Be it known that' I, GIDEON ANDERSON, a.
subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of the city of New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tilting Tables, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to an improved tilting table that may b-e used for various purposes, medical or otherwise, but which is intended primarily for use in the home as a Support upon which a person may rest at certain angles of inclination for the purpose of exercising within limits the vascular system, for curative or health purposes; this being accomplished by having` the table lupon which the user rests tilted at a series of prescribed angles below the horizontal.
In order that the table may be tilted to a desired angle and adjustably maintained in that position, novel means to such end are provided; and in order that the table when not in use as a health promoting device. may have the appearance of an ordinary couch, I have constructed the same in a manner to permit of all the table tilting and supporting mechanism being conveniently shifted to aposition out of sight when not in use. Other features and advantages of the table will be referred to in the detailed description of theinvention which follows:
Referring now tothe accompanying drawings forming part of the specification- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of a tilting table embodying my invention, with the table shown in raised or Open position in full lines and in lowered or closed position in dotted lines.

As before stated, when the device is not in use as a tilting table, it is adapted to be closed up in such way as to take on the appearance of an ordinary couch. In order to provide for this, the device is made with an open rectangular frame l having corner supporting legs 2-2 and 3-3, those at the head of the frame being hinged thereto for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
Supported at the top of this frame is a table 1l, which, when the device is closed up for use as a couch, rests directly upon the frame, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and serves as a couch top, the same preferably being an upholstered structure as shown in Figs. l andV 6.
Att-ached to the under side of the frame l is a pair of rockers, 5 and 6, which are movable from a closed position at the under side of the device as shown in Fig. 2, assumed when the device is being used as a couch, to
adjacent to the head end of the table, and a pair of bracket arms 9, 9, adjacent to the foot end of the table; the links S being pivoted at their opposite ends to the frame and table at 10 and 11, respectively, and the depending bracket arms 9 being rigidly attached to the table and having pms 12 at their lower ends engaging in slotted guide plates 13, 13, attached to the opposite inner sides of the frame 1. lrVith these connections between the table and the frame, when the user lifts the table, the links 8 swing on their pivots 10, causing the table to move in a direction upwardly and longitudinally of the frame to a position overhanging the head end of the latter as shown. At the same time the pins 12 on the bracket arms 9 move upwardly in the inclined slots of the plates 13, `13-whereby to lift the lower or foot end ofthe table-until they reach the upper ends of the same and there limit the further raising of the table. These slots terminate at their upper ends in horizontally arranged portions 1li in order to provide a support for the table at itslower end. When the table 4t is thus lifted, an open space is .left between its lower end and the adjacent end of the frame which is adapted to be filled in by a supplemental foot section 15. This foot section 15, which is comparatively short-,is adapted when not in use to rest upon a suitable support 16 (see Fig. 2) beneath the main table 4. As shown, this is connected with the frame by means of a pair of links 17, 17, which at one end pivo-tally connect with the table section at 18, and at their opposite or lower ends have a sliding connection through headed pins 19 with horizontally arranged slotted channel irons 20, 20, attached to the opposite sides of the frame 1. In order to shift this foot section 15 to its open or raised position following the raising of the table 4las described, its rear end is raised above the frame 1 and then drawn backwardly until the links 17 reach the rear end of the slots in the channel irons 20, at which time a continued pull will cause the links to swing upwardly and raise the front end of the foot section to a position flush with the adjacent end of the table 4:, where it is held in positionby two pairs of attached brackets 21 and 22, the brackets 21 engaging the adj aeent end of the table 4 and the brackets 22 engaging a vertical wall 23 of the frame 1, as shown in Fig. 1.
In lorder that the rockers 5 and 6 may be lowered to their operative supporting position when the table l is raised and be swung up to their closed or inoperative position when the table is lowered, I have provided a cable connectiondoetween the same, indicated at 25, which passes about two pulleys 26, 26, attached to the opposite sides of the table adjacent the rear end thereof, thence over vtwo pulleys 27, 27, carried by` stationary bracket arms 2S, 2S, projecting inwardly `from opposite sides of the frame 1, and from thence to the rockers, to which the opposite ends of the cable are connected at 29 and 30, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6. The length of this cable 25 is such that when the table is in its lowered or closed position, at which time the pulleys 26 thereon are positioned adjacent the rear end of the frame 1, the rockers will be held in their raised or closed position, as shown by full lines in Fig. 2 and by dotted lines in Fig. 6, and when thel table is raised, its consequent longitudinal movement shifts the pulleys 26 toward the pulleys 27 and thereby permits the lowering of the roc-kers to their supporting position. This cpe-ration will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings. In orde-r that the rockers, when raised and lowered as described, may'move in succession so as to avoid fouling one with the other, one of them is weighted whereby it will be first to lower and the last to raise. Any weighting means may be employed, but as here shown I have attached to one of the rockers the table tilting mechanism to be hereinafter referred to.
