%/MM+M AT TOR/V5 Y5 HERMAN G. DOMAN, OF OSI-IKOSI-L- WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR T0 BANDEROB-GI'IASE COMPANY, OF OSI-IKOSH, WISCONSIN, A. CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
WASHING-MACHINE LEVER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN C. DoMAN, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Oshkosh, in the county of Oshkosh and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machine Levers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in washing machine levers for actuating washing machines,
In the ordinary hand operated washing machines the parts are actuated by either a crank or a lever.
In the former case the turning of a crank handle for any considerable time becomes very tiresome due to the large circle of movement of the handle, and in the latter case in the use of a lever it is impossible to start movement of the parts by the lever alone in the event that the parts are in what is commonly termed a dead center position.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and provide a lever means for actuating the parts which can be started from any position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a washing machine lever which may be easily attached or detached fromthe parts of the washing machine in a very simple manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a washing machine lever which is of simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved washing machine lever and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a washing machine provided with the improved actuating lever; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view thereof, a portion of the lever also being shown in section.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 5 indicates the tub or receptacle which is provided with the usual cover portion 6. An
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Apr. 8, 1919. Application filed August 15, 1917. Serial No. 186,407.
angular bracket 7 mounted on the top and I side portions of the tub is provided with an upper horizontal bearing 8 through which extends a driving shaft section 9. A bracket 10 is also mounted on the cover portion 6 and is provided with a horizontal bearing 11 to receive a shaft section 12 which is in alinement with the shaft section 9 and is connected thereto by a clutch 13. The
-clutch' is actuated by a push member 14 for end portion of the shaft section 9 has a sprocket chain connection 20 with a sprocket wheel 21 journaled on a stud shaft 22 below the shaft section 9 and projecting outwardly from the lower portion of the bracket 7. The sprocket wheel 21 is connected to and rotates the fly wheel 23 also j ournaled on the stud shaft.
A wheel or disk 24: mounted on and pinned to the outer end of the shaft section 9 is provided with a wrist pin 25 and upon said wrist pin an actuating lever 26 is medially pivoted. The lower end portion of the lever is provided with an elongated slot 27 through which the outer end portion of the stud shaft 22 projects and forms a fulcrum for the lever.
A washer 28 mounted on the stud shaft 22 and bearing against the outer face of the lever, and a cotter pin 29 extending through the shaft 22 serve to removably hold the lever on the shaft and permits its reciproca- 'tion thereon. The medial portion of the le- .the position shown in Fig. 1, a slight downward or upward push on the lever will start the rotation of the parts. If the construction was changed by forming the slotin the medial portion of the lever and the fulcrum at the lower'end it would be impossible to a start rotation of the parts when in the position shown in Fig. 1 or in a position diametricallyopposite to the position shown.
9 What I claim as my invention is:
1. Ina washing machine having a horizontally extending shaft provided with a rotary member having a wrist pin projecting therefrom, said machine also having a stud shaft below the horizontal shaft and a fly wheel journaled on the stud shaft and driven from the horizontal shaft, of a lever medially j ournaled on the wrist pin and having an elongated slot in its lower end portion through which the stud shaft extends, the
upper end portion of the handle of the lever.
2. In a washing machine having a horizontally extending shaft provided with a rotary member, said rotary member having a wrist pin projecting ecoentrically therefrom, said machine also having a horizontally extending stud shaft and a fly wheel journaled lever forming the V thereon which is driven from the first mentioned shaft, of a lever medially journaled on the wrist pin and having an elongated slot in one of its end portions through which the stud shaft extends, the other end portion of the lever forming the handle of the lever.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
HERMAN O. DOMAN.
