Description

M. BRYANT. I Improvement in Windlasses.
Patented. July 30, 1872.
gunman Wtmmi xflwwwiof MELANGTON BRYANT, OF NORTHPORT,NEW YORK.
, IMPROVEMENT m WINDLASSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,927, dated July 30, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Winches, Windlasses, &c., invented by MELANGTON BRYANT, of Northport, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York.
My invention consists of the attachment of the pawl-leverfor turning the drum of a windlass or winch to the ratchet-wheel or disk by i a kind of yoke or frame, embracing both sides of the wheel, and confined upon it by sectional annular flanges, fitting in annular grooves in the disk, and sliding around the disks-in said grooves, for raisin g the pawl, but binding 7 therein when the pawl is forced against the drum.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a windlass constructed accordingto myimprovement, the section being taken on the line .00 00 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the drum-shaft, and B the ratchet-dis thereon. Said disk is provided with an annular groove, 0, on each side, near the periphery.
D represents the yoke or frame, embracing said disk on both sides, and having a section of an annular flange, E, projecting into said groove. F is a socketed head on said yoke, above the flanges radially, also above the periphery of the disk, in which the lever G is placed, either to project to one side of the drum, or both, for being worked at one or both ends. H is the pawl, which is pivoted to the yoke-head in the ordinary way, for acting on the periphery of the disks. This yoke or frame consists, mainly, of two curved bars, representin g about three-quarters of a circle, placed on the sides of the disk, and confined upon it by the head F, pins I, and the flanges; but it may be constructed in any approved Way.
The said yoke is practically a prolongation of the lever G, which might be attached to the head in a line radial to the axis of the drum; but I prefer to attach it'iu the manner shown, because'it can, as before stated, pass 7 through a socket in said head and project on each side of the drum,.for the application of power at both ends. y
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The pawl-lever, attached to the ratchet-disk of a winch or Windlass by a yoke or frame, D, having a flange, E, working in an annular groove, 0, in each side of said disk, substantially in the manner described.
