ROAD-GRADING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application filed October 12, 1918. Serial No. 257,828.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. yBRUSE- wrrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State o-f Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road- Grading Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to road grading machines and has special reference to a grader for common high-ways or dirt roads.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a grader of this character having improved means for lmanipulating the scraper -blades thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the peculiar construction will appear in the further description of the invention. Figure 1, is a top plan view of one of the improved graders,
Fig. 2, is a front elevation of one of the laterally operativev scraper blade supports, Fig. 3, is an outer end elevation of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4, is a side elevationof one of the scraper blade draft hooks,
Fig. 5, is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. lV looking rearwardly, p n
Fig. 6, is a broken side elevation of one of the laterally adjustingv rods ofthe wheeled Supports, l
Fig. "7, is a similar elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 6, and y v Fig. 8, is a transverse sectional View through one of the laterally extendible bars,
showing one form of manually manipulating l same.
1 1 represents the side frames of the chassis which is of the usual rectangular form carried upon the fiXed rear aXle 2 and Y the front pivotally mounted aXle 3, this front aXle having the usual pivotal attachment not shown, as it forms no pant of my present invention. v
The rear axle 2 is carried upon suitable wheels 4 4 and the front aXle 3 is carried on similar wheels 5 5. v
I prefer to make the side frames 1 1 of box girder constructionv and have illustrated the front end 'carried upon a suitable bolster 65. Transverse the Yfront end of the chassis is a suitable cross piece 7 in each end of which is mounted a vertically disposed shaft 8, carrying upon its upper end a suitable hand wheel 9 for the manual manipulating thereof. The lower end of each shaft 8 is journaled within the eXtreme end of the bolster 6 and intermediate of which and 'the cross piece 7, the shaft 8 is designed to carry one of the draft lines 10, there being two of such draft lines, one upon either side of the machine and upon which suitable tension is brought by rotation of its respective shaft 8. The opposite end of each draft line 10 is attached to its respective scraper blade 1l by a suitable arched bar 12.
By this arrangement the major portion of the longitudinal stress upon the scraper blades is applied directly lto the forward corners of the chassis.
Within suitable transverse guides upon i toward one side of the machine and the otherk toward the opposite side thereof.
At the rear of the chassis are identical bars 18 and 19 reciprocally supported in suitable guides. indicated at 20, 21, and 22. These bar s, their supports and cooperative parts are all identical and I shall proceed to describe but one thereof which is deemed suicient for comprehensive understanding of the device, though the specific const-rucrtion does not form part of the invention uponwhich patent protection is desired.
Considering the bar 16 as illustrated in Fig. 2; A
This bar pivotally carries upon its outermost end the upwardly arched scraper blade supporting arm 23, which is attached to the outer conveX surface ofthe blade 11 in any desired manner or, as illustrated at 24-24. The arm 23 is attached by suitable link connection 25 to the lower end of an upright rectangular shaped frame which comprises the ends 26and 27 and the side pieces 28 and 29, the inner edge of the latter having cogs 30 formed therein which provide a suitable tably carried in the head frame k31 of the Vsupporting standard. This standard comprises also the parallel uprights 32-32 and the foot frame 33. The foot frame is pivotally mounted as at 34. upon a short bold ster 35 havingl depending parallel arms 36 intermediate of which the supporting wheel 37 is journaled as at 38.
The wheel 437 and bolster 35 pivotally supports the mechanism and are .adjustable to any pivotal position by a suitable arrangement of levers indicated at 39, 46,41, and 42. As a means for adjusting the rod 42 longitudinally I have illustrated in Figs. 6 and-7 a hand lever connection of simple construction, however this specialform may or may not be used as desired. Two rods 43-43 are pivotally attached as at 44 to the head fra-me 31, convergingfinwardly toward the chassis and are attached toa cross head 45 rigidly carried upon the end of the bar 16 by a suitable bracket indicated at 46.
The spur gear 47 which :meshes with the rack 29 is 'carried upon a short shaft 48 journaled within the head frame 31 and is manually rotatable from the chassis by a square section of shaft 49 being journaled transverse the chassis and operated in either directionby a suitable lever with pawl and ratchet combination indicated aft 50. The end of this shaft is connected at its outer end by a universal joint 51 to the inclined shaft '52 which at its upper end is attached to the shaft 48 by a similar universal joint indicated at 53.
