WINDOW.
Application led March 30,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, HENXMUTGHNIK and HYMAN RUDoW, citizens of Austria and Russia, respectively, residing at.v altimore, State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Windows, 'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in windows and especially with reference to the provision of hanging stiles arranged for vertical sliding movement in a window casing and in which -a window sash is pivotally mounted so lthat the sash can be turned on its pivots and arranged in an inclined position, for purposesof ventilation, or can be turned down to a horizontal position to facilitate the v washing of the outside ofthe panes; one object of theinvention being to eifectimprovements-in theconstruction of the hanging Stiles; another dbject is to provide improved means for counter-.balancing the weight of the sash :and the hanging stiles and supporting the sash and hanging Stiles in any desired position; another object is to provide improved means for adjustably holdin-g the sash: in inclined position and to permit the sash to be turned down to a horizontal position. y The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
.st1les, the pivots 6 ran In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a window sash and a hanging stile constructed and` arranged in .accordance with our invention and provided with our improved adjusting links and sash balances, and showing the sash in inclined position.
`g. 2 is a' vertical sectional view.-
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
`Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detailed views.
In the embodiment of ou invention we provide a pair of hanging Stiles 1 for each window sash 2, the Stiles being arranged on opposite sid of the window sash and being arranged also-'for vertical sliding movement in the usual grooves of the window casin 8 formed [between the strips 4 spaced therefrom. he sash is pivoted between the lower ends of the hanging being horizontally ard and projecting outwardly from metal inlaid vplates 7 which are secured in rabbets in the sides of the sash.
Thereby the sash is pivotally mounted between the hanging Stiles so lthat the sash can Specificationv of Letters Patent.
in length and width with ner wall 9 of each hanging stile is also prei"-` .era'bly provided with openings 10 as here with a coiled spring being partingstrip 5 and the 1 1918. Serial No. 225,746.
be arranged either in a vvertical position, in a horizontal position or in an inclined position asmay be desired.
Each han ing slfile is hollow and is provided with agchamber 8 which is open on the outer side and which is nearly coeXtensive the stile. The inshown.
To :balance the sash and the hanging stiles we provide each hanging stile with drums, springs Ito turn the ydrums and cords, each of w ich has one end attached to one of the drums and the other end secured to a bar 11 which is arranged in the chamlber of the hanging stile and is secured as by means of a screw 12 or the like to one side of the window casing. The drum 13 is arranged near the upper end of the stile, in lthe chamber thereof, and is mounted for rotation on a suitable supporting axle 14 and i-s associated spring 15 one end of which is yattached to the drum, the other end of the attached to the axle. The other drum 16 is arranged near the Ilower end of the hanging stile. in the` chamber thereof, is mounted to turn on the axle 17 and is associated with a spring 18 which is wound reversely to the spring 15 so that the Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
springs serve to turn their respective drums e 1n reverse directions. The cords 19. 2O are in practice, flat tapes and are respectively connected to the drums 13, 16 and wound re-v versely thereon. f' Hence the springs cause the drums to counteract each other and as the Stiles are raised or lowered together with the sash the drum in one end of each hanging stile winds up i-ts cord `while the drum in the opposite end of the hanging stile unwinds its cord and stiles are maintained at any desired elevation, as will be nderstood. The drums 13 and 16 and their springs and tapes serve in eect as checks 'for cushioning retarders. Thus when the Stiles land the sash therein are moved downwardly the `drum 16 and its appurtenanceswill perform the cushioning function, whi'le Iwhen the Stiles and sash are moved upwardly the checking or cushioning function will be performed by the drum 13 and its appurtenances. vFrom this it'follows that the drum 13 and appurtenances cushion the stiles and sash when the same are violently moved upwardly, and the drum 16 and appurtenances will perform the same the sash and hanging function when the Stiles and eeen ere fviolen'tly inoied downweidly.