. As a means to lock the rockers in their lowered or operative position, I haveprovided a pair of latching devices, each of which lcomprises a latch 31 pivoted to a cross-bar 32 carried by the frame 1 and having a flange 83 adapted to engage aholding clip 3l attached to the rockers. In order to have these latch devices automatically operated, each is connected through a pivoted link 35 with the bracket arms 9 on the table 4, whereby. when the table is raised, the latch devices will be swung downwardly into latching position immediately following the lowering of the rockers, as shown by full lines in Fig. 1, and upon the 'lowering of the table will be drawn up and released from latching position, as shownby dotted lines in F ig. 1. l
IVhen the device has been adjusted for use as a tilting table by the raising of the table and the lowering of the rockers, the supporting legs 2 at the head of the device are adapted to be then raised from the loor so as to let the device rest on the rockers, whereby to permit of the device being tilted to a desired angle. These legs 2, which are suitable hinged to the frame 1 as before described, may be swung to an inoperative position by any suitable means. In the present case, they are carried by a cross-head 36 to which is connected a spring 37 that is normally operative to swing the legs to their raised position, the said legs being held to their lowered position and against the pull of said spring by a latch device 38 (see Figs. 2 and 11) which is pivoted to the cross-head at 38 and adapted to engage a latch pin 39 attached to the frame 1. With this construction, when it is desired to swing the legs to their inoperative position, the user simply releases the latch lever 38 from the latch pin 39, whereupon the legs will be automatically swung upward under the action of the spring 37, as shown in Fig. 1.
I will next describe the means for tilting the table to a desired angle of inclination and holding it in its adjusted position.
` It will be understood of course, in view of the intended home use of the device, that it is desirable that the device should be capable of being readily tilted to any desired angle by the user when in a reclining position on the table. Means to this end have therefore been provided. These means comprise a guide member rigidly attached to the rocker frame 5 and having an arcuate slot 41 following generally the curvature of the supporting rocker, a runner 42 having at one end a roller 43 for resting upon the Hoor and adjacent its opposite end having a plurality of rollers 44 engaging the member 40 within the slot 41 therein, and means including a pair of ratchet pawls 45 and 46 engaging ratchet teeth 47 on the upper curved edge of the runner 42 for efecting a longitudinal movement of the runner relative to the guide member 40 as permitted by the travel of the rollers 44 in the slot 41. The supporting rockers 5 and 6 are so positioned relative to the table 4 that the weight of the latter will bear upon the run ner 42 when the front legs 2 are swung up to their inoperative position, as shown 1n Fig. 1. Thus it will be understood that if the runner is permitted to shift forwardly, that is, toward the left as viewed in Fig. 1, the head end of the-table will be permitted to lower through the coaction of the guide slot 41 with the rollers 44, and if the runner is shifted in the opposite direction the said head end of the table will be caused to rise. Such movement of the runner relative to the guide member 40 is controlled by the ratchet pawls 45 and 46 by means to be presently described.
In order to provide a firm connection between the guide member 40 and associated runner 42, said guide member is formed of two plates 40, 40', secured together .in spaced relation, between which the runner extends and operates, as most clearly shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, wherein the runner at its rear end is also shown as being formed of two plates secured together in spaced relation and with the roller 43 mounted between them.
The ratchet pawl 45 hereinbefore referred to is pivoted to the member 40 at 50, and is yieldingly held by a connecting spring 51 ina normal position with its free end in engagement with one ofthe teeth 47 on the I runner 4 2, whereby the table. is heldagainst downward tilting movement. This pawl 45 therefore acts as a retaining pawl. The other pawl 46 acts as an operating pawl and is pivoted to an arm 52 rigidly attached to a rock shaft 53 which is provided with an operating lever 54, the said shaft being mounted in the member 40 at one side of the rocker 5 and in a bracket arm 55 depending from the frame 1 at the opposite side of said rocker, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 6. lhen the head end of the table is to be tilted downward, it is necessary to release the retaining pawl from its engagement with the teeth of the runner in order to permit of such movement, and a consequent outward movement of the runner is caused by the walls of the arcuate slot 41 in the guide member 40 acting against the rollers 44 on the runner, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 8. This releasing of the retaining pawl is accomplished at follows: Preliminary to the releasing operation, a tongue is projected, by means to be hereinafter described, into a position between the top of the pawl 46 and a spring 61 attached to the under side of the pawl 45, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7, as a means to place said spring under tension. At this time the pawls will be in the position shown in Fig. 7 with the retaining pawl 45 in holding engagement with a tooth on the runner. Thereafter, when the user wishes to tilt the head of the table downwardly, he will pull the operating lever 54 slightly backward, or in a direct-ion toward the head of the table, and thereby cause the operating pawl 4G to force the runner forward just suiiiciently to release the retaining pawl from engagement with its cooperating tooth and permit the same being raised under the action of the spring 61 to a position above said tooth, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 9, the tension of the spring 61 being sufficient to overcome that of the upper spring 51 in effecting this release of the pawl. After the pawl 45 is thus released, the table will lower under the weight of the u'ser and force the runner outward, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 8, until the retaining pawl engages the succeeding tooth of the ruimer, the lowering of the pawl into position for engagement with such succeeding tooth being permitted by reason of the dropping of the tongue 60 from its position of tensioning engagement with the spring 61, which is permitted by the withdrawal of the operating pawl 46 from thereunder, as shown in Fig. 8. The
