Description

UNITED STATES PATENT WALTER M'. CONGER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUST-FANS.
y to the upper side of the handle a dat and elastic hook of sheet metal, and fix in the back of the brush a correspondingly long staple. The staple is not appreciably in the way when the brush is in use. Neither is the hook objectionable in the use of the dust-pan. A simple movement Vengages the staple of the brush with` the spring-hook, and leaves the parts very eti'ectually combined, with the brush mainp ly in and over the capacious body of the dustpan. l
The accompanying drawing forms a part of this specification. p v
i Figure l is a section in the line SS in the other ligure. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both the figures.
A is the body of the dust-pan, and A the handle thereof. I solder on the upper surface of the handle A a broad hook, m, of spring-V brass. The brush D may be of the ordinary constructionwith a wood body. A staple, d, is driven strongly therein, adapted to receive the broad hook m, which latter is made suiciently close to spring together a little and retain it.
The brush and pan are used in the ordinary manner. After each use the staple d is engaged with the hook m, and the two may be hung up together by the ordinary ring in the handle. The breadth of the hook m and the corresponding form of the wide staple d tend to guard against any twisting motion of the one part, relatively to the other when they are engaged. The flat form of the hook m enables it to develop a considerable velasticity without being weak, and this allows the hook to cling upon the staple with such tenacity as to avoid theirbein g shaken apart by any ordinary motions.
This invention may be applied to the form of dust-pan described in my patent dated February 6, 1872, in which there is a hood extending up and forward from the edge of the back proper and partially covering the body of the dust-pan. It may be accomplished by fixing the hook lm on the under side of the front edge of such high back or partial overhan ging hood. The brush will, in either case, be held with its main body in the body of the dust-pan, and with a portion of its handle extending beyond the side. I claim as my invention- The hook-fastening m xed on the pan A A', adapted to engage with the corresponding staple d iixed on the brush D and serve together, as herein specified. l I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto-set my hand this '9th day of April, 1872, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
