Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919 Application filed October 26, 1917. Serial No. 198,655.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN JOSHUA DU Bosn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lisbon, in the county of Lincoln and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Chilling and Drying Air, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in devices for chilling'and drying air to fit the air for use in sick-rooms, living-rooms, hospitals and rooms in which perishable commodities are stored.

In the present embodiment of the invention a casing 1 is provided, of substantially rectangular form, having, however, slight depressions in the bottom, centrally located between the ice boxes, to be described farther on, and in these respective depressions are provided drainage valves or tubes which reach the open air below the bottom and are stoppered when the machine is in operation.
This casing is adapted to be supported by casters 4 which are supported by legs 5 depending-from the casing, and means is provided for lifting the casing to support the same with the casters out of contact with the floor. The said means comprises pins 6 which are mounted to slide in the legs and each pin is normally pressed upwardly by a spring 7 which is arranged between the leg and the pin. The pins are adapted to be forced downwardly by cams 8 which are journaled on shafts 9 arranged transversely of the casing at the ends thereof, and each shaft has an upstanding arm 10 intermediate its ends. These arms 10 are connected by a link 11, and-it will be obvious that when one shaft is oscillated the other is oscillated therewith. The shafts are oscillated by means of a lever 12 which is secured to one of the shafts, and by means of the lever the casing may be lifted into the position of Figs. 1 and 2, being then supported by the pins 6 instead of by the casters.
The container is covered by a cover 13 having depending flanges fitting about the top of the container, and the said cover has openings 14 and 15 at its ends, the said openings extending practically the full width of the casing. Within the container is arranged a plurality of series of ice holders 16 and 17, the members of the series alternating as shown in Fig. 2. The members of the series 16 have rounded bottoms, as shown, and they are arranged with their bottoms spaced above the bottom of the casing. The members of the series 17 have rounded tops, as also shown in Fig. 2, the said tops being spaced below the top of the casing. The tops 18 and 19 of the ice containers are removable to permit access to the interior of the containers, and a deflector 20 is arranged below the bottom of each container 16 and above the top of each container 17, the said deflectors consisting of plates having a concaved body, as shown in Fig. 7 and side flanges, each of'which is rovided at its free edge with an inturned rib. These ribs are connected with the top and bottom of the casing, and they not only space the ice containers 16 and 17 but they also deflect the air which is passed through the casing between the containers in a manner to be presently described, and decrease friction by imparting to the air current a curved course.
A table 21 is provided for cooperating with the casing, the said table having supporting legs 22, and the legs are of such length that when the pins are moved downward to lift the casing the cover of the easing will be forced against the bottom of the ta le to make a tight joint at this point. The table top has openings 23 and 24 which are adapted to register wlth the openings 14:
and 15, and hoppers 25 and 26 are supported by the table at the openings. Each of these hoppers contains a fan 27 and 28, respectively, each fan being secured to a shaft 29,
which is journaled in a spider 30 supported the peculiar arrangement of the ice containers this current of air must follow a zigzag course, traveling alternately downwardly and upwardly until it passes out of the casing through the hopper 26. From the hopper the air, cooled and purified, may be delivered to the place of utilization in any suitable manner.
A guide is provided for insuring the proper positioning of the table with respect to the casing, said guide being an angle iron, as shown, secured to the bottom of the table. Means is also provided for clamping the cover to the casing, the said means being indicated at 36.
It will be understoood that the deflectors 20 may be dispensed with when the spaces where the ice boxes contact with the case are securely packed.
In practice, the elements 16 are attached to and are removable with the deflectors and the top of the casing.
I claim: a

A device of the character specified com prising a casing, a cover for thecasing having an opening at each end, a plurality of Series of ice receptacles Within the casing, the members of the series being arranged alternately, and the members of one series being spaced away from the top and contacting with the bottom, the members of the other series being spaced away from the bottom and contacting with the top to form a series of vertical passages between the containers, means at one opening for forcing air into the casing, and means at the other for withdrawing air.
