- One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated. of simple construction v'and :operation which may be produced at relatively small cost and maybe readily 'applied to aV saw bladeof standard construction. A further object is to provide a device by means of which the saw yblade is gripped tightly so as to secure the gage in proper position thereon, the gage being provided with resilient gripping means so as to permit slight give of the saw blade when bent or flexed so as to prevent breakage thereof. A further object is to provide a gage having means for holding the blade of the saw in the gage in suoli a manner as to permit the gage to be readily adjusted on the blade before permanently securing the gage in position. The gage is provided with an inner U- clamp 1 and an outer U-clamp 2, as considered relative to the handle 3 of the saw 4 when the gage is in operative position. These clamps are formed by bending from resilient material of suitable gage, such as strap steel. Clamp 1y is provided withthe integral downwardly directed arms la and 1h which are disposed in parallel spaced relation. Clamp 2 is provided with the integral parallel spaced arms 2a and 2b. As will be noted, clamp 1 is of greater height than clamp 2 so as to accommodate the inner or broader portion of the saw blade 4a. A leaf spring 5 is fixedlyl secured at its upper end to vthe arm 1a of clamp 1, adjacent the upper end thereof, by rivets 6. This spring is bent so as to extend transversely of the clamp, as

YAs will be noted, the strip 7 extends below the arms lb and 2b of the clamps l and 2,
respectively. This strip is of such length as to extend substantially the full length of x saw blade 1in. In using' this gage, the saw blade is first inserted into the clamps between the arms 1b and 2b and the strip 7. As the strip extends below the clamps, this is readily accomplished by forcing the strip inward away from the' arms of the clamps and pushing the blade into the clamp. The springs 5 and 11 act to force the strip `toward the arms 1b and 2b of the clamp so as to frictionally secure the saw blade between these arms and thestrip. This Ypermits the gage to be readily adjusted on the blade, l while avoiding all looseness or play of. the
blade such as would interfere with proper adjustment of the gage. Afterthe gage has been adjusted for the desired depth vof cut, the clamping screws l0 and 14 are turned in so Vas. to force theV strip 7 into tight engagement with the blade, thus gripping the blade securely between the arms 1* and 2b of the clamps 1 and 2, respectively, and the strip 7. It will be understood, of course that the lower edge of strip 7 is adjusted parallel with the cutting edge 4b of the saw blade and a distance away from the points of the teeth thereof corresponding to the depth of the cut desired. Vhen thus adjusted, strip 7 serves as a gage which positively limits thev limiting the effective width of the blade, this means being readily adjustable so as to pro-VV vide for' cuts of different depths. As stated, the clamps l and 2 are formed from resilient material so that, while thesaw` blade is gripped securely it is not held absolutely rigid, a certain amount of flexing or bending being permitted, Vthus preventing breakage of thel blade such as would be very apt to occur if an obstacle were encountered during the sawing operation, or' the blade were to bind in the wood being sawed, and the blade were held absolutely rigid. Itwill be evident that there may be slight changes made inthe construction andarrangement of the different-parts of my inventionwithout de- Y parting from the field and scope of the same, and I intend to include all such variations, as fall within thescope of the appended claim, in 'this application in which a preferred 'form only of my invention is disclosed.v f