- In this manner the scraper blade arms 23 may be raised or lowered by an operator on the machine and the supporting wheel may be turnedv to traverse transverse the bed of the road being graded, or longitudinally thereof as desired,-by the lever attachment before described. Two brace rods 54v similarj to rods 43 are piv'otally attached as at 55 to the frame 33 and at their opposite ends as at 56 to the end of the bar 16, these being for the purpose of sustaining the base of the support laterally.
By this arrangement it is evident that the scraper blades may be raised or lowered in respect to their supporting wheels 37 and cooperative frames, or in other words the cut of the blades accurately gaged. f f
Approximately midway the ends of the chassis I have illustrated one cenvenient embodiment of means for raising and lowering thel scraper blades together with their wheel ksupports bodily. .This means comprises a transverse beam 57 being arched upwardly at its ends as at 58', there being a suitable sheave journaled within the extreme end of each arched portion as at 59. Adjacent each arched portion of the beam 57 is pivotally mounted a hand lever 60 having attached thereto a draft line 61 as at 62, which draft line passes over its respective sheave in the end of the beam and leads to its respective grading blade`11 to which it is attached in any convenient manner, as for yexample by the hook 63 engagin the strap 64 rigidly fixed to the blade. djacent the center of either one or both of the blades may be quickly raised or lowered and which act will carry ,with the blades all their previously described mechanisms.
One convenient means forreciprocally operatin the laterally extendible bars 16, 17.v 18, an y19 and thus regulating the width of the scraper, is illustrated in Fig. S.` f
This arrangement consists of a short shaft 65 journaled transverse the under side of the guides which in this view are those designated as 13 and 14.
Upon the shaft is fixed a spur gear 66 which meshes with the rack 67 formed on the underside of thebar 16, and a similar gear 68 is fixed to the shaft adjacent its outer end. A hand lever 69 is loosely mounted upon the end of the shaft in close proximity to the gear 68 having ahand controlled'reciprocal catch rod 70 which coperatively engages with the gear 68 and by which the shaft 65 may be intermittently rotated in either di- .rection by the operator.
It is apparent from the foregoing that this.-
novel combination permits of the construction of a very large, light and strong machine, the parts of which are exceedingly easy of manual manipulation and the blades having independently operative supporting means in the wheels 37 and their accompanying` frame structures permits Vof the lightest form possible of chassis.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as'new and/desire to secure by LettersfPatent is f Y 1. The combination with a road grader of the v character described comprising a chassis and grading` blades carried upon either side of the chassis of a single wheeled support intermediate of` eachl end of each blade and the chassis and independently operative means whereby the blades may be adjusted vertically upon the intermediate supports.
2. The combination with a road grader of the character described comprising a chassis and grading blades earried'upon either side thereof, of independently laterally adjustable wheeled supports intermediate of each end of each of the blades and the chassis and independently operative means whereby the blades may be adjusted vertically upon the intermediate supports.
3. The combination with .a road grader comprising a chassis having a grading blade upon each side thereof, of an independently laterally adjustable. support carried by the chassis for each end of each blade, a ground engagingl wheel under each support and means w ereby said wheels may be turned and positively held at any angle desired for the purpose described. f
4. The combination with a road grader comprising a chassis having a grading blade upon each side thereof, of supporting means engaging vthe road intermediate of both ends of both blade and the chassis, said supporting means being independently operative both laterally, in respect to the vehicle, and vertically.
5. The combination with a road grader comprising a chassis having a grading blade upon either side thereof, of laterally movable ground engagin supports intermediate of both ends of thev lades and the chassis, means whereby the blades may be adjusted vertically upon their intermediate supports and means whereby the blades together with their intermediate supports may be "raised or lowered separately or simultaneously.
6. The combination with a roadgr-ader comprising a chassis, having a ading blade upon either side thereof and b ade carrying arms pivotally carried by the chassis, of laterally movable wheeled supports at either end of the chassis, means upon each support for adjustably holding one of the blade-carrying arms, means for raising and lowering the arms upon the support and means for operating the supports substantially as described.
7. The combination with a road grader comprising va chassis having a grading blade upon either side thereof and blade-carrying arms pivotally carried by the chassis, of laterally movable wheeled supports at either end of the chassis, means upon each support for adjustably holding one of the blade-carrying arms, means for raising and lowering the arms upon the support, means for operating the supports laterally inrespect to the chassis, and independent means for raising or lowering the blades and their supports simultaneously.
In testimony whereof I hereunto allx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
