Beit known that I, WILLIAM F. citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer- -tain new and useful Improvements in Molding-Machines, of which the following is Va specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in molding machines and the main object thereof is to provide a machine of this nature that will be simple in construction, efficient in operation and durable in use against wear and tear.
A further object of the device is to provide a machine of the above character which provides for ramming a large number of molds in series or one large mold by means of a plurality of series of rammers.
A further object of the invention yis the provision of means for controlling the machine during the operation of ramming molds, after which ramming operation the machine automatically raises itself, the abovementioned means being released on completion of said ramming operation.
Y, Provision is also made for counteracting any sudden jar to the machine upon raising `itself from the ramming position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consistsof the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as are described in this specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and particularly pointed outin the claims hereunto appended.

Provided directly above the angle-irons 4 is a similar pair of angle-irons 7, which are also held upon the rods l for vertical movement. The last-mentioned irons 7 are connected together at similar ends by another set of angle-irons 8, the latter being similar to and arranged directly above angle-irons 5, said rods 6 being the means whereby angleirons 7 and 8 are connected together, the latter rods 6 by nuts. Angle-irons 8, however, it will be seen from Fig. 8, extend farther outwardly or forwardly, at 9, than irons 5, for the provision of space for bearing boxes 10 thereupon, which boxes 10 receive respective ends of a spindle 11 arranged therein for rotation, upon which spindle 11 are keyed beveled-gears 12, placed to intermesh with beveled gears 13 arranged upon the forward ends of crank shafts 14.
Power is transmitted evenly by the above arrangement to both crank shafts 14 froma pulley 15 over which travels a belt (not shown) the latter receiving power from a suitable motor. Each crank shaft is provided with a plurality of cranks 16, those of one shaft being arranged oppositely to those of the other. Interposed between each pan' of oppositely disposed cranks, and traveling therewith is a ends thereof holding for rotation in bearings therein their respective cranks.
Depending from each fiat-metal-str1p 1s a plurality of arms 18 pivotally held to the former. Arranged upon the top faces of transverse angle irons 5, and secured thereto, are a plurality of pairs of L-shaped rods 19. the L-shaped rods of each palr being held in certain spaced relation to each other also being held against movement onl iiat metal bar or strip 17, the
by cylinders 20, nut and bolt connections 21 passing through the ends of said rods and through the cylinders, one arranged at the ends of each pair of L-shaped rods. Reciprocally held by each pair of L-shaped rods is a plurality of rods 22, the upper end of each of which is pivotally held to the lower end of a resilient arm 18.
From the foregoing it will be seen that for each revolution of each crank 16, its respective arm 18 and reciprocating rod 22, make one downward and upward stroke. Secured to the lower end of each reciprocating rod 22 is a foot 23, the reciprocating rods taken together with their respective feet, hereinafter being termed rammers.
The cranks are so arranged on the quarter revolution that only one set of rainmers (see Fig. 3) comes into contact with the mold at the saine time. 'Of the two central series of rammers, one is making the upward stroke while the other is on the downward stroke. VSufficient clearance is provided between the feet of one series of raminers and those of another series to lpermit saine to freely pass each other.
The machine is operated by means of a hand lever, (not shown) which lever cauqses that part of the machine carrying the raminers to descend when iamming the molds, said machine automatically raising itself when said lever is released.
Coil springs Q4 encircle the vertical rods 1 above angle-irons 8 for the purpose of counte acting or absorbing any sudden' jar which may occur during the tamping operation thereof.
Secured to the top of and at the ends of each angle-iron 8 is a pair of upwardly slanting raisers or braces 25, the lower ends of which are connected to the irons 8 while the upper ends of each pair of braces or raisers are connected together by means of a ring 26, whereto is connected a rope, cable or other means for elevating the mechanism carrying the iainmers.
Although I have specifically described the novel features of construction. combination and arrangement of the several parts of my invention, yet I claim and may exercise the right to make such changes therein as do not depart from the spirit'of the invention and as fall within the scope of the claims. i
IjIaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure bv Letters Patent, is: l
1. In a molding machine, a steel frame comprising vertical rods, an angle-iron mounted slidably on each pair of vertical rods of the frame, transverse angle-irons connecting together similar ends of the first-mentioned angle-irons, rods` extendingthrough registering perforations in both sets of angle-1rons, and extending upwardly therefrom, said last-mentioned rods being the means whereby the angle-irons are held together, angle-irons, arranged directly above the above-mentioned angle-irons their connecting ends being held in such position by the upper endsof said last-mentioned rods, a shaft or spindle rotatably mounted upon adjacent ends of the transverse angle irons of said upper angle irons, beveled gears keyed to said shaft or spindle adjacent its ends, crank shafts arranged at rightangles to said spindle, beveled gears provided at the forward ends of the crank shafts intermeshing with respective beveled gears of the shaft or spindle, power being transmitted to said crank shafts through the medium of said shaft or spindle and said beveled gears, each of said crank shafts being provided with a plurality of cranks those of one crank shaft being directly opposite those of the other, means interposed between each pair of cranks and rotating or traveling therewith, reciprocating means depending from each of the first-mentioned means, feet provided upon the lower end of each reciprocating means. In a molding machine, comprising a steel frame, consisting of pairs of vertical rods, the combination of an angle-iron mounted slidably on each pair of vertical rods comprising the frame, transverse anglen irons connecting together similar ends of the firstmentioned angle-irons, rods, eX- tending through registering perforations in both sets of angle-irons and extending upwardly therefrom, said last-mentioned rods being the means whereby the angle-irons are held together, other angle-irons, arranged directly above the firstunentioned angleirons, a spindle or shaft, rotatably mounted upon the transverse angle-irons of the upper arrangement of angle-irons adjacent its ends, crank shafts arranged at right-angles to said spindle, gears arranged upon said crank shafts for imparting rotation from said spindle to each of the crank shafts, power being transmitted to said crank shafts through the medium above-mentioned for -the purpose hereinafter set forth, a plurality of cranks provided upon each crank shaft. bars or strips extending between and loosely connected at opposite ends with the corresponding cranks of the crank shafts, a pluralityv of arms connected with and de pending fromA each of said bars or strips, a plurality of reciprocating rods pivotally connected at their upper ends to the lower ends of said depending arms and means for transmitting power to the crank shafts.
3. In a molding machine of the character specified, a supporting frame comprising standards, a horizontal frame slidably mounted thereon` a'second horizontal frame slidably mounted above the first-mentioned frame and connected therewith, crank shafts lll arranged at right angles with said shaft depending arms, and means for transmitl0 or spindle and interengaged therewith, bars or strips extending between and loosely connected at opposite ends with the corresponding cranks of the crank shafts, a plurality of arms connected with and depending from each of the bars or strips, a plurality of reciprocating rods pivotally connected at their upper ends to the Vlower ends of said ting power to the crank shafts.