tongue 60, however, is held in its raised' spring-tensioning position by the pawl 45 suiiieiently long after the initial releasing of the retaining pawl from the engaging ratchet tooth-shown by dotted lines in Fig. Q-to permit of the top of the tooth passing beneath the toe of saidkv pawl. Unlessthe toe of the retaining pawl was so supported until the top of the tooth had passed thereunder, it would of course drop back into its original position of engagement with the tooth and so prevent outward movement of the runner.
The tongue 60 as here shown is a lateral extension of a member 63 pivoted at 64 to a plate 65 which is pivotally mounted on the inner side of the guide member 40, by a pivot pin 66, the said tongue being adapted to extend through an opening in the mem ber 40 to its position for coperating with the spring 61 and being limited in its downward movement so as not to engage with the runner teeth 47 by a stop pin 67 on the plate 65 engaging the lower edge of the pivoted member 63.
During the lowering of the table as per-- mitted by the shifting of the retaining pawl from one ratchet tooth to the succeeding one as just described, the operatingpawl 46 is carried backward by the engaging ratchet tooth of the shifting runner until the parts are locked by the engagement of the retaining` pawl with the succeeding ratchet tooth. When the operating pawl is thus moved backward, a rearwardly projecting heel portion 68 thereon is brought into engagement with a downwardly-pressing spring arm 69. Thereafter, if a further lowering of the head end of the table is desired, the user will push forward on the lever 54 to move the pawl 46 backward slightly from its engaging ratchet tooth, whereupon the pawl will be rocked on its pivot under the'action of the spring 69 to raise the toe end thereof upwardly from its tooth engaging position, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 8. This will permit the pawl 46 to be again advanced by the operating lever to a position beneath the tongue 60, as shown in Figs. 7 and 9, and there raise said tongue to tension the spring 61 and permit of another releasing of the lretaining pawl, in the manner just described. This releasing operation may of course be repeated untilthe table has been tilted downwardly to the desired angle The 'arm 69 for engaging with the heel of the pawl 46 as just described, is connected with the member 40, at 70, and is yielding in order that it may be free to move upwardly when engaged by the heel of said pawl, under the'conditions to be hereinafter described, ywithout producing any movement of the pawl. When it is desired to have said arm 69 act to rock the pawl to releasing position as just described, however, a tongue 71 on the pivoted member 65 is adapted to be projected laterally into a position of engagement with the upper edge of the arm 69, as shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9, and hold the same stationary whereby it will function in coperation with the heel of the pawl in the manner described.
In order to elevate the head end of thev table from its lowered position, the pivoted member 65 is first operated to withdraw the tongues 60 and 7l from their positions for coperation with the pawls 45 and 46 as shown in Fig. 4. This leaves the pawls free gagement with the successive ratchet teeth in usual manner. In this way thetable may be tilted from the lowered position shown in Fig. 8 to the raised position shown in Figs. l and 3.
It will be understood from'the foregoing that when the table is to be tilted downwardly, the tongues 60 and 71 should bev projected forwardly into operative position for coperation with the pawls 45 and 46, and that when the table is to be tilted upwardly, the said tongues should be withdrawn from their said position for coperation with the pawls'. In order that this may be conveniently done by the user without" change of his reclining position on the table, l have provided a means that may be operated from the handle end of the operating lever for rocking the pivoted member 65 sol as to shift the supported tongues to and from. their operative position. These means comprise a pin 75 slidably mounted in a bore of the rock shaft 53 with one end proj ecting beyond thela ter at its inner end for engagement with the upper end of the pivoted tongue-carrying member 65, and its opposite end extending into engagement with lan inclined or wedge surface 76 at the lower end of a rod 77, which is supported for vertical movement within the operating lever 54, the latter beinO' made tubulary for this purpose. Said rod ,77 at its upper end is pivotally connected to a small lever 78, which is pivoted to the handle end of the lever 54, at 79, and is formed with its operating end extending upwardly through an opening in said handle end for operating between 'two stops 81 and 82 thereon, as shown in Fig. 12. 1V hen the lever 78 is in the full line position shown in Fig. 12, the rod 77 will be raised with its lower end above the pin 75, as shown in Fig. 6, whereby the pivoted member 65 may be shifted by a spring, such as 83, to its position with the tongues 60 and 7l withdrawn to their inoperative positions, as shown in Fig. 4. By swinging said lever 78 over into engagement with the opposite stop 82, as shown b dotted lines in Fig. 12, the rod' 71 will thereby be lowered and the wedge at its lower end forced downward into engagement with the pin 75 to' move the latter inwardly and thereby rock the pivoted member 65 in a direction to project the tongues 60 and 7l to their operative positions, as and for the purpose described. It will thus be seen that the user has only to shift the small lever 78 at the handle end of the operating lever 54 to adapt the tilting mechanism for either raising or lowering the head end of the table 4.
