GEORGE WILLIAM KRAHMER, OF CYLINDER, IOWA.
CHUTE FOR LIVE STOCK.
Application filed January To all whom it may concern:
Be it knowuthat I, GEORGE W. KRAHMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cylinder, in the county of Palo Alto and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chutes for Live Stock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a chute for livestock and more particularly to a chute or a run-way which is adapted to be placed in a position where hogs or other live-stock may be unloaded or loaded upon stock-cars or vehicles.
An object of the device is the provision of a chute, the run-way of which may be varied with respect to its angular position whereby the stock may be made to climb to various heights when the bodies of the vehicles vary in height.
A further object of the device isthe provision of means whereby the chute may be demounted and taken apart for folding it in a minimum space when not in use and which may be assembled and held together by a plurality of fastening devices with which the device is provided.
A further object of this inve tion is the provision of a chute which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on plan view.
Fi 3 is a fragmentary section on the Fig. l is a fragmentary line- H of Fig. 1,.
Each of the side walls A and B consist of a plurality of upright standards 1, 2 and 3, each varying in height, the stan lard 3he1ng of a greater height than the standard 1 while the intermediate standard 2 is of a height greater than standard 1 and less than the standard 3. Secured to the inner sides of each of the standards is a plurality of superposed slats or guard members a which are disposed at an angle and extend upwardly from the standard 1 to the end standard 3.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
4, 1918. Serial No. 210,316.
The upper ends of each of the upright standards are connected together by the connecting bars 5 and secured to each end of each of the connecting bars is a U-shaped yoke 6 which is secured to the connecting bars 5 by the fastening elements 6. The ends of the yokes are spaced apart from the ends of the connecting bars 5 for providing a space for the reception of the upper ends of the upright standards 1, 2 and 3. A staple 7 is secured to each standard adjacent its upper end and carries the end of a chain 8 the free end of which carries a locking pin 9 adapted to be inserted through an opening in the end of the yoke and into a recess provided in the upper ends of each of the standards as shown in detail in Fig. & of the drawing.
The lower ends of the end standard 1 are connected together by a connecting bar which is identical in construction with the connecting bar 5. Each of the other pairs of uprights 2- and 3 are connected together by connecting bars 5 which are mounted a bove the lower end of the uprights and adapted to be adjustably mounted thereon by providing the uprights 2 and 3 with a plurality of apertures 10 which receive the ends of the locking pins 9 carried by the chains 8 the ends of each are secured to the ends of the staple 7. One end of arun-way 11, consisting of a plurality of longitudinally extending planks, rests upon the connecting bar which is secured to the lower ends of the uprights 1 while its opposite end rests upon the connecting bar 5 of the standards 3. The central connecting bar 5 is disposed beneath the center of the runway 11. A plurality of transversely extending cleats 12 form a means for fastening the planks of the run-way together and provide suitable anti-slipping elements for preventing the animals from slipping while they are passing up the run-way. The bottom of the run-way is provided at each end with a brace bar 13'which rests against the lower connecting bars for preventing the run-way from slipping off the connecting bars while the device is in use.
By virtue of the adjustable connection provided by yokes and the plurality of apertures in the uprights 2 and 3, the end of the run-way may be raised or lowered for loading or unloading the live-stock upon or from vehicles of various heights. The sides of the device and the run-way together with the connecting arms may be disconnected and ficing any of the taken apart for folding the device in compact space When not in use.
In reduction to practice I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efiicient and practicable ing that the conditions concurrent With the adoption of my device Will necessarily'valy, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in the proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, Without sacriadvantages of my inven tion, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described c0mprising a plurality of standards,sa-id standards including a pair of end standards and a pair of opposite end standards, said first mentioned standards being of a greater length than said second mentioned standards, a pair'of intermediate standards con necting bars disposed at the top of each pair of said standards and connecting their ends together, lower connecting bars connectlng the lower portions of the standards together,
a yoke carried by each end of said connecting bars and provided With an end aperture, a locking pin flexibly connected to each of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressi V yet realizdetails of construction,-
said standards and adapted tobe extended through said a formed in the Way mounted aperture and into a recess end of each standard, a runon the lower connecting bars and adapted to be adjusted vertically with theloWer conn 2. A device 0 pairs, each of ent length than the ards, guard members secured to said standards and disposed at an angle to said. standards, connecting portions of said rality of apertures pair of said standards,
end of each of said yokes pro bars connectin the lower pairs of standards, a pluformed 1n the longest said connecting bars, each of vided W1th an aperture in its end, a locking-pin extending through said aperture in each I be received by rality of trans V In testimony of said yokes and adapted to one of the versely extending cleats.
