OPERATING MECI-IAN ISM FOR CONTROLLERS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 191e.
Application filed March 28, 1917. Serial No. 158,088.
To all whom t may Concern Be it known that I, THOMAS S. PUKERUD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny andy State of Pennsylvania, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Operating Mechanisms for Controllers, ofl'which the following is a specification.
My invention yrelates to Operating mechanisms for controllers suoli as are employed in connection with electric motors, and it has for its object to provide a device of the character indicated which may be operated either manually or by a power device, at the will of the operator.
In the operation of the controllers that are normally actuated by pilot motors or other power devices, it is sometimes necessary or desirable to adjust the controllers by manually operable means. This is especially true with reference to controllers that are employed in connection with the driving motors of printing presses, machine tools and many other machines.
I provide an arrangement consisting of a controller shaft that is adapted to be opere ated normally by a pilot, motor which is operatively connected to the shaft by means of gear mechanism. A lever, which is pivotally connected to the controller shaft, is provided with means for detachably engaging one of the gear wheels. The lever is provided with a handle by means of which` it may be actuated into and out of engagement with the coacting gear wheel. The controller shaft may thus be actuated manually independently of the pilot motor or it may be driven by the latter when the handle is released. The arrangement covered bv the present application is similar to, and is an improvement upon, thatV shown and described in my copending application, Serial No. 98,796.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a controller with my invention applied thereto, parts being b roken away. Fig. 2 is an end yview of a portion of the operating mechanism shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view, partially in elevation and partially in section, of the mechanism shown in Fig. 1.
A base plate 1 of suitable insulating material supports a series of stationary contact members 2. A movable Contact member 3,
' particularly adapted A pilot motor 7, whichmay be, for exam? ple, yan electric motor, is operatively con nected to the shaft 5 by means of a worm 8, awormwheel 9, a pinion 10 that is secured to the worm wheel, and a gear wheel 11 that is rotatably mountedupon the shaft 5.
A lever' 12, which is pivotally connected to the shaft 5, is provided, at one' end, with tooth-like projections 14: for-engaging the teeth of the Agear wheel 11. The lever 12 is provided, at its other end, with a manually operable handle 15. A spring 16 normally maintains the lever 12 in engagement with the gear wheel 11.
An electromagnetic brake 17 engages a wheel 18 on the shaft of the pilot motor 7 when the mechanism is at rest. A casing 19 partially incloses the gear lmechanism for connecting the motor to the controller shaft.
In the normal operation of the mecha nism, the controller arm l is adjusted to any desired position by completing the circuit of the pilot motor 7 for operation in the desired direction. In case, however, it is either necessary or desirable to adjust the controller manually or to change the relation of the controller arm to the pilot motor 7 the handle 15 is actuated downwardly to effect thev disengagement of the lever 12 from the gear wheel 11. The shaft 5 may then be adjusted toV any 'desired position by the manual actuation of the handle 15 and the lever 12. e
Upon the release of the handle 15, the spring 16 actuates the lever 12 into engagement with the gear wheel 11. In case the projections 14 do not mesh with the teeth of the gear wheel 11, this action occurs substantially immediately upon the rotation of the gear wheel 11 by the pilot motor.
IVhile the arrangement described above vis for use in connection with printing presses and similar machines, it is capable, also, of being employed in connection with any other mechanism in which similar operating characteristics are desirable.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a rotatable element and a gear wheel rotatably mounted tion of said motor shaft, a motor thereon7 of a' manuallyv operable lever pivotally connected to said element and detachably engaging said device operatively' wheel,-
2. In a controller,
connected to said gear thercombination with a and means for operatively connecting saidmotor to said shaft7 said means comprising a gear Wheel mounted on said shaft and a lever, of a handle connected to said lever for effecting the disconnecl and said shaft and for actuating said shaft manually.
3. The combination with a rotatable element and a power device, of gear mechanism for operatively connecting said device to said element, one member of said gear mechanism being rotatably mounted on said element, and a manually operable member movably connected to said'element for detachably engaging said gear member.
4. The combination with a movable arm and an actuating motor therefor, of means for operatively connecting said motor .to said arm, said means comprising a gear Wheel rotatable relatively to said arm, and
i a manually -operable lever pivotally connect-l ed to said Wheel.
5. The combination with a movable member, a gear wheel rotatably mounted thereon and a motor operatively connected to said gear Wheel, of a lever pivotally connected to said member and detachably engaging said gear wheel, and a spring for yieldingly maintaining nection of said lever and said gear wheel.
6. The combination with a movable member, a gear wheel rotatably mounted thereon and a motor operatively connected to said gear wheel, of a lever pivotally connected to said member and detachably engaging said gear wheel, a handle on said lever for actuating it out of engagement with arm and engaging said gear Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by Washington, D. gear wheel, anda power the operative consaid gear wheel', and a spring-for yieldingly maintaining the engagement of said lever and'said gear wheel.l 7 7. The combination with a niovable member, a gear wheel rotatably mounted there- Aon and a motor loperatively connected to said'gear wheelyof a lever pivotally connected to said member and having means for engaging the teeth of said gear wheel, a handlefor controlling` the position of said lever and for actuating said movable member independently of said motor, and a spring for yieldingly maintaining the 'engagement of said lever and said gear wheel.
8. The combination with a member rotatable about an axis and agear wheel rota-l table relatively thereto about said axis7 of. power mechanism for rotating said gear wheel and means for causing said member to rotate `with said gear wheel or independently thereof. v 9. The combination with a member rota.- table aboutan axis, power mechanism and means comprising a second member mountedon said axis for operatively connecting said first member to said mechanism, of means for connecting said members to cause them to be rotated together by said mecha-- n ism and means for rotating said 'first member independently of said second member. l0. The combination with` a plurality of stationary contact'members, of a movable. contact member for coperating therewith and rotatable about an axis, an element `ro tatable about said axis relatively to said.v movable contact member, Vmear-is engagingl said element to cause said rotatablemember to rotate with said element or independently thereof and power means for rotating saidy element; n In testimony whereof, I have hereuntov subcribed my name this 22nd day of March, 191 f THOMAS s. PUKERUD.