IVhen the user of the device lies 0n the table 4' on his back, the operating lever 54 should be in the upright or Vertical position shown in Figs. 1 and 6 for convenient manipulation by the user: In some uses of the device, however, it is necessary for the user to lie on the table face downward. In such cases, the operating lever, for convenient manipulation, should be in a substantially horizontal position. To provide for such change in positions of the lever, the latter is loosely mounted on the end of the rock shaft 53 and has an adjustable connection with a notched collar keyed fast to said rock shaft, as shownin Fig. 13. This connection is eected by means of a spring latch 89, mounted in a housing 90, fixed to the lever 54 at its lower end (see Figs. 4 and G), which latch engages either one of a plurality of notches 91, in the collar 88, according to the position desired for the lever. The collar 88 is shown asbeing formed with a hub 92, to which is rigidly attached an arm 93, having two stop surfaces 94, 94, for engaging with a stationary pin 95, on the frame, to limit the operating throw of the lever 54 and also hold the latter within limits to its adjusted positions.
What I claim is v l. In a device of the character described, a frame, a table movable thereon. means comprising a rocker for supporting the table in a tiltable position, said rocker being laterally adjustable to and from an operative supporting position, latching means inde-- pendent of the rocker for locking said rocker to its operative position, and means operated upon themovement of the table relative to the frame to shift said latching means to and from its locking position.
2. In a device of the character described, a frame, a table vertically movable relative thereto, means comprising va rocker for supporting the table in a tiltable position, said rocker being adjustable to and from an operative supporting position, latching means for locking the rocker toits operative position. and connections between the table and latching means automatically operative upon the raising and lowering of the table to shift the latching means to and from its locking position.
3. Ijn a device of the character described, a frame, a table movable thereon, means comprising a rocker for supporting the table in a tiltable position, said rocker being pivoted to the frame for movement to and from its operative supporting position, and a connection between the table and rocker automatically operative upon the shifting of the table relative to the frame to cause a shifting of the rocker to and from its operative supporting position.
4. In a device of the character described, a frame, a table supported by said frame and being vertically movable relative thereto, means comprising a pair of rockers for ,supporting the table in a tiltable position, said rockers being pivoted to the frame for movement to and from their operative supporting positions, and a connection between the table and rockers automatically operative upon the raising and lowering of the table to cause a shifting of the rockers to and from their operative supporting positions.
5. In a device of the character described, a frame, a table supported by said frame and being movable longitudinally thereof,
' means comprising a pair of rockers for supporting the table in a tiltable position, said rockers being pivoted to the frame for movement from a lowered supporting position to a raised closed position beneath the frame, and a flexible connection between the table and the rockers operative to raise the rockers to their closed position upon the movement of the table in one direction and to permit the lowering of the rockersto operative supporting position upon the movement of the table in the opposite direction.
` 6. In a device of the character described, a frame, a table supported by said frame and being movable longitudinally thereof, means comprising akpair of rockers for supporting the table in a tiltable position, said rockers being pivoted to the frame for swinging movement in a direction transversely of the frame to and from their operative supporting 4positions and one of the rockers being heavier than the other, and a cable connected at its opposite ends with the rockers and at an intermediate point4 having a sliding connection `with the table, whereby. upon the movement of thetable longitudinally in one direction the rockers will be successively `raised to their inoperative positions and upon` the movement of the table in the opposite direction the rockers will be successively lowered to their operative positions.
7. In a device of the character described, a frame, a table supported by said frame and being movable longitudinally thereof, means comprising a pair of rockers for supporting the table in a tiltable position, said rockers being pivoted to the frame for swinging movement in a direction transfes versely of: theft-rame to and from their operative supporting positions and one of the rockers being 'heavier than the other, a pulley carried by the table, and a cable connected at its opposite ends with the rockers and at an intermediate point passing over 'said pulley on the table, whereby, upon the movement of the table longitudinally in one direction the rockers will be successively raised to their inoperative positions and upon the movement of the table in the opposite direction the rockers will be successively lowered to their operative. positions.
8. In a device 'of the character described, a frame, a table supported by said frame and being movable relative thereto, means coinprising a pair 'of rockers for supporting the table in a tiltable position, said rockers being connected to the frame for movement from a lowered supporting position to a raised closed position beneath the frame, a Y flexible connection 'between the table and the rockers operative 'to raise the rockers to their closed positions upon the movement of the table in one direction and to permit the lowering of the rockers to their operative supporting positions upon the movement of the table in the opposite direct'ion, latching means for locking the rockers in their lowered'operative positions, and

