Description
A. CAPRON.
Sewing Machine.
Patented May 29, 1855.
W W I i: l MMW hifiznewwd PETERS. Phololillwgnpbnr. Washinglu UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADDISON OAPRON, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO A.
GAPRON, J. S. DENNIS,
AND H. M. RICHARDS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 12,984, dated May 29, 1855.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADDISON CAPRON, of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in machinery for sewing hooks and eyes or various other articles to latter is supported in and projects from the end of a secondary carrier, D, which is so adapted to the main slide or carrier as to be capable of freely playing either upward or downward thereon.
A rack ofteeth or cogs is formed on the secondary carrier and engages with a gear, E, supported on a stationary shaft, G, which is upheld by arms F F, extended from the main carrier. A coiled spring, H, is arranged within the gear," or in a chamber I, formed therein, one end of the spring being iastened to the gear,
while the other end is affixed to the arbor G. The object of so applying the needle to the main carrier is to prevent breakage of the former, should its point by accident be carried into contact with the upper surface of the article to be sewed to the card. When this happens, the coiled spring, although operating to press the secondary carrier downward I against a shoulder, a, (extended from the main carrier) with a power sufficient to prevent it from being arrested in its downward motion whenever it may be carried into contact with the paper or card, will yield under the pressure on the point of the needle and allow the needle and its secondary carrier to remain stationary while the main carrier continues to descend.
' I claim v Combining the needle with the main carrier by means of a secondary carrier, and a spring I orthe equivalent thereof applied to the main carrier, so as to operate substantially in manner and for the purpose as hereinbefore speci-.
fied.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 18th day of April, A. D. 1855.
ADDISON OAPRON.
