The, valve guard differs. however, from the valve body described, in that it is relatively thick and inflexible', ,in order that its tongues or bands may act as stops for the tongues or bandsof the valve body. It is to be noted also that the tongues of the guard or stop are bent. or curved out of the plane 'alve body, but` of the marginal portion of the guard, in order to permit the necessary opening movement of the tongues or bands of the valve body. This construction is illustrated in detail in Fig. 7.
Owing to the described form and arrangement of the valve, a relatively large ei'ective area of the intake is assured.
In order to provide for the passage of the gaseous fluid from the intake valve into the c vjlindeuitself, the main head S is appropriately apertured, and preferably is provided with a multiplicity of simili perforations 162, so Athat in case'of breakage in the, valve the pieces will not become lodged in the end ot' the cylinder and cause damage. The main head S is provided with a recess 164 into which the tongues or bands of the guard or stop project, and it' the free ends of said bands are connected by a connecting band, such as 160 above referred to, the main head will of course be provided with a corrcspondingly shaped recess to receive said band.
Referring now more. particularly to Fig. l. the discharge valve. in the form illustrated in said tigure, consists preferably of a plate of relatively thin, flexible. and preferably elastic sheet material, which in practice, as inthe casef'of the intake valve, is made of tempered spring steel. This plate. is pro vided with slots 166, 16S, 170, 172, 171, 176 178. 180. 182 and 184, thus forming a plurality of tongues 186. 18S, 190, 192, 194, 196. 198. 200. 202 20-1, and 206, said tongues pro- `iectiug from a marginal portion 20S and being joined together at their otherends h v a connecting band 210. In the. construction shown there are several rows of such perfor-ations, herein designated by the reference characters 220. 222, 221, 22e, 22s, 230, 231, 23e, 23s', and 240, one series or row 'for each valve tongue.
-lt will be seen that in the case of the portions separated by intermediate broken ont or removed portions; a valve seat provided with apertures which said unbroken portions overlie and normally close; means to secure said plate in fixed relation to said valvel seat along a single line, the construction and arrangement being such that said plate will buckle or flex as a. whole about said line.
