To all whom z'tmay concern .1
Be it known that I, ENRIQUE ABAnoA,'a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Juan, Porto Rico, have invented a new and Improved Support for Expanding Metal Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to avoid unequal expansion of metal articles when reheating the same; to avoid unequal stresses in articles of the character mentioned dui ing the re-heating thereof; and to equalize the internal stresses of expansion set up 1n articles While re-heating the same.
Drawings.
Figure 1 is an end view of a support of the character mentioned constructed and arranged 1n accordance wlth the present invention, said support being shown in conjunction with a fragment of a macerating roll for sugar mills;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of'the the fragment of the roll being removed.
Description.
Heretofore it has been the custom when mounting on driven shafts, heavy; metal rolls, to key or shape the shaft 'to form key members extended toward the cylindrical; contour thereof. Over the shaft a metal roll or other member is slipped having been .prepared with recesses or pockets corresponding with the keys or projections of the shaft.
In good practice, when the roll and shaft are in service, they are rigidly connected to avoid any chattering or vibrating. This has been accomplished by providinga bore in the roll, said bore being of a size to snugly fit the shaft that is to be .placed therein. The roll is then re-heated to expand the metal and to enlarge the bore suflicient to pass the keys or other projections on "the shaft, if the shaft be, provided withsuch.
If, on the other hand, the bore is slightly less than the shaft, it being intended to form what is known as a hug fit, the rollis ex panded until the shaft can be passed through the bore. This is usually accomplished by placing the roll or article to be expanded in a suitable chamber where heat is applied Specificationof Letters Patent.

to the said roll or sleeve. The heat is applied most conveniently toone side of the 7,1which may be suitably disposed in' a re 65' heating furnace or chamber. The base block 7 has recessesS and 9. Therecesses 9 form bearings for'trunnionsylO and 11. The re cesses 8 form housings LTOI' solid "supporting rolls 12, which in service extend under the roll or sleeve 13 when placed in the re-heatr ing furnace for expansion.-
Integrally connected with the trunnions 10 are worm wheels 14,- the teeth whereof engage the *threads of worms 15. As seen best in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the worm wheels lt'extend; beyond the ends Of the block .7, and the shaft 16 on which are'ear riedthe worms 15, is mountedin bearings formed in the sides of the brackets 17.
- The shaft '16 may be extended to any suit Q able distance and beyond the confining wall for heating the chamber. A handwheel 18 is mounted on the shaft for operating the same.
Itwin now be' observed that when the roll or slee've,as indicated bythe numeral 13 in t Fig. 1 of the drawings, is to be re-heated, it y is placed in the heating chamber upon the rolls 12. When-the heating process is inaugurated,an attendant rotates the shaft 16 and worms 15'mounted thereon bymeans'of.
the wheel 18. The roll or sleeve 13 is slowly rotated" or turned on its center, and in this manner, the heat which is applied to expand, the same is evenly distributed, throughout.
