Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PERRY P. AU BUoHoiv, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a fastener forgerments, gloves, or other articles, and has for its object to provide a snap fastener of simple construction which can be readily attached to and removed from a garment without injury to the fabric composing the same;

My invention which is in the nature of an improvement on that for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me July 24, 1917, Number 1,234,256, for an improvement in garment fasteners, consists in features of novelty as hereinafter described and claimed reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, whereon,

Like letters and numerals of reference denote like parts in all the figures.

My improved garment fastener comprises a button or male part a and an eyelet or female part b which are respectively preferably, integral. The button a consists of a preferably, rectangular-shaped base 1 from which projects centrally a preferably, circular shank 2 having a preferably, spherical-shaped (or rounded) head 3 which is diametrically somewhat larger than the shank 2 so as to form a shoulder at its junction therewith. Through the base 1 are suit ably arranged perforations 4 by which the button a is sewn to the fabric of the garment or other article to which the fastener is ap plied, all the said parts being similar in construction to the corresponding parts of the fastener described in the said Letters Patent.

The eyelet or female part Z) consists in the present case of a preferably, rectangularshaped strip of thin metal or other springy material having flat end portions 5 alined to each other in the same plane and through each of which is a preferably, oval-shaped perforation 6 by which the eyelet b is sewn to the fabric of the garment as in the case of the button a.-

The middle portion 5 of the strip is raised or projected somewhat outward from the plane of the end portions 5 so as to form a space or concavity 7 between its underside and the underside of the end portions 5 for strengthening the eyelet b and at the same time forming a pocket therein for receiving the head 3 of the button a as hereinafter more particularly referred to.

Through the middle raised portion 5 of the strip is a central perforation or hole 8 which is preferably oval-shaped having its major axis alined to the longitudinal center of the eyelet b and its minor axis somewhat less than the diameter of the head 3 of the button a, the strip being split or divided longitudinally along the said center from each end of the hole 8 to the corresponding end of the raised middle portion 5 from which the opposite edges of the divided portions of the strip diverge to their junction with the corresponding fiat end portion 5, or base of the eyelet b, thereby forming two opposite triangulanshaped openings 9 through the metal connecting the ends of the middle raised portion 5 of the strip with the flat end portions 5 as seen particularly in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, the advantage of this construction being that the rigidity of the metal is reduced and less resistance offered to the ready engggement of the button a with the eyelet The button a and eyelet b being sewn to the respective portions of the garment to be fastened, the head 3 of the button 0 is pressed through the central hole 8 of the eyelet 7), and in so doing the split portions of the strip are forced apart until the head 3 has passed through the hole 8 into the space or pocket 7 between the raised middle portion 5' and the fabric, when the split portions of the strip by their resiliency close upon the shank 2 and against the shoulder formed by the head 3 therewith, as shown in Fig. 7 whereby the button a and eyelet 7) are locked together and the garment fastened. On withdrawing the head 3 for unfastcning the button (a from the eyelet b, the split portions of the strip are returned to their normal position by their resiliency as seen in Figs. 3 and 4.

If desired the eyelet 6 maybe formed at its base with suitably shaped lateral flanges 10 which are.preferably extensions of and in the same plane With the flat end portions 5, the flanges 10 having one (or more) perforations 10 therethrough as shown in Fig. 8, whereby the eyelet b may be further secured to the garment.

I claim 1. In a garment fastener of the character described, an eyelet consisting of a strip of springy material having fiat end portions alined to each other in the same plane and a middle portion projecting from and parallel to the end portions, and having a central opening therethrough, the said middle portion being split along its longitudinal center between its ends and the said opening, and havin its divided portions divergent from the said ends to their junction With the said flat end portions.

2. In a garment fastener of the character described, an eyelet consisting of a strip of springy material having fiat end portions alined to each other in the same plane and a middle portion projecting from and parallel to the end portions, and having a central oval-shaped opening therethrough, the said middle portion being split along its longitudinal center between its ends and the said opening, and having its divided portions divergent from the said ends to their junction r with the said flat end. portions, and the said opening having its major axis alined to the said center.