In a device of the character described, a frame, a table supported'by'said frame and being movable relative thereto, means comprising av pair of rockers lfor supporting the table in a tiltable position, said rockers being connected to the frame for movement from a lowered supporting position to a raised closed position beneath the frame, latfhing means for locking the roc-kers to their lowered supporting position, and connections between tlie table and the rockers and latching means, whereby, upon the movement of the table in one direction, the rockers will be lowered to supporting posi- -tion and then latched in such position, and upon the movement of the table in the opposite direction the latcliing means will release I and means for holding the table in such posi tion relative to the frame comprising a supplemental table section.

a frame having means for supporting it in a table, and supporting means therefor comH prising two floor-engaging members one of which is slidably adjustable on the floor relative to the other in a. direction to permit tilting of the table, operating means for controlling the shifting of the adjustable member relative to the other, and locking means for holding said adjustable member stationary relative to the other member at different points in its range of adjustment.

In a device of the character described, a table, supportingvmeans therefor comprising two floor members one of which is slidably adjustable on the floor relative to the other in a direction to permit downward tilting of the adjacent end of the table under the action of gravity, operating means for controlling the shifting of said adjustable member, and locking means for holding said adjustable member stationary relative to the other member at different points in its range of adjustment.

In a device of the character described, a table, supporting means therefor comprising two floor members one of which is slidably adjustable on the Hoor relative to the other in a direction to permit downward tilting of the adjacent end of the table under the action of gravity, operating means for shifting said adjustable member in a direction to raise the adjacent end of the table, and locking means for holding said adjustable member stationary relative to the other member at different points in its range of adjustment.

In a device of the character described, a table, supporting means therefor comprising two floor members one of which is slidably adjustable on the loor relative to the other in a direction to permit downward tilting of the adjacent end of the table under the vaction of gravity, operating means including a rack and pawl for controlling the shifting of said adjustable member, and locking means for holding said adjustable member stationary relative to the other member at different points in its range of adjustment.

