"i Be itknown that I, RALPH FRANK KNIGHT, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for'Setting Eyelets, bf which the following description, 1n connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for setting eyelets or similar fasteners' and is illustrated as embodied in a machine for setting blind or invisible eyelets of the-type described in an application of H. W. Kenway, tember 1, 1914.
Eyeleting machines of the type referred to are provided with an expansible upsetting die comprising' movable sections which are normally held in contracted condition. The upsetting die, in contracted condition, is passed through one or more superposed layers of material into which a blind or invisible eyelet is to be inserted. After the contracted' die has passed through the work, 'it is expanded and the upsetting of the eyelet is' effected by forcing the eyelet barrel eyelet' wrongly positioned. in the delivery' end ofthe raceway or when the barrel of the eyelet presented to the upsetting die is either distorted or clogged up. Such conditions-'may cause breakage of the expansible die orinterfere otherwise with the proper setting of the eyelets and it is the general object of the invention to obviate such difficulty.
' With these conditions in view, an important feature of the present invention consists in a guard :for protecting the ends of the sectionsof an expansible die during its movementirelative to the raceway. The punching operation is effected by the downward movement. of the punch 54 by swinging the lever 12 by a cam not herein shown. The punching operation takes place at one side of the setting position whereupon the punch isi re;- tracted from the work and moved to am inoperative position. The feed lever 14: is subsequently moved so as to carry the feeding pin 52 into alinement with the previously punched hole, then depressed to= engage the work and finally moved towardthe v left while still in engagement with the work to bring the punched hole into alinenrent with the setting devices. During 'the insertion of an eyelet the feeding pin 52 is engaged by the rising and forced upwardly against. the tension of a spring 55 arranged within a casing of the feeding lever 14 permitting the expansible die to rise in close-d condition to vproper position in the layers of the Work as determined b-y the stop 68 which limits' the upward movement of the angle piece 26. A slight downward motion 'of the lever 14 then causes the feeding pin 52 to force the die expanding member into the expansiible, die thereby expanding itA ready to split and spread the eyelet when the latter is forced upward by the continued upward movement of the plunger 4.
After the contact of the angle piece with the stop 68 the spring 32 is compressed permitting the plunger 4 to continue its upward movement, and as soon as the feeding lever is returned to its initial position, the upsetting die is permitted to contract so that it may be drawn downwardly through the barrel of the clenched eyelet. The movements of the yfeeding lever 14 are derived from a. cam 64 upon the main shaft of the machine. The cam 64 acts upon a roll? 65 of a vertical shaft 66 connected with the' rear end of the feeding lever 14.

Beneath the shoulder 72 the die expanding member is provided with a cylindrical portion 74 of substantially the same length as the barrel of the eyelet 'to be upset. The cylindrical portion 74 supports rigidly the sections of the die, thus preventing lateral-distortion ofthe die Vsections during its expansion. The cylindrical portion74 tapers at 76 into the stem 34 to insure a gradual expansion of the die whenthe die expanding .22. Should the barrelof the eyelet be dismember is forced into the die. It lwill be noted that the stem 34 is reduced inv diameter at its upper end below the tapered portion to permit the complete contraction of the die sections.

After the spring 55 is fully compressed the feeding lever is again lowered and the cupped end of the feeding pin 52 forces the die expanding member `into the upsetting die thereby separatin its sections. When the upsetting die is ful y expanded the upsetting flange of the die sections is inengagement with the annular shoulder 72. 'Ihe cylindrical portion 74 gives lateral support to the expanded die sections. During the upsetting operation the upsetting die remains stationary and the barrel. of the eyelet is upset by the .movement of the eyelet carrying set 16 relatively to the die. Ihe position occupied by the parts at the conclusion of the upsetting operation is illustrated in Fig. 8.y The parts are then returned to the position of Fig. 3 ready to repeat the cycle.

In an eyeleting machine an expansible upsetting die comprising a plurality of` resilient sections constructed and arranged to y be maintainednormally in contracted condition, a member having a die expanding portion 'carried by the upsetting die, and means to hold the die expanding portion of the said member out of the interlor of the upsetting die.

