IBANKLIN N. CONANT, F NEWBURYPORT. MASSACHUSETTS, SSIGNQB, T@ CHASE SHAWHUT COMPANY, 0F NEWBUBYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS, A COBPMT Ella RENEWABLE FUSE.
concern: Be' it lmown vt at I, FRANKLIN N. Co-
I 4NANT a citizen of the `United States, and
a lresldentj'zo'f'Newburyport, Vcounty of Essex, and State-.of Massachusetts, have -in'- vented anIin -iiiffe of which-the ll'owing is a s" eciiication.
My invention relates to inc osed fuses of the cart-ridge type, having knife-blade contact blades and'particularly has, as an object, to provide a structure of such strength that'repeated renewals can be made wlth 'a minimum of deterioration, and so sim le Vand easy to, assemble that any. unskil ed user can renew; the fusible elementeasily,l
accurately gandwithout tools.
My inventionhas other advantages which will be apparent to those skilled in the art, from the mere examination of the drawin in connection with the specification not t e least of which advantages is the act that nal 3 vlocks 'the terminal platea 5' a person skilled inthe manufacture ofsuch articles can make the structure at a remarkably low cost, considering the massive charl acter of all portions bearing 'a strain:
' In the drawings, Figure 1 show'sln side elevation vand partialrsection a fuse made.
in accordance with my invention.
Fi 2 is an end view of the fer-rule showin t e inwardly "extending liange. @i 3 is a plan\view of one of the termiates. 4 is a lan view of the plate which inst rotation. Fig. 5 isa plan view o 4a washer. Fig. 6 is a. lan view of the late formn the slotted) end portion of t e end cap. ig. 7 is a erspectiveview of the end. ca with the s otted end plate removed. v Illig. 8 is a perspective v1ew of @edificaton of the tubular portion, having the inwardly extending flange.
Fig. 9 is a plan view of embodying my invention.
'In this specification, the word v fuse 1s a vfusible element used to include not only the fusible element,
'l represents' the tubular fibercasing and 2 a metal tube or ferrule permanently fastened thereto by screws 3.01' other suitable fastenings, said tube-being exteriorly screw Specification of Letters Patent.
ment in Renewable Fuses,
mg ange 4, which engages and holds the knife-blade Contact plates 5 a ainst movement, both longitudinal an rotational, when the en'd ca is in place, as hereinafter pointed out. his inwardlyv extending iiange (see F1g.2) has a central opening wluc-h 1s WideA enough one way to receive thev full width of the terminal contact blade 5, while at another portion the opening lsjtoo small to receive the entire width of the terminal blade 'against longitudinal movement, as hereinafter described. By preference I make the opening in the inwardlyV extending ilange '4 circular vexcept for diametric notches 7 at one portion. The notched portion 7 should rovideI an o ening to receive the entire width of the b ade 5, wh-ile the opening elsewhere is narrower than lthe main body of the blade 5, but slightly wider than the blade at the notched portion offsaid blade. The terminal blade 5 is provided with notches 8 in its edge, preferably two opnositely placed notche and it will readily be seen that the termina blade ma?I be slipped throu h the notches 7 in the ange 1 of the ferrule 2, and when flan e wil enter the notches 7 and the kni e-blades 5 will be held very firmly against longitudinal movement by the abut@ ments 6.
In order to lock the knife-blade plates in this vposition against rotation, I provide a late 9, having aslot 10, which iits thelmifelade 5 and 1s provided with a prot-uberance or'protuberances 11 which enter the notches 7 of the inwardly extending ange, as shown in Fig. 1, and are held firmly against rotation by the walls thereof. Means for preventing venting) of the metal vapor formed when the fuse lows, of any desired character, may then if desired be placed 4Patented Apr. i, il. Application led March 9, 1918. uarter circle'the walls 6 of the around the knife-blade, for instance, a slotted l leatherwasher 1'2.
