Be it known that I, ROBERT, MIEHLE, citi zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in thecounty of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mechanism for Adjusting Liftsof Paper upon Feed-Boards, of which the following is a full, clear, concise V and exact description. f 10,
' My invention relates to feed boards such as are employed in'connection with printing V presses, feeding machines, paper folding machines, etc.', and has for its object the provision of means for loadinggplaclng, ad usting and maintaining the lifts in desired posi- V tionsu'pon feed boards. In practising my invention I employ a tray beneath a lift and which tray, together with the lift thereon, is movable along the feed board toward and is to operate upon the sheets.
i In the preferred embodiment of the in vention the tray and the lift thereon are manually moved by the attendant. I- also desirably employ moving .Inechanism the operation of which is caused bythe attendant to move the tray and the lift thereon along the feed board. I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred embodiment thereof as employed in connection with a feed board of a printing press, though it is to be understoodthat my invention is not to be limited to association with printing presses. Further to guard the tray from sidewise motion as it is being moved longitudinally of the feed boardI provide wings 23 which are carried by the rod 17 and closely approach the feed board. Therear andlower portion of the new lift may, if desired, be clamped in relation to thetray in the manner hitherto described. If desired, another tray vmay be used, in some cases, in alternation w1th the first, or a plurality of trays with lifts thereon may be simultaneously coupled with thedrive chains 32. In order to promote the ease with which the new liftmaybe inserted beneath the tray I desirably slope the rear end 10 of the tray upwardly and renrwardly so as to afford a clearance between the rear endof the tray-and th feed board in which clearance the front end of the new lift may be initiallyreceived. The rod .17 carries rollers 28 that vreach partially across the space or clearance between the rear end-of the tray and the feed board, these rollers riding upon the top of the new lift as it isbeing inserted but not coming into engagement with the new lift until a certain n front portion thereof has passed by the rollers, The tray may carry rollers 28 that roll upon the feed board,
When it is desired to move the tray by movinginechanism I preferably employ'the moving smechanism illustrated which j is inclusive of a hand crank 29 at -the rearof the feedrboard and upon one side thereof, a
' hand crank 30 upon the other side of the feed 7 board and at the front end of the rear sec-" tion thereof, sprocket wheel'sf3l uponthe shafts 5, 5 and 6 and sprocket chains 32 passing about the sprocket wheels, therebeing thus preferably a sprocket chain upon each side of 'thefeed board, the traybeing located between the'drive chains 32 that are thus located not only besidethe feed board but also beside the tray. The upper stretches of the sprocket chainsare suitably coupled with the tray. I have illustrated holding dogs 10 carried by and beside the tray and which are engageab-lewith linksf'of the sprocket chains. The means for="movingthe tray are thus preferably located upon the sides of the tray. As illustrated, these holding dogs are continuations of. the arms'25, these arms beingrotatable'with respect to the rod 17 so that when the chains 23 are wound to pull the tray back, the tray will be uncoupled from the sprocket chains 32.

The turning of either hand crank 2901 30 will cause shafts 5, 5 and 6 to turn.. I also desirably employ step by step mechanism for moving the tray step by step. The step by step mechanism illustrated is foot operated and isinclusive of a ratchet wheel 33 fixed upon shaft 6, an actuating pawl 34 adapted to be adjusted into and out of operative relation with the ratchet wheel 33, and a spring 35 holding the pawl in or out of operatingposition. The spring 35 is carried upon an armj36 mounted to swing about the axis of the shaft 6. The arm 36 is con constitutes a part'o-f a pedal mechanism, the v lOWer end of this link being connected with a treadle 38. A 'sprifng39 presses upwardly upon the treadle to restore it when it is relieved of foot pressure. By alternate pressure upon this treadle and relief of such pressure the link 37 is reciproca-ted to oscillate the arm 36 to actuate the pawl 34 and when this pawl3at isin operativere-lation with the ratchet 33,'the sprocketchains 32 will bei'moved step by step until the tray is moved forwardly tojust the position debackwardly by means of the chains32' the pawl f3-lis moved to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 to free it from .the'

When the dogs 10 engage the teeth of sprockets 31 p the dogs are automatically pulled out of; engagement with the chains 32 by said sprocket teeth so that said chains cannot move the tray farther forwardly 'or backwardly.