In an eyeleting machine an expansible upsetting die comprising a plurality of resilient sections constructed and arranged to be maintained normally in contracted condition, a die expanding member carried by the upsetting die and extending through. the body of the die, and yielding means to hold the die expanding member in a predetermined inoperative position.
5. lIn an eyeleting machine an expansible u setting die, comprising a plurality/ofres1 ient sections constructed and arranged to be maintained normally in contracted condition, a die expanding member carried by the die and movablewithin the latter, and ymeans to force the die expanding portion of said member into the contracted portion of said die.
6. In an eyeleting machine an expansible upsetting die comprising a plurality of movable sectlons constructed and arranged to be maintained normally in contracted condition, avdie expanding member carried by the die, means to force the die expanding member into the contracted die, and means to move the die ex anding member out of the ex anded upsettlng die.
In an eyeleting machine an expansible upsetting die, a die expanding member carried by the die, yielding means to hold the expanding member in inoperative position, and means for moving the expanding member positively to expand the die.
8. In an eyeleting machine, an expansibley die having an upsetting flange and a die expanding member carried by the die comprising a stem extending throughoutthe die, and a head extending normally beyond the upsetting ange of the die.
9. In an eyeleting machine an expansible upsetting die comprising a` plurality of resilient sections constructed and arranged to be maintained normally in contracted condition, Aand a die expanding memberconstituting a guard for the expansible die during the passage vof the latter through the barrel of the eyelet.
10. In an eyeleting machine, an expansible upsetting die, comprising a plurality of resilient sections forming an upsetting iiange maintained normally incontracted' conditiomand die expanding means carried by the die arranged to pass through the barrel of the eyelet to be set in advance of the upsetting flange of the die to prevent encounter of the upsetting end of the die with the eyelet prior to the expansion of the die.
11. In an eyeleting machine, an expansible upsetting die comprising a plurality of movable sections, a raceway presenting an eyelet to the upsetting die, and a die expanding member carried by the die and held normally above the upsetting iange of the die.
12. In an eyeleting machine, an expansible upsetting die, a die expanding member comprising a stem extending through the die and a head projecting normally beyond the upsetting flange of the die, means to force said member into the die, and means to return the expanding member to inoperative position at the conclusion of the upsetting operation.
13. In an eyeleting machine, an expansible upsetting die, anda die expanding member comprising a stem extending through the upsetting die and an expanding portion adjacent to the upsetting iiange of the die constructed and arranged to pass through the barrel df an eyelet to be set in advance of the n l guard for protecting the ends of the sec-v tions during the movement of the die.

In an eyeleting machine an expansible upsetting die comprising a plurality of resilient sections .constructed and arranged to be maintained normally in contracted condition, and a die expanding member carried by the die having a head arranged to enter the eyelet to be set in advance-of the die, the diameter of said head being greater than the diameter of the contracted die to clear a I passage for eyelet. t

In an eyeleting machine an expansible upsetting die comprising a plurality of resilient sections constructed arranged to be maintained normally in contracted condition and a die expanding member carried by the dieJ said expanding member consisting of a stem extending through the upsetting die, and a head stem.

In an eyeleting machine anexpansible upsetting die comprising a plurality of resilient sections, and adie expanding member carried by the die constructed to support `laterally 'for a distance corresponding substantially to the length of the unclenched barrel of the eyelet the sections of the expanded die.

In an eyeleting machine, an expansible upsetting die comprising a plurality of resilient sections, and a die expanding member carried by the die consisting of a stem and a head, the loWer portion of said head 'v being tapered to facilitate entrance of the head into the die to expand the die, and a cylindrical portion above the conical end of the head supporting laterally the sections of the expansible die during the upsetting operation.

In an eyeleting machine an expansible upsetting die, comprising a plurality of movable sections, and a die expanding mem- 4 ber carried by the die, said die expanding l member comprising a head having an annular shoulder engaging the upsetting flange of the die and rigidly supporting the latter durin the upsetting operation.

the die throigh the barrel of the tapering toward said exp andin said die expanding member being constructed and arranged to engage the upsetting flange of the die and rigidly support the flange during the upsetting operation.

24. In an eyeleting machine, an expansible upsetting die, and a die expanding member carriedby the die, comprising a head normally above the upsetting ange of the die and a stem extending through the die, and means to limit the movement of the die expanding member toward inoperative position.

In an eyeleting machine an expansible upsetting die and a die expanding member carried by the upsettingdie, the said member comprising a head and a stem, t e lower end of which is spring tempered, and a lateral projection on the lower end of the said stem to limit movement of the die expanding member with relation to the die.
26. In an eyeleting machine an upsetting die comprising expansible sections, and'a die expanding member passing through said die and provided with` a resilient portion adapted to engage the die and prevent uninf tentional withdrawal of the member from the die.
27. In an eyeleting machine an upsetting die comprising expansible sections and a guard carried by the die for protecting the ends of the die sections during the movement of the die.
28. In an eyeleting machine an upsetting die comprising expansible sections and a combined guard and die expanding member constructed and arranged to support the expanded sections of the die.

In an eyeleting machine an expansible upsetting die comprising a plurality of sections maintained normally in contracted condition, a die expanding member carried by the die, operating means for the expanding member arranged to force said member into the die, means for urging the operating means yieldingly toward the expanding member and yielding means of greater resistance than the last mentioned means to hold the expanding member out of the die for the purpose of preventing premature expansion of the die.
30. In an eyeleting machine an expansible upsetting die, a die expanding member, f;
a spring holding the expandingmember normally out of the die, and operating means for the expanding member urged toward the expanding member by a spring of less tension than` the spring which tends to move the expanding member out of the die.

In an eyeleting machine, an expansi- `ble upsetting die comprising a plurality of resilient sections constructed and arranged to be maintained normally in contracted condition, a die expanding member carried by the upsetting die and extending through the body of the die, yielding means to move said member to die expanding position, and other yielding means to move the die expanding member to a position allowing the contraction of the die.

In an eyeleting machine, an expansible upsetting die comprising a plurality of sections maintained normally in contracted condition, a die expanding member carried by the die, yielding means constructed and arranged to move the die expanding member to expanding position, and other yieldingv means of different strength from that of the last mentioned means constructed and arranged to move the die expandin member to an inoperative position to al ow the contraction of the die.
