CHARLES J'. DALLEY, lNEHVARK, NEW JERSEY.
AUXILIARY WATER-TANK.
Specification-of Letters Patent.
Application led July 17, 1918. `Serial No. 245,430.
An object of the invention is to provide' such a tank of simple construction and which can be readily attached.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tank of the character referred to which can be directly attached to the water intake of the motor and is irmly and strongly supported thereby, requiring no exteriorv sup' ort.
With the oregoing and related objects in view, lny invention consists in the elements and combinations hereinafter referred to and pointed out in my claims.
In lthe accompanying drawing I have shown a water tank embodying my invention attached directly' to a motor of an automobile of the Ford type, but it is to be.
understood that such showing is only for the purpose of alfording a clear understanding of my invention and' not for the purpose of limitation.
In said drawing, Figure 1 is aside view with tank 1n place and connected ,to an automobile engine and radiator, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail view taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Reference characterdesignates an automobile engine and 1-1 Ya radiator. 12 is the water outlet ipe from the engine to the radiator, and 3 isa water outlet connection at the bottom of the radiator. As such automobiles are manufactured and put out, they are arranged for thermo-Siphon circulation and direct pipe connection is made from the radiator outlet 13 to the Water intake 14 of the motor, and when a tank in accordance with my invention is utilized,l such pipe connection is removed and replaced by the tank and its connections. 15 designates a tank in accordance with the present invention. Such tank may be ofany preferred form,
'but preferably it is fairly high and comparaparts broken away, and showing my` tively narrow substantially as shown in the drawing, being preferably constructed of Patented Apr. 15, 1919;
such form in order that it may be conveniently located under the hood of an automobile.
The tank is directly connected to and I,
The connecting" supported by the ,moton means, as bolts 16, 16, are preferably passed entirely through the tank so as to be conveniently accessible, and a spacing member is provided between the side walls 17, 17 of the tank. Such spacing member may have the form'of a casting 18and may comprise4 a substantially ring-shaped portion 19 having an opening 20 therein to register with the intake opening 14 of the motor, and a pair of posts ory studs 21, 21 having bores 22, 22 to receive the bolts 16, 16. The member 18 is preferably of substantially the outline of the pipe connection llange or facetl 23 rovided on the motor casting, and the gas et 24,' which normally serves for making a. tight connection between the ordinary inlet pipe and the inlet 14 may be made use of for giving a tight connection between the .tank and the water intake. Means are pref-` erably provided for holding and maintaining the member 18 in place within the tank, and in the form shown the bores 22, 22 are enlarged at their ends for a short distance, as shown at 25, and the material of the tank walls 17 17 is forced or driven inwardly around the openings for the bolts 16, 16 to enter the enlargements 25 of the bores 22, and in this way the member 18 will be held and remain in its proper place even when lthe bolts 16, 16 are removed, as will be readexample, in the Ford type of engine the throttle operating mechanism passes beneath the water inlet opening, and with a tank adapted for use. with such engine, a passage, as 26, for the throttle control -device, may be provided through the tank, as, for example, by passing the tubing. 27 through properly provided openings in the tank and soldering or otherwise securing it in place therein. The water inlet of the tank is preferably located at the lower side thereof and-may beat vthe lower forward portion as at 28, a comparatively short water inlet neck, such as 29, bein preferably provided whicl may conveniently be the like, to the water outlet 13 of the radiator 1l. An air vent is preferably provided at the top of the tank to prevent air pocketlng when filling the. circulating system with water. A screw 30, which may be loosened by unscrew'ing somewhat to plermit air to passvout and tightened after lling to prevent leakage, may be used for this purpose, or various other It will be seen that a tank in .accordance with my invention is -of extremely simple construction, that it can 'be connected directly to the water inlet of -the motor and may be supported by the connecting means, requiring no exterior supporting device, and that no changes in the construction of the engine and `radiator are required, all that is necessary being simply to remove the-ordinary piping connection from the radiator outlet to the water inlet of the motor and yengines of the type illustrated, and
" 2. Anauxiliary tank for to replace same with the improved tank and` connections. By mea-ns of such tank the cooled water for the motor can be increased to a substantlal extent and a very con- `venient and serviceable device is provided,
as for use with an automobile when it is found that the motor is likely to overheat, or more especially where, asis frequently done, an automobile is converted into a truck or the like and the engine is subjected to an increased load and therefore requires additional cooling facilities and water supply.
The invention is, of course, applicable to engines having a water pump, as well as to enerally it will be understood that the invention 1s not limited to the construction shown for the pur osesof illustration, and that changes an modifications may be made within the scope of my claims without departing from my invention. 4
I claim:
1. The combination with a water cooled motor and radiator, of an auxiliary water tank directly connected to and supported by the motor casting and adapted to be interposed in the water circulation system be? tween the motor and the radiator with the water circulation outlet of the radiator leading into said tank and the waterl circulation inlet of the motor leading out of said tank.
types of vent may be used.
motors, means extendingentirely inlet of the motor,
' whereby water cooled Inocooled motors a apted to be directly con? nected to the `water inlet of the motor, the connecting means passing entirely throu h the tank, and a spacing member within t e tank for Vtaking the thrust of the connecting means.
4. In an auxiliary tank for water cooled motors, means extending entirely through the tank `for directly connecting it to the Water inlet of an internal combustion motor, Va spacing member within theV tank for taking the thruist of the connecting means, and a passage throu h said connecting means and the tank wa for `aitording communication between the interior of the tank and the water inlet of the motor.
5. In an auxiliary tank for water cooled through the tank for connecting same to the water a spacing member within the tank for taking the thrust of the connecting means, and means for securing the tank walls to the connecting member.
6. In an auxiliary water tank for water cooled motors, an internal bracket extending from wall torwall of the. tank, and means passing through .said bracket for securing said tank directly to the motor.
7. In an auxiliary water tank for water cooled motors, a bracket extending from wall to wall of the tank and comprising a .pair of posts and bores therein, and an intermediate openin for communicating with the water inlet, said lbores bein enlarged at their ends and the material of t e tank Walls extending into said enlarged portions,
the bracket is located and maintained 1n place, bolts extending through said bores and through the tank for securing the tank directly to the water inlet of the motor with the interior of the tank in communicationjwith said water inlet, and means .for connecting the tank at another point with the'water outlet of a radiator.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing,`
CHARLES J. DALLEY.
yI hereto set my hand, this 16th day of July,
