No. 129,765. Patentedjuly 23,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARABELLA Sll'S, OF EDGEWATER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN EYEGLASSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,765, dated July 23, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Eyeglasses, invented by Miss ARABELLA Siis, of Edgewater, in the county of Richmond and State of New York.
. The drawing represents a sectional view of my improved eyeglass.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. p This invention has for its object to improve eyeglasses in such manner that the spring connecting the frames cannot become bent to one side or twisted out of shape. Every ordinary eyeglass now in use is provided with a pin'at one side of the handle, over which a hook at the other end is placed whenever the glasses are to be folded together. The pin beingon one side, it is evident that the spring which connects the glass-frames will constant ly be bent in one direction by the folding of the glasses. The consequent constant strain will, after a longer or shorter interval, accordin g to the quality of the spring, twist or bend it laterally, causing one glass, when used, to
be further from the eye than the other. This interferes with, and finally becomes exceedinglyinjurious to eye-sight.
My invention consists in adapting the pin' to project from either side of the handle or frame A, so that the hook I) on the other frame B may be secured to either side of A ad lt'bz'tum. .This will give sufficient change in the positions of the spring G, when folded, as to prevent its being twisted in one direction only. The pin is made of the usual length, and is fitted loosely through the handle, so that it can be pushed from one side to the other. It is also headed at both ends, to adapt it to retain its place on the. hook or frame. It
is thus made to project from that side on which the glass B may be folded.
Having thus described my invention, what l I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The eyeglass provided with the pin a, made adjustable to adapt it to engage with the hook b on either side of the frame of the glass, as specified.
