SAFETY DEVICE FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed June 12, 1918. Serial No. 239,543.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM V. TETERs,-a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Safety Devices for Railwayars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in safety devices for railway cars, and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character adapted to move the cars laterally of each other in case of a collision to prevent telescoping of the cars.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a pair of triangular sheet memers associated with each other and carried by the abutting ends of the cars adapted when the cars are moved in the direction of each other in case of a collision to cause said cars to move laterally, thus preventing the cars from telescoping together, thereby obviating frequent losses of life owing to the telescoping of cars during railway accidents. A further object of this invention is the provision of a railway safety device of the above stated character, which will be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:

illustrating the means of attaching the members to the cars.
Referring in detail. to the drawing, the numerals l and 2 illustrate railway cars that are connected together by couplings 3 of the usual construction, and which cars have disposed between the same spring actuated bumpers 4. The foregoing description re lates to a well known construction of a train of cars, or the method of connecting the same together, and to which my invention is applied. A substantially triangular shaped member 5 is secured to the under face of each platform of each car of the train, as
illustrated in Fig. 2, so that the inclined face 6 of one member will be disposed adjacent the inclined face 6 of the other member, whereby upon the cars moving in the direction of each other the inclination of the faces 6 of the members 5 will cause the cars to move laterally with relation to each other, thereby preventing telescoping of the cars.
The members 5 are identical in construction and reference to one specifically is thought suflicient for all. The member 5 consists of upper and lower plates 7 and 8 constructed from angle iron and which are connected in triangular shape as illustrated in Fig. 3 by edge plates 11 which have annular flanges 11 bolted or otherwise secured to the outer faces of said triangular shaped plates 7 and 8. The upper and lower plates 7 and 8 are reinforced by braces 12. The lips or flanges 10 provided by the plates 7 and 8 have secured thereto vertically disposed arms 13 which are secured to the under faces of the platforms of the cars 1 and 2 by means of bolts 14?.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A safety device for railway cars comprising triangular shaped members, lips formed upon said triangular shaped members, and braces secured to said lips and to the platforms of cars.
