I CLAMPING DEVICE FOR HEAnINe-MAoHINEs'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application filed February 12, 1918. Serial N 0. 216,810.
To'all whomz't may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES F. STEWART and ERNEST N. DIGKERSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Kinston, in the county of Lenoir and State of North Carolina, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices for Heading-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and use ful improvements in machines for making heads for tobacco hogsheads, and the object in View is to produce a simple and efiicient apparatus of this nature whereby the entire head may be cut in one operation, and comprises a simple and eflicient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
We illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our invention.
Fig. 2 is a view taken at right angles to the view in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter A designates the frame of the apparatus and B designate bearing members which are fastened to the frame in any suitable manner and in which the cylindrical ends D of the frame D are journaled. A circular outlined table N hasa plate N secured to its under surface and is provided with a boss 0 mounted in suitable bearings in the frame and upon which table the material out of which the head is made is placed preparatory to being out. A clamping device consisting of two parallel beams or plates J are fastened together by means of bolts J, and
' L is a shaft which is fastened to said beams or plates, and R is a hollow shaft telescoping the shaft L and which is fastened to a suspending beam Q. The hollow shaft is provided with an elongated slot and S is an angled lever passing through said slot and pivotally mounted upon the pin S and is ad-- justably held in one or another of the perforations in the shaft L. Clamping members T and T are secured to the circumference of said hollow shaft R and to the member T a notched bar W is secured. A pin M is fastened to the lever S and is adapted to engage one or another of the notches in the bar W and one end of the lever S is connected to the clamping member T through the medium of the link S In operation, the material out of which the heads are to be made is placed upon the table which, for convenience, may be tilted at an angle, as shown in dotted lines inthe drawings, and by pushing down the angled lever the clamping beams or plates maybe forced down against the boards to hold the same securely upon the table and after which by turning the table around against the saw the entire head may be cut and by which apparatus uniform heads may be made. By the provision of the machine made in accordance with our invention, it will be noted that the same may be driven by power from above or below, as the table will not interfere with the pulley on the end of the saw mandrel. By the arrangement shown it will be noted that the saw is placed near the center of the frame eliminating danger of the operator being cut by the saw, By the universal jointed connections shown the frame will permit the table to be tilted at the desired angle for the material to be positioned when being sawed. By the provision of the table being mounted on a ball bearing spindle and working on roller-bearings, the same will be caused to be moved smoothly and easily at all times and eliminating any sudden strain ufpon the saW and also avoid any danger o belt flying off the saw incident to choking the same down.
What we claim to be new is:
A machine for cutting the entire head of a hogshead, comprising a rocking frame and support therefor, a table pivotally mounted upon said rocking frame, a depending tubular shell having oppositely disposed slots therein, a shaft telescoping within said shell, Q,
beams secured to the lower end of said and a pin secured to the lever engaging said 10 shaft and spaced apart, a collar fixed to the notches.
shell, an angle lever passing through said In testimony whereof We hereunto a-ffix slots, and a link pivot-ally connecting one our signatures in presence of tWo Witnesses.
' end of the lever With said collar, a link con CHAS. F. STEWART.
necting the upper end of the shaft to the ERNEST N. DICKERSON. portion of the lever Within the shell, a later- "Witnesses: ally extending bar secured to said shell and J. S. SPENCER, haring notches in the under edge thereof, Women.
