To all whom t may concern:` j jBe it known-that I," CARL HENDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak j Park, in thel county fof Cook-,and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in" Gripper Devices, of which the following is aspeciflcation j The invention is an improvement upon the constructionv forming the subj ect matter of my co-pending application Serial No. 85,7 79 filed March 22, 1916.
I-Ieretofore it has been usual to provide gripper pads having a smooth `upper face andhcoperating` therewith, rigid grippers v havinga rugose Vface between which rough` face of the gripper finger and smooth face of theV pad the sheet of paper was gripped.
A disadvantage of this construction was that if there occurred anylateral movement ofthe gripper inger relative to the pad,
the paper had a tendency to follow. the
movement of the gripper and slip on the pad, destroying the accuracy of its register.
. A further objection was that where there was avariation in the thickness of the paper and not a corresponding adjustment to the throw of the gripper, the paper was mutilated and the gripped mechanism subjected to injury.
I overcome both Vof these objections by roughening the face of the pad instead of the gripper, and by making the gripper finger yielding instead of rigid, whereby the gripped sheet retains its position on the pad Y notwithstanding any slippage or inaccuracy of stroke of the gripper, and thegripper inger acts upon'they sheet with a soft elastic pressure instead of a harsh unaccommodating grip ofthe former construction.

Upon this shaft at proper intervals are mounted the supports 17 for the'blanket clamp 18 and the gripper pad 19, these supports being held in adjusted i positions by means of a clamping screw 20 as will be readily understood. The shaft 21 serves as a support for the gripper 22, mounted inthe usual manner to coperate with the gripper pad 19. v
The gripper pad 19, as shown, is an angular plate of aluminum or other suitable material and comprises a horizontal portion 23 having a rugose or roughened face 23a, and a vertical portion 24 arranged at substantially Vright angles thereto. The upper roughened face of the horizontal portionl 23 kof the pad forms a contact surface between which and the lower smooth face 22a of the gripper 22 the sheet is arranged to be gripped, vwhile the vertical portion 24 extends parallel to and vin Contact with the side of the gripper pad support 17 and is provided with a slot 25 for the accommodation of a set screw 26, the end of which is threaded into the `head of the gripper pad support 17.
