on the inner wall of the neck; the form and arrangement of the parts are such to promote simplicity and cheapness of manufacture, as well as convenience in producing the final assemblage.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure lis a central vertical section of a bottle neck having my invention applied thereto, parts being shown in positions forming a closure of the neck;
Fig. 2 is an inverted sectional plan view taken in a plane corresponding with the line 2 2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking device;
Specification of Letters Patent.
the bottle neck through the For the indicated purpose the neck is provided with a series of recesses 12 between which the neck presents vertical ribs or beads 13. In the beads l13 horizontal notches 14: are produced following the general y Patented Apr. 15, 1919. Application filed May 20, 1918. Serial No. 235,679.
rounded lines of the neck, the notches thus serving to vweaken the neck at the beads transversely of said beads. Also, to further determine the line of fracture, I produce shallow horizontal notches 15 in the material of the body of the neck 11 at the recesses 12 and in line with the notches 14. Thus, `the notches 14, 15 make up an annular series, the respective not-ches alternating and the `whole producing a weakened annular line broken in its continuity only at the sides of each bead 13.
A sealing cap 16 of generally inverted Acup-shape is provided to cover the top of the neck and extend downward at the outside thereof. The said cap 16 carries locks ing fingers 17 which depend from the inner side of the top lof the cap, four of such ngers being employed in the illustrated form and disposed 90o apart. The fingers 17 are of spring metal and the lower ends 18 thereof are bent outwardly to produce hooks. In order kto give a firm yengagement to the hooked ends of the ngers, I provide the 'bottle neck with a bushing 19,the lower edge of which is adapted to be engaged by said hooks. The bushing 19 may be secured in any suitable manner; in the form shown in Fig. 1 the bushing is formed with a top flange 2O to rest on the bottle neck and below said neck exterior threads are formed on the bushing to engage internal threads on the bottle neck as indicated at 21. In the form shown in Fig. et the parts are the saine except that an external depending annular flange 212' is formed on the outer edge of the top flange 20a-1 and Vhas internal threads to engage external threads on the bottle neck as indicated at 21b. f
VIn the illustrated construction, the fingers v 17 are permanently secured to the cap 16 as follows: Said fingers are formed integral is placed against the underside of the top of the cap. YAny ou-ter ring 23 extends about the head 22 between the same and the Vdepending iiange or skirt of the cap 16 and a second ring 21 is placed against the under sideof the` head 22fwithin the fingers 17.
The cap 1 6 hasa central depending head 25, the Vvbase of which is contracted to form a .neck25a- With the parts assenibledin the cap 16, Yit -beiiig'understood that; the latter is inverted, molten metal 26 ispoured intoV the cap so that the elements 22, 23, 24, a `will be cast in said molten met-al and held Y firmly in rigid relation to each other and rigid'with the cap 16. The inner edge of Y the ring 24 is beveled Yas clearly shown, in'
Figs. 1 and 4 to allowa substantialainount of the molten metal 26 to-extend about the contracted neck 25?. The knob 25 is accommodated iii a central opening 22a in the head or disk 22. The ribs 13 give the otherwise weakened neck the Vstrength to withstand `end. pressure, 4and those portions of vsaid ribs below' the notches 1l serve, when the upper section of tlie'neck Visbroken off, to strengthen the remaining portion against the strain of forcing ay cork therein.
I would state in yconclusion tliat'while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of niyinventio-n, I do not limit myself strictly to the Vmechanical `details herein illustrated,since manifestly the same 'Copies o f this patent'iiiay be obtained for v'ters Patent: with adisk-like head 22, the planes of vwhich. lingers are 'bent downward,`and said head" can be considerably .varied Without deparl the bushing and having hooked ends adapt- .ed to engage the lower edge of said bushing.
2. Closure ymeans Afor-thejneck of a conextend downward ingthe neck, ringsl inside and' out-side the fingers the inner side. of the top, and metaleast inthe interior of vthe `oap'aiid extending about the upper ends of the iingersand aib-.outthe l said inner and outer rings.`
3i. .Closure Ymeans for tlieneck of aconytailler,'including-- apap for .the neck,y spring .fingers-at the interior of- 'thecap .adapted 1 to extend .downwards inY the neck, rings inL side and outside the fingers atthe inner side of `the top,and V,meta-l cast in the interior of thecap andV extending about the upper ends of Itheingers and about the said `in-V nei'- andfouter rings; together with ka depending knob Von'tlieinterior of the capv at the'centen saidvknob having a :contracted base forming a neck uniting the knob with the cap, the said metal extending close about Y Itainer, including acap for the neck, spring fingers'at the interior ofthe cap adapted to the neck of the knob, and means engageable "by saidngers. l .A V-
