To all whom it may concern I.
Be it known that we, LnsLrs R. Haorrr and BERTHA G. IIIGHT, citizens ofthe ments in Sad-Iron Handles, of which the.
following is a specification.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in sad iron handles, and more particularly to the type which are detachable from the main body of the iron, in order that the handle may be removed from the body of the iron, while the iron is being heated, to facilitate a cool temperature of the detachable handle at all times.
Another object of our invention is to provide a device including means carrying the latch lug, whereby the said lug may be guided to and from its locked position.
A further object of our invention is to provide a device having the various parts thereof so constructed and attached to one another, that they may be readily removed, to. facilitate the repairingof any part thereof.
A still further object of our invention is to provide reinforcing means between the handle portion and the base, in order that the two parts may be securely bound together, and may be detached from one another if so desired.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course f the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of Our invention, the numeral 1 designates the usual body of a sad iron, adapted for use in connection with a detachable handle. The top of this body 1 is provided with the usual curved recess, and the transversebar 2, for the reception and lockingengagement of the lugs carried by the handle.
Our improved grip consists of a handle portion 3 which is mounted between the two side supports 4. It will be notedthat one of the side supports 4 i longer than the other, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. A substantially flat base 5 is adapted to be secured to the lower ends of the side supports 4 and is provided with a bifurcated end 6, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2 for the reception of this lowerend of the side support 4. A pin 7 is passed through the bifurcated ends of the base and the side support 4, to provide a secure connection between the handle and the base.
The opposite end of the base 5 is pro vided with a similar bifurcated end, said bifurcation being reduced in width and extending through the base to the ointsubstantially intermediate the ends 0 a the base.
A block 8 having a longitudinal opening therethrough is adapted to be received in the enlarged portion of the bifurcation and is provided with substantially vertical recesses 9 which are adapted to be arranged adjacent the sides of the bifurcated end. Clamping links 10 are secured to opposite sides of the supporting end 4 and are adapted to have their opposite ends extend into the vertical recesses 9. Screws or any other suitable fastening means 11 are passed transversely throu h the bifurcated ends of the base, the clamping links 10, then into the block 8, for securing said block and sup porting end 1 to the base. The lower end of the other side support 4 is secured on top of the block 8 by means of the link 10, which prevents the turning of the support 4: with relation to the base. I
By the provision of this block 8, a slot 12 is formed from the bifurcation, which extends to a point intermediate the ends of the base. An opening 13 is provided in the innermost wall of the base and is adapted to aline with the slot 12, for the reception of the inner end of a latch rod 14, said latch rod having its opposite reduced end 15 passing through the opening in the block 8, and projecting beyond the same. A knob 16 is secured to this projected end of the latch 7 rod, and is preferably made of wood in order that the operator may grasp the same to releasethe handle from the arm. A1 latch lug 17 is secured to the latch rod 14, asuit-- abut with thelatch'lu g'17, and the oppositeend thereof abut with the inner side of the block 8. This spring normally urges the latch--.luginto engagement with the innermost wall of the slot 12. "A stationary lug v19 is formed upon the under side of the base, adjacent the slot 12 and projects downwardly-and inwardly toward the said slot.