In a device of the character described, a table, supporting means therefor comprising two floor members one of which is adjustable relative to the other in a direction to permit downward tilting of the adjacent end of the table under the action of gravity, and a guide member carried by the table coacting with said adjustable floor member for controlling the tilting movement of the table.

In a device of the character described, a table, supporting means therefor comprising two floor members one of which is adjustable relative to the other in a direction to permit downward tilting of the adjacent end of the table under the action of gravity, a guide member carried by the table co-acting with said adjustable floor member for controlling the tilting movement of the table, and means for controlling the relative movement between said guide member and the coacting floor member.

In device of the character described, a table, supporting means therefor comprising two floor members one of which is adjustable relative to the other in a direction to permit downward tilting of the adjacent end of the table under the action of gravity, and a guide member carried by the table having` a sliding connection with said adjustable floor member for controlling the tilting movement of the table.

In a device of the character described, a table, supporting means therefor comprising two Hoor members one of which is adjustable relative to the other in a direction to permit downward tilting of the adjacent end of the table under the action of gravity, and a guide member carried by the table having an arcuate guide co-acting with said adjustable ioor member for controlling the tilting movement of the table.

In a device of the character described, a table, supporting means therefor comprising a rocker and an arcuate guide both connected with the table, a ioor runner adjustable relative to the rocker and co-acting with the guide for controlling the tilting of the table, and means cooperating directly with the runner for adjusting it relative to the guide.

In a device of the character described, a table, supporting means therefor comprising a rocker and a guide both connected with the table, said guide being` formed with two spaced members, a floor runner slidably fitted to the space between the guide members and co-acting` with the guide for controlling the tilting` of the table, and means operating,l directly with the runner for adjusting it relative to the guide.

In a device of the character described7 a table7 supporting means therefor comprising a rocker and a guide both connected with the table, said guide being formed with two spaced members each ot which is provided with an arcuate guide slot. a floor runner slidably fitted to the space between said members and provided with rollers engaging` the members within the said slots therein tor of adjustment to thereby hold the table stationary, and means for releasing the locking' means to permit relative movement of said members in a direction permitting of the downwardtilting ot the. table under the action vot gravity.

In a device of the character described, a table, supporting means therefor comprising a rocker and a guide both connected to the table, a loor runner adjustable relative to the rocker and co-acting with the guide for controlling the tilting of the table, said runner being provided with a rack, means comprising a lever and pawl for coperating with said rack to advance the runner in adirection to raise the table, a locking pawl for engaging the rack to hold the latter against reverse movement, and controlling means coperating directly with said pawls to eii'ect an alternate release of the same from the rack whereby to permit and control a reverse movement of the runner.

In a device of the character described, a table, supporting means therefor comprising a rocker and a guide both connected to the table, a ioor runner adjustable relative t0 the rocker and co-acting with the guide for controlling the tilting of the table, said f runner being provided with a rack, means comprising a lever and pawl-for coperating with said rack to advance the runner in a direction to raise the table, a locking pawl for engaging the rack to hold the runner against reverse movement, controlling means coperating directly with said pawls to effect a. release of the same from the rack whereby to permit a reverse movement of the runner, an adjustable member carrying Copies of this patent maybe obtained for `comprising a lever and pawl for coperating with said rack to advance the ruimer in a direction to raise the table, a locking pawl for engaging the rack to holdk the runner against reverse movement, and controlling 'means comprising two spring members for coperating directly with said pawls to effect a release of the same from the rack whereby to permit a reverse movement of the runner.

In a device of the character described, a table, and supponting means therefor comprising two floor-engaging members one of which is adjustable relative to the other in a direction to permit tilting of the table, means for controlling the shifting of the adjustable member relative to the other, a hand operating lever for actuating said controlling means, and an adjustable connection between the lever and controlling means for rigidly holding the lever at different desired angles with respect to the controlling means, for the purpose set forth.
42. In a device of the character described,
a table, and supporting means therefor comprising two floor-engaging members one of which is adjustable relative to the other in a direction to permit tilting of the table, and means for controlling the shifting of the adjustable member relative to the other, said controlling means comprising a rockshaft, an operating lever adjustably connected therewith, and means for rigidly holding the lever on said sha-ft at different desired angles, for .the purpose set forth.
