ments named with other elements closing the upper ends of the shell and casing.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the boiler, with means shown in elevation for maintaining reduced pressure Within the outer casing.
Fig. 2 is a horizontalsection taken on a plane somewhat below the center of the ver tical tubes of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail in section showing portions of the inner shell and outer casing and means for connecting I the same with elements for closing the upper ends of the shell and casing.
Fig. 4 is a detail in section showing the connections of the shell and casing with the base.
In the drawings 1 designates a boiler of the vertical fire tube type. The boiler shell is supported upon a base 2 of usual construction which has a grate 3 mounted therein and forms an ash-pit underneath the grate. A fire box 4 is provided in the boiler shell and extends upwardly from the bottom thereof. A smoke box 5 is provided at the top of the boiler and communicates with the fire box through fire tubes 6 extending through the boiler shell. In the present embodiment the smoke box 5 is frusto'conical in shape and has a vertical flange 7 formed at its lower end, the lower edges of said flange being beveled upwardly from the outer surface thereof. The boiler 1 comprises a cylindrical shell 8, and top and bottom members 9 and 10 respectively, the fire box 4. being formed in said bottom 10. The upper end of the cylindrical shell 8 extends above the top 9, the edge thereof being beveled downwardly from the inner surface thereof to properly engage the beveled edge of the flange 7. A ring 11 is secured adj acent the upper edge of the shell 8 and extends upwardly therefrom forming a groove with the beveled edge of the shell adapted to receive the flange 7 of the smoke box. A series of cleats 12 are secured upon the inner surface of the smoke box 5 adjacent the flange 7, and respective studs 13 are screw threaded into the top 9 of the boiler shell and engage holes in said cleats with their upper ends, nuts 14 being screw threaded upon the upper end of said studs above the cleats whereby said smoke box may be firmly clamped down upon the boiler shell. A gasket 15 of fire proof material is interposed between the beveled upper edge of the shell 8 and the corresponding beveled surface of the flange 7 to provide a pressure tight joint.
The bottom 10 of the boiler shell is sesecured to the shell 8 through the medium of a. mud ring 16. A flange 17 is secured to said mud ring and by meansof screws 18, a gasket 19 being interposed between the abuting surfaces to obtain a pressure tight joint. An outer casing 20 is provided and surrounds the shell 8, there being a space therebetween, as designated at 21. The lower end of the outer casing 20 is flanged outwardly, as designated at 22, and is secured to the annular base plate 17 by means of bolts 23, a gasket 24 being interposed between the abutting surfaces to obtain a pressure tight joint. The upper ends of the outer casing 20 has its edge beveled downwardly from the inner surface of the casing, and an angle ring 25 is secured to said casing adjacent the upper edge thereof and has the upper end thereof projecting above the edge of the casing to form a groove with the beveled edge of the casing. An upper casing member 26 is provided and is frusto-conical in shape to correspond with the shape of the smoke box 5. The upper end of the. outer casing member 26 is riveted to the upper end of the smoke box 5 whereby a pressure tight j oint is formed therewith. The lower end of said upper casing has a downwardly extending vertical flange 27 formed thereon, the edge thereof being beveled downwardly from the inner surface thereof to correspond with the beveled edge of the outer casing 20 and is engaged by the groove formed by said beveled edge of the casing 20 and the ring 25. An annular ring 28 is secured upon said upper casing member adj-acent the flange 27 thereof, the free end thereof being in vertical alinement with the free end of the amiular ring The upper casing member 26 and the outer casing 20 are secured together by means of bolts 29 engaging corresponding holesin the free ends of the annular rings 25 and 28, a gasket 30 being interposed between the beveled edge.
of the outer casing and the beveled edge of the flange of the upper casing member to provide a pressure tight joint, the upwardly extending portion of the annular ring 25 serving 7 to retain the gasket in proper relation with the opposing surfaces. A series of ribs 31 are secured upon the inner surface of the outer casing and have horizontal projections engaging the outer surface of the boiler shell 8. Pipes 32 and 4:5 passthr'ough the outer casing and the inclosure formed by said outer casing and the boiler shell and communicate with the interior of the boiler to pass water therein and conducts steam therethrough for the practical operation of the boiler. S-tufling boxes.
33 of usual construction are secured upon the outer casing 20 and embrace said pipes 32 to exclude atmospheric pressure from between the shell and the outer casing. Manholes 34; are provided at convenient places in order that the interior of the boiler may be cleaned and prepared. The manholes comprise holes cut in the shell 8 and the outer casin 20 and b-ushin 's 35 intera b posed between the outer casing and the shell and surrounding said holes and secured to said outer casing and shell to provide pressure tight joints therebetween. Man hole covers 36 are provided to close the holes in the shell, they being of usual construction and needing no further description here.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for are carried up through the smoke box 5 into a flue 40 of usual construction.
A pipe 41 communicates with the inclosure between the outer casing andthe shell of the boiler and leads to the intake of a vacuum pump A2 of usual construction. A steam motor 43 of usual construction is provided and drives the vacuum pump through the medium of the shaft 44. The steam motor is driven by means of steam from the boiler 1 which is conducted therefrom to the steam motor through pipe 45.
It will be noted that in the preferred embodiment I have shown a vacuum pump driven by a steam motor which obtains its power from the boiler. My invention may be used on hot water boilers as well as upon steam boilers, in which case the vacuum pump may be driven-by any source of power such as an electric motor and the same beneficial result obtained.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim v In a device of the class described, an inner shell, a base plate for mounting said shell, an outer casing spaced from the latter, an upper casing member carried by the outer casing, a cone shaped member carried by the upper portion of the shell and spaced from a portion of the side wall of the upper casing member, said shell, casing, upper casing member, and cone-shaped member constituting the walls of an air-tight chamber with in which reduced pressure may be maintained, and means for connecting said upper casing member with the outer casing and comprising an annular member including flanges extending at an obtuse angle with reference to each other, means for securing the annular member to the upper casing member, a flanged ring secured to the upper portion of the outer casing, packing material between said upper portion of the outer casing and the casing member, said packing material being retained in position by the flanged ring, and means for retaining said flanged ring in position.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
ERNEST JAMES QUINN.
