FEEDERICK l PiYfi-ff i,
Egzeeifimten of Letters Patent.
Application fiicfl; i'ovembei 1, W17. fieriel No. 1.99,?3i3.
To (ZZZ who)! may (anew-12 Be it known Hint I, Fimonnwn iiiifiii iinim, a citizen of the United Si'nfiee of America, i'esiding at Tan-flown, in the count of Wcetcheeter and Shite of New York; have. invented certain new and nsefui improve inents-in Car-Roofs, of which the foliowing is a specification, reference being i ad there in to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to can roofs of the flexible type, and it is one of the objects of the invention to obtain a QGI'fiSiEHQiLh'Ji'). in
which the roofing; sheets may he riveted or otherwise rigidly attached to the cz-iiiine o1" roof frame, While at the same time permitting fi'eedoin of movement relative. to each other. The invention further vcomprises various specific features as herein after setfovth.
In the cimivinge:
Figui'el is e hflBSJB-YSE section. through the car roof;
Fig. 2 is a section on iine m zv Fig. 1%.;
Fig. 3 is en enhii'geci View oi e poiivion of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of *the cnr'iine.
A. are cai'lines, which as shown are of cinmnei section, with a veraieniiy extending we'h portion and top and bottom ihn'iges B and C These flanges are pi'ei'ei'ahiy nonparaiiei, the iowei' flange extending" horizontaliy ncross the car and the upper: flange conforming to the pitch of the moi. i are puriins which are 1n sections extemiing between cni'iines and attached therein by holh ing or otherwise securing to the inner flanges C as indicated oi) The ogiposiie end of each pnriin may be attached to the cei'iine by striking a portion 33 from i'he web to form a supporting; and aitin-innent bracket, secured to the puriin by ihe bolt G are roofing Sheets, which extend hei'sveen cal-lines, being rigidiysecnied by i seiriesioi rivets H or other securing means in line.
The rigid ntinchmenh between the sheet and the cai'iine is noi detrimentai, phoviding the sheet in otherwise so as to he caper hie of movement with the caiiine in any distoiiio'n o2- weaving of ihe roof frame. It is, hoivever, absohiteiy necessary to form a went-iv -pi-ooi connection hetwiwn mii cent sheer me further to :1 mi :5 nor said she intermediate, in eccompiioh ihe. ihe sheets are oewn refit iiiieeiiy upon the pniiin eeciiio the hitter are so in shioneci timii the free edge oi" iiie sheet is lower than fihe upper flange of the cal-line This free edge is then provided "with an upturned flange I adjacent ie the cariine, but preferably providing some cieeiiiince, While the opposite or riveted edge of the sheet is extended beyond. the cariine, and is turned down adjacentto the upstanding flange of the next shee''. As shown, the downtni'ned portion J is further providefiv with e hitcm iy-exten iing portion iii, which OVQiih-IS thencijacent sheet to form a better weubhei' seal. A siiii better WB21i1i1B1 eeai may he formed by providing The sheet with an upwaiwiiy exteiniing head L adj?- cent to the edge of the Henge K. which stops the water from running into the crevice be tween the hitereiiy-exien(iii1g portion K and the adjacent sheet. This bend L may he formed, as shown, oiii sepai'ziie piece riveted to the sheet or it may he formed in other ways.
With the consiiuction as described, in operection the weaving of the ear frame will produce iehiisive movemeni: of adjacent sheets, Whieh is permitted by i'he sliding of the free eiige of one sheet .henea-th the wenihei prooiing flange on the fixed edge of the adjacent sheet. The sheets are also free to slide upon their supporting pnrlins, which miter ni'e pi'eiei'zihiy formed of Wood, oiprovided with non-mctnliie bearing; sun faces on which. the sheets F094;, so as to avoid any ahraciing nciion.
The running-{ward 1%. mo he ieaihiy ntizn'zhed to this iype of roof by supporting iii-rickets N, which may h iigiaiiy secured by bolting oi iivetin io ne cnriine and the sheet i'iie eii iheieto.
claim :is my invention isx:
ihe free eth c of said sheet in a my roof. the eonihinaiion Wiih ii in {'i'eemnn oi movement.
plurality of earlines, of a roofing sheet extendm between carhnes, havinw one ed e I b u H b portlon thereof rigidly attached to one carline and the opposite edge portion flangedadjacent to another carline, and weatherproofing means for the flanged edge of said sheet.
4- In a car roof, the combination with a plurality of cal-lines, of a roofing sheet extending between carlines, havin one edge portion rigidly attached to the top of one carline and. the opposite edge portion arranged in a lower plane and provided with an upstanding flangeadjaoent to another carline. and a. downturned flange on the rigidly attached portion of the sheet for weather-proofing the upstanding flang of an' adjacent sheet. a
5. In a car roof, the combination with a plurality of carlines, of a roofing sheet extending between carlines, having one edge portion thereof rigidly attached tovthe top of one earline, the opposite dge extending into a lower planeand provided with an upstanding flange adjacent to another carline, the rigidly attached edge portion being; further provided with a downhirned flange embracing the upturned flange of an adjacent sheet, and having a laterally-extelnling foot flange overlying said ad acent sheet.
6. In a car root the combination with a plurality of car-lines, of a roofilng sheet extending between adjacent carlinos. one edge portion of said sheet being rigidly attached to the top of one cal-line and the opposite vrigi(Hy-attached end portion. of said sheet being further provided with a downturned portion embracing the upstanding'flange of an adjacent sheet and havinga laterally extending flange overlying said adjacent sheet, and thefree edge portion of said sheet having a bead 0r ridge adjacent to said over-- lying laterally-extending flange.
7. In a car roof, the combi ation with a plurality of carlines, of a rooting sheet extending between cal-lines, having one edge portion thereof rigidly attached to the top of one carline andlits opposite edge portion extending into a lower plane adjacent to another carline and provide'dwith an upstanding flange, a. downturned flange'on the rigidly-scoured edge portion for embracing the upstanding flange of an adjacent sheet, and weather-proofing the same, and a pin-[in section extending between carlines, fashioned to support the sheet with its opposite edge portions in different planes.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presenc of two witnesses.
