-The bed ci is of ordinary or conventional construction with a spring b constitutingthe bed bottom and c a mattress resting on the spring. i
My invention consists substantiallyin the particular construction o-f the bed bottom 'and yof the mattress, and in the combination thereof with means for the support of a bed pan so that the rinvalid may use the bed an without the necessityv of being lifted or shifted from one place to another. To this end, the spring b is provided with a cut out portion b1 of rectangular shape and arranged substantially in'v the center thereof. The mattress c is `also provided with a cut out portion c1 of similar shape but somewhat in the spring and extending from the inner or head end of the ropening I tothe rear end of the mattress.
The cut 1n the mattress extends thrcu the entire thiekness of. the 'same and orme latter.

This commode may be suitably sup-V fported by the bed bottom or loosely placed on which the` mattress under the bed to be in rangegwith the openings b1, c1( The same consists of a substantiallycylindrical receptacle openv on its topy pan of similar shape is suit-` and in whicha ably and removably supported. The pan is provided at its open end withan annular flange f1 which in circumference is so adpass through the openings b1,
c1. The pan may also be provided withvertical' ribs around its outer circumference,
which may slidably engage corresponding guide grooves made on the inner face ofthe commode, the pan and commode in height being so admeasured that when the pan f f of the mattress, lower ends will with said groovesof is lifted into the opening c1 the saidvvertical ribs at their remain in engagement the commode so that beingv released from own gravity, slide vertically back into its lowered posltlon.
In order to support the pan in position of use within the opening c1 of the mattress I provide a bifurcated member g whichwhen placed across the openings b1, c1 will rest with its ends on the parts of the mattress extending at the sides of the opening thereof and which member is ca p abie of enga "ng the pan belcw, the flange v' tas shawn in' ig..
