Description

H. C. STIFF.
SWITCH CONSTRUCTION.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 3. 1919 Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
INVENTOR eTnTn' earn @FFEQE HENRY C. STTFF, Q13 JOHNSTOWH, PENNSYLVANIA.
. SWITCH ooNsTfaUoTIon.
nseaeoe.
To all whom, it may concern I Be it known that I, HENRY C. STIFF, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 'lng Switch Constructions, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of tongue switches and is designed to pro: vide a T-rail tongue switch of simple and durable construction having improved means whereby the swinging switch tongue is fastened in place in the switch structure.
One object'of the invention is the provision of a switch means whereby the switch tongue is secured in place within the pocket of the body or bed of the switch and tilting 0r lifting movement of the tongue in the pocket is avoided and overcome without interference with the sidewise. swinging movements of the switch tongue.
arrangement and combination of parts, all
With this and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction,
substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended ence being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in
i which-- Figure 1 is a plan showing a tongue switch of the T-rail type embodying the novel features of my invention.
Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sections on the lines ITH and III-Ill, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation showing details in the construction of the switch tongue fastening forming part of the switches embodying my invention.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line V-V of Fig. 4 showing details in the construction of the switch tongue.-
Fig. 6 is a plan and Fig. 7 an end elevation of the cover or lid for the box at the side of the switch structure.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 2 designates the body or bed of the switch structure having a shallow depression or recess in its upper horizontal face forming.a pocket 3 in which the sidewise swinging tongue 4 of the switch is operativ ely positioned.
The side surfaces of the body 2 are made Specification of Letters Patent. I

under surface of the head, sloping uppers surface of the bottom flange and the web of the T-rails 5 and 6 forming part of the switch structure. The rails 5 and 6 are,
bent so as to-bulge outwardly at'a point ad tothepoint of the switch tongue to f I provide space for the manganese steel in-', I
- sert and '65 The rear.
end or heel 10 of the switch tongue has an M integral projection or pin 11' on its lower face which projects downwardly into an;
axially vertical hole in the bottom of the.
ocket 3, this hole extending through the inthe lower side of the bed 2 so as to form a bearing for the pin L1, as is best shown in Fig. a.
The bed 2 also is provided with a'hole 13 which extends from the upper surface of the bottom of the pocket 3 to the lower face of the switch body, this hole 13 being somewhat larger than the integrally formed lug or ear 14 on the lower surface of the switch into. The lug it has a transverse opening tongue 4 which extends downwardly there- 15 therein of peculiar constructiointhis hole being cylindrical in outline at the middle of its length in both a vertical and a hori zontal plane and V outline at the side surfaces of the lug-1a in a horizontal plane. .(See Figs. 1, 4-, and h). The switch bed 2 has holes 16, 16 therebeing elliptical or oval in in which register with the flaring (ngening,1: 15in the lug 14E of the switch tongue, and
extending through the openings 15 and l6 is a cylindrical bolt or pin l7 by which the switch tongue is fastened in place within the pocket 3 of the switch body. .It will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 that the pin 17 is located on the tongue at a short distance heel 10 of the tongue 4, so that the tongue, which, in the operation of the switch, swings from side to side of the pocket 3, is securely held in placeiand is prevented from lifting bodily or tilting within the pocket 3. The peculiars shape of the opening 15 in the lug 14: provides the clearance required to permit of the necessary sidewise swinging movement of the switch tongue when the switch is in use without the occurrence of binding between the surfaces of the opening 15 and bolt or pin 17.
Secured on the side of the switch by means vof the bolts 9, 9, is a box 18 having an open upper side, this box having a removable cover 19, and on the lower face of the cover 19 is a projection or lug 20 which extends downwardly within the'box and engages the end, or head of the bolt or pin 17 so as to prevent lengthwise movement thereof in the holes 15, 16. A hole 21 in the side of the box 18 (see Fig. 2) enables the pin 17 to be put into place and to be removed, the cover 19 first being removed to enable the pin to be put into and removed from its operative position "without interference by the lug 20 on the lid or cover 19,
The advantages of my invention, which will be appreciated by those skilled in the 'art, arise from the novel means employed in fastening the swinging switch tongue in operative position within the pocket of the switch body.
Many modifications may vbe made in the details of the switch structure without departing from my invention as defined in I the appended claims.
I claim 1 1. In a tongue switch, the combination with the switch body, of a swinging tongue said tongue having a lug on the under side thereof, and a pin extending through registering openings in said lug and switch body, said pin. being located. intermediate the heel and point of the switch tongue, and the ends of if the opening in said lug being flared to pre 36.
vent lifting movement of the tongue relative to the swltch body without interference w-ithsidewise swinging movements of the tongue i r v 6 1'2. In a tongue switch, the combination .with the switch body of a swinging tongue pivotally mounted on said body, said tongue having a lug on the under side thereof, and a, pin extending'through registering open- .iggs in said and switch body, said pin it-l q a intermediate the, heel and my hand.
point of the switch tongue, and the ends of the opening in said lug being flared to prevent lifting movement of the tongue relative .to the switch body without interfering with sidewise swinging movements of the tongue, and means adapted to engage said pin for preventing displacement thereof relative to the switch body.
v In a tongue switch, the combination with the switch body of a swinging tongue pivotally mounted on said body, said tongue having a lug on the lower face thereof, and a pin extending through registering openings in said lug and switch body, said pin being located intermediate the heel and point of the switch tongue, and the ends of the opening in said lug being flared to prevent lifting movement of the tongue relative pivotally mounted on said body, said tongue having a lug on the lower face thereof, and a pin extending through registering openings in said lug and switch body, said pin being located intermediate the heel and point of the switch tongue, and the ends of the opening in said lug being flared to prevent lifting movement of the tongue relative 'to the bodywithout. interfering with side:
wise swinging movements of the tongue, a
box on the side of the switch into which said pin extends, and a removable cover on said box, said cover having a projection adapted to engage with the end of the pin and prevent dis lacement thereof when the cover is on saidox. 1 i
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set HENRY c. s'rimr.
