FASTENING- MECHANISM.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. i5, iam.
Application mea my 1, 191s. sel-iai No. 242,699.
-anism, of which the following description,
in connection with the accompanying draw'- ing's, is a specification, like characters on the drawings, representing like parts. Y,
This invention pertains to improvements in fastening mechanism, and more particularly, though not exclusively, to fastening rmechanism forsecuring a plurality of different elements together by Studs and sockets without the use of a long Stud. The invention is particularly usefulrin conneotion with the securing of automobile curtains to the body of a car, and is disclosed in this connection. rWhile the invention is of general application, it is particularly useful in connection'with stud and socket fasteners of the type adapted to be separated by tipping movement in one direction only.
In the drawings v. Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pre-u ferred form of my invention; and
Fig, 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. A In the preferred form of. my invention I have shown a stud 3 secured to the side 4: of an automobile, and having a head 5 presenting va neck 6 adapted to be engaged by any suitable jaw mechanism 7 carried in a casing 8 of a socket attached to a curtain 9. As before Stated, the Socket is preferably of that type which permits separation thereof fromv the stud 3 only by an outward pull on the socket below the aX-is of the stud 3. In the preferred form of socket, the
Casing 8 isl secu-red at theback of the curtain 9, and a clench-plate 10 on the front of the curtain 9 form-s .the front of the socket.
In the preferred form of my invention, I secure a second stud 11 t0 the plate 10 at a point preferably above the aperturerin the socket which vengages the stud 3 and mount on a second curtain 12 any suitable socket 13, preferably of the same general type as heretofore described as attached to the curtain 9.
The location of the stud 11 at a relatively high point on the socket by which it is carried, lenables me to separate the socket 13 from the stud 11 by an outward pull on the bottom portion of the curtain 12 without exerting any Substantial outward force on the bottom ofthe socket carried by the curtain 9.
I am, therefore, by my invention enabled to separate the socket 13 from its stud withoutl danger of separating'the socket carried by the curtain 9 from the stud 3. This is of markedadvantage vover that typeof fastener in ,which the stud l1 is mounted centrally von the front of its coperating socket, be-
cause, where the latter construction is used, an outward pull on the bottom of the curtain 12 is very -likely to separate both curtains from the body of the car, `while leaving the two curtains joined together.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of 'one embodiment of my inventiony'it will be understood that major changes involving omission, substitution, alteration and reversal of parts, and even changes in the mode of operation, may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, which is best defined in the following claims.
Claims:
1. Securing means for securing a plural.-
ity of objects together including a pair of character, one member of one pair being permanently secured to one member of the other pair at a point out of line therewith.
3. A fastening device for automobile curtains including a relatively short stud secured to the automobile body, a socket secured to an automobile curtain for engagement with said stud, a second relatively short stud carried by said socket at a point above the stud-engaging portion of said socket, and a second socket carried by a second curtain, for engagement with said second stud.
4. A fastening device for automobile curtains including a relatively short stud secured to the automobile body, a'socket se-V cured to an automobile curtain for engagement with said stud, a second relatively short stud carried .by said socket at a point'I above the stud-engaging portion of said socket, and a second socket carried 'by a seoond curtain, for-engagement with said second stud, said studs and sockets coperating to provide a three-side lock separable by relative tipping of said studs and sock- 10 ets in one direction only.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
